Not that way, no; our courts would reject outright that kind of paper dump, and the defense attorneys would have to digest it into something the courts can handle without being delayed. The prosecutors would have to assign some staffer to wade through it, but functionally would ignore it and go with what they already have. No, there's other ways to play that game locally.

So how's that January 6th commission going? Looks like it isn't.

It will, it'll just be a select committee in the House. The Fox crowd won't listen; but they wouldn't have listened anyway, so who cares?

Eh, Zuma's been delaying his trial for a good... something like seventeen years now. In all of that history, there's probably something that Trump can use. Or maybe he'll just copy the general approach of "delay everything".

Even if some of the specific tricks won't work.

Worrying signs from Merrick Garland's Justice Department that the Democrats are going to sweep Trump's misdeeds under the rug. It is as I predicted. Biden ran as the Normality President, and he's going to deliver it by pretending the last four years was an aberrant fever dream. Then the Dems are going to act shocked (shocked!) when the Republicans go on dismantling democracy from the inside.

I'm not sure what game Garland is playing; but I suspect it's some variant of balancing institutional imperatives with trying to uphold the law (especially knowing that the Supreme Court remains packed by Trump, so Is have to be crossed and Ts dotted very carefully). But so far it doesn't look like they're actually giving every felon in the national GOP a free pass the way Obama did.

At least, I hope they aren't. That worked out real well when Obama did it.

Trump's company just got hit with 15 felony charges, and the CFO also got hit with one for tax evasion. Now all of this was New York State charges, but the criminal complaint specified that when said CFO criminally failed to pay $100,000 in state taxes, he also criminally failed to pay $500,000 in Federal taxes.

Assuming that the prosecutors did their jobs, and the paperwork backs up that statement, it's all but impossible for the IRS not to file Federal criminal charges as well. And as someone noted, all that potential liability to the government may well make the company's creditors rather nervous; which could very well cause them to call their loans now in order to cut their losses. What they'd get now would be more pennies on the dollar than they'd get after the various tax agencies got through levying back taxes, interest and penalties, after all; and it's highly unlikely that Trump would beat the rap against this kind of legal firepower, on these kinds of charges, brought by people working for his avowed enemies (who would thus not be for sale).

Trump is not running for president, but wants people to think he is. Film at 11.

He's just trying to bilk more money out of his supporters again. Regardless, we'll see a whole clown car of omnibigoted conspiracist show-theocrats at the next Republican primary.

Also, call me when he gets personally indicted with something. Going after his accountant for bog standard white collar shadiness isn't gonna cut it.

Looks like all of his fellow travellers who were sued by the voting machine company (Dominion) have now had the suits green lighted by the courts. Fox could probably survive a billion dollar judgement; the rest are looking at bankruptcy. Meanwhile, Guiliani is doing answering machine messages to pay the bills. This could be fun.

In more immediately Trump centric news, he's just refused again to do a pro-vaccine spot. Apparently killing off his followers is an acceptable price to pay for...well, anything, really. He's always been open about the utter contempt he holds for those losers.

Is it just me, or is the FBI taking its sweet time arresting the really violent January 6th insurrectionists? Mostly I'm hearing about a bunch of low-level mouth-breathers getting picked up by the cops. And that's not even mentioning the political leadership who pretty obviously told the Capitol Police and the National Guard to twiddle their thumbs.

I expect that you'll have to wait a while longer.

Zuma stopped being President on 14 Feb 2018. At that point, he'd been dodging corruption charges for years and some people were hopeful that he'd finally get arrested for them.

He was arrested on 7 July 2021 for contempt of court (for, basically, refusing to turn up and answer corruption-charge-related questions).

So... a powerfully politically positioned person took three and a half years to get arrested after losing the presidency (and that was not even on the full charges). It might well take three and a half years to deal with the minds behind your insurrection, too.

As a lovely little gesture of respect, Chinese social media are noting that the transfer of power in Kabul was more peaceful than the one in Washington. Pity we couldn't have given Trump the choice of fleeing with a helicopter and four cars full of cash on one hand, or a firing squad on the other; we'd be way ahead on points (and it would have been a lot cheaper).

"Peaceful", if you don't count the people that the Taliban have dragged out of their houses and shot. Which of course they don't. Never let reality get in the way of a good troll.

(There was also the trolling attempt in which Chinese state-backed media tried to compare themselves favourably to the Taliban. As in "we're going to march into Taipei victorious very soon and the cowardly Americans and their Taiwanese lapdogs will just run away, har dee har har").

I think one could argue that "everyone hiding under their beds for fear of the Secret Police" is a whole lot more peaceful than "everyone getting raucously drunk and celebrating all night long at the tops of their voices".

It's certainly quieter, at least. But that doesn't mean it's preferable.
