I thought, quite on the contrary, that he has always made a point for the character to remain on sync with our time. With event like the 2000's bug actually mattering. But I think after 2011 (last time a current year was mentioned) he decided to get a bit out of sync.
Make me wonder if a certain bald character with a squirrel for his hair will become more relevant at some point.
