I just want to say that the last panel sounds awkward. The sentence is too long and has too many aspects. Would recommend breaking it up for clarity.

Yup. Darn you autocorrect! This is a thread of Pete's finger-to-keyboard errors, not mine!

I think the entry in the niftysearch engine for the comic of 11/19/2012 need serious editing, as the comic page in question no longer has adds for book 12 and 13:

Thank you for catching that!

But OMG, I HATE the "new" editor used in NiftySearch. I wish Pete would take it over (hint, hint!!) so that I can have a decent editor again: I tried several times to delete the transcripts for those 'ads', and it kept saying "You didn't type anything" and not changing it, no matter what I did. I finally realized that I had to remove the special character in Lau's name in order to get it to take my changes. UGH.

nitpick on today's comic - into (panel 5) should be two words.

Um.... That was weird! So after my little outburst here, the font changed in the Sluggy Niftysearch input box. Yet, as near as I can tell, that was all that changed. Special characters still are not recognized. So I am puzzled by the font change, what caused it and why...

Aside from driving me crazy, when I try 10 different times to delete content, and it refuses to do so until I remove the special character from Lâu's name, the real issue is that Niftysearch is no longer capable of searching for certain terms. Input "Zoë" to NiftySearch and it will not find anything, because it no longer recognizes "ë". Input "Zoe" and it will only find "Zoe" in the last few years, not all the Zoë's in the first 15+ years of transcripts. Similar issues for "Book of Güd" "Book of Uhglëë" "Lâu Pang", etc.

If y'all are aware of the issue, then you can kind of get around the issue most of the time by searching for "Book of" or for "Pang", but work-arounds are not always that obvious.... :-(

From what I have checked, writing "into" in a single word for "into despair" seems to be the correct way to spell the word.

Hmm. You may be partially correct, Guigui. However, in this case, the verb in the sentence is a compound (or phrasal) verb. That is, "give in" is the verb. Since "in" must go with "give" in this sentence, it cannot also go with "to". So tube_rat's correction is correct.

A phrase that may be less obvious would be "fall into despair" vs. "fall in to despair". Is the verb in this sentence "fall" or "fall in"? I think both phrases could be used here, but I would favor the first: Where are you falling? Into despair. If you want to delve farther into the question, see https://www.grammarbook.com/blog/definitions/into-vs-in-to/ (the comments section at the end is helpful).

That is some most excellent pedantry, @swmartian. I'm usually the grammar cop (or at least the one grinding his teeth at other people's misusage) but I was with GUIGUI on the "give into despair." Your explanation of compound verbs was most enlightening!

Today's strip, first panel, should say "we were almost freed" not "we we're almost freed".

https://archives.sluggy.com/daily.php?date=2021-05-06, Panel 6:

"What gave me a way? My Silver Tongue?"

should be

"What gave me away? My Silver Tongue?"

Also, the note refers to the Bug's 'host' (for lack of a better word) as "Sevra". "Sevra" was only used when Quint was (badly) speaking a foreign (to him) language. The character was introduced as "Servra" and referred to as "Servra" in every other instance. Just sayin'....

Monday's comic, in panel 6 King Farahn talks about "you spell-caster's need". You shouldn't have the apostrophe there, it should be "no need for the rigorous years of training and practice I hear you spell-casters need."

Report of tail of balloon pointing the wrong way usually go in the corresponding thread of the comic (Pete tend to notice it quicker), it's not usually reported in the typo war thread, as far as I know.
