Why not add a search function for the comics? It's always a pain to go and track down a Penny Arcade strip to prove a point and they haven't been putting out comics for 7+ years. Say if I wanted to show the comic where Torg explains politics to Kiki via ball metaphors; wouldn't typing "Torg Kiki Politics Balls" into a search option and being presented with the comic and the closest matches be easier and faster than guessing at the date and the book in which the comic occurred? I picture a user submitted Tag system, a cross between Youtube and Wikipedia if you will.

Umm, Red? You had better shrink your avatar down a bunch before the powers that be hit you with a modslap.
Swat Cats rocked... but not enough to be worth your life.

If I remeber right it was a dialog search. It found when ever the word you searched for was used in a comic, if I remeber it was a great way to kill time.

One way to make a good search thingy is to have an invisible element on each strip page that contains all of the unique words of the strip and have a script that looks for the words. Of course, someone will need to write down all the words and dialog for it to work. This... will take awhile.

I remember when there was that search.
I have no idea why it was taken down, other than to comment that search functions in general are notorious server-resource consumers, so perhaps for a heavily-trafficked site with a huge archive like sluggy.com, taking it off meant a considerable relief on the server load (and I guess the bills later).
That's pure spec though, I actually have no idea

A dialog search would be helpful, but only if you knew what was said in the strip. And as was previously posted, it would take quite a bit of time to work out. I say that we, the fans, should be able to submit "Tags" that describe the contents of each comic. (Think Youtube with some Wikipedia mixed in)
As for my avatar, I have been made aware of the size violation and am working amending it. Anyone know how/where I can resize it?

Either crop or resize it through just about any drawingprogram in existence.
I just used Microsoft Paint, the program that comes with every PC ever made.

There we go. Thanks for the suggestion. But to stay on target, if the code was set up, couldn't we handle the content for a search function.

I think that http://www.ohnorobot.com/ could help with that.
OhNoRobot wrote: how it works:
Step 1: You, as a comic owner, add a few lines of copy-and-paste Javascript code to your comics display pages. This will make a customizable 'click here to transcribe this comic' image appear on the pages of comics that require transcriptions. Step 2: You and your readers transcribe comics at your leisure. The task of transcription is made easy by allowing everyone to do just a little bit, instead of one person doing it all. Step 3: Every time there is a new transcription submitted, you can check it for content, spelling and grammar, and make alterations if you want. Nothing goes online that you don't approve. As each new transcription is approved, your search engine becomes more and more complete.
It's as easy as that! Your personalized comic search engine is available as soon as you sign up, and you can quickly customize its graphics and colours - making integrating the engine with your own site's design easy. What's more, your comic transcriptions are instantly available in general ohnorobot.com searches: so if someone is searching for comics about zombies, and you've got a comic where a guy totally gets bitten by a zombie and then FLIPS OUT, they'll be able to find your stuff. It's a great way for new readers to discover your work.
It even lets you tag sound effects! Moo!

That's pretty much what I had in mind. Now how do we get a certain cartoonist to see this?
