Yes, but that's the decision they made in the 1960s when they chose the racist white vote over the black vote for the sake of the power they needed to earn their bribes from the psychopathic plutocrats. There isn't an off ramp to that decision; anything they do to upset their new base will alienate them without any possible immediate replacement, and thus leave the politicians doing it looking for an actual bribe-free job. Anyone not happy with that (and there were a few) was purged, and what was left are the creatures we see now who are incapable of making that decision.

The rest was just a matter of time until their new majority discovered (more accurately, were shown) that they are the majority and can demand to be treated as such; and here we are.

Lunatics taking over the asylum, etc. Now they're carefully tiptoeing around the Jewish Space Lasers lady. Her constituents really believe she's going to successfully impeach Biden.

They've had opportunities to pivot away from relying on angry white people, but every time they double down. Remember when everyone thought Jeb or Rubio would get the 2016 nomination? And that Romney used to be the blandest, most mainstream face of the Republican Party? Now Romney is a pariah except in Utah and I can't imagine anyone remotely sane getting the 2024 nomination.

But that's the problem: since the rise of the Tea Party they've been completely incapable of making that pivot without sacrificing their own power. Once the psychopathic rich men who didn't run the party realized that they could fund their own candidates on the Republican line, and that by pandering to the white losers in the base those candidates would win, it was all over. To try to pretend to be above that sort of thing was to split the party and hand power to the Democrats for the foreseeable future.

That it's entirely the fault of the corporate tools that the outsider plutocrats can get away with that, thanks to their corrupting of campaign finance laws, may strike the handful of corporate tools capable of being thoughtful as a bit ironic: but such is life.

Oh I agree that the Tea Party sprouted the seeds of doom. Even the remaining Koch brothers are worried about what they have unleashed. Unfortunately they screwed over too many other people for me to enjoy the schadenfreude.

It occurs to me that most of the Republican Senators either actively or tacitly told Trump's lies which got Capitol Hill stormed. Having them on the jury is not that dissimilar to asking mafia dons to judge Lucky Luciano...

That's exactly what it is. In any reasonable court they'd have been ejected from the jury pool so hard they'd fly out the courthouse doors like an errant projectile.

Anyone in their situation with even an ounce of conscience and respect for the law would recuse themselves and leave their vote to a neutral third party. But they have none of that, and thus do none of that.

It's not as though impeachments are real trials, they're political throwdowns. Trump's lawyers could wave pompoms shouting "my client is guilty" and the Republicans would still acquit him. All they care about is satisfying the base and covering their arses.

Well, seven Republicans who think Trump's an intolerable danger to their wing of the party did make this the most bipartisan impeachment vote so far. For what little that's worth. And now it's the turn of the DAs, which might be a bit more interesting.

Too bad we needed 17. This doesn't count the aborted Nixon trial right? Because he only resigned because the would have convicted him.

Good luck to Georgia and New York. They're going to need it. I wonder about jury selection though. If you are required to have jurors who don't have set views on the defendant, aren't they by definition required to find 12 ignoramuses? If a single low key Maga-adjacent person makes it on there, Trump walks. It'll be a circus like the OJ trial.

If a MAGA type makes it on, they throw them out and replace them with one of the alternate jurors when deliberations break down at many to one. As for finding a jury in the first place, well, as a practical matter they have to take folks who know who the defendant is and a fair amount of what he's done. The defense may not care for it, but oh well: 'They've heard of the previous president' isn't grounds to strike.

I'm just idly wondering if 'they follow the right wing lie machine' will be considered grounds to strike or if they'll need a bit more than that.

If a adherent of the right wing propaganda machine makes it in, you may as well hit the mistrial button in advance because Trump's lawyers just have to find a receptive audience for the old "Trump didn't really mean to pressure Georgia to change the election results, he never means anything he says, except for when he does, but his mind is a beautiful chaos tornado so who can really tell? See, reasonable doubt!"

(You may not even need Hannity fans for that, just a bunch of low information voters susceptible to bad logic.)

Anyhow, I will be impressed if they get him to trial at all. These rich slimebags always seem to weasel out of it.

New poll says 70% of registered Republicans still want Trump to be their leader and 40% of them want their party to be even more right wing (whereas 25% want it to be more moderate). So whatever happens to Trump, about 1/6 of the public wants to go straight up Mussolini.

Y'know, it's not easy to come up with a better working definition of a modern Republican than someone who can't see the upside of weatherproofing a wind turbine.

Oh, and Trump's going to be speaking at CPAC. One wonders what third world hellhole of a red state will allow that kind of a superspreader event these days.

Eh, it wouldn't have helped much to weatherproof the wind turbines in Texas when most of the problem was ruptured or blocked gas pipelines, frozen solid coal piles, and frozen instruments in fossil fuel burning power plants. You would think that the increasing prevalence of extreme weather events might be a clue that climate change is real, but infrastructure investment is an extremely sluggish game at the best of times.

Um, most of them? It's pretty obvious that elected Republicans fear Trump's disapproval more than they do their people dying. They'll probably go out of their way to have CPAC in a Trump branded hotel.

Of course not. Because obviously cold weather means climate change/global warming is a hoax!

I wonder how many of the folks down at CPAC enjoyed rubbing the noses of the 'Christians' in the base in the dung with that golden idol of Trump?
