Wright shrugs as he searches. "An enchantment of some kind. What kind, I have no idea; but apparently it's either bound to this city or inhabited by something bound to this city. Or it could simply be a miracle, and some power feels like being informative."

Apart from food and fuel, Wright finds that the residential area is well stocked with the necessities of day to day life for a medieval merchant in a sizable city. There seems to have been a number of candles and a good amount of food, but those have long since been consumed before the resident's untimely passing. The kitchen has a wood stove but the iron rack that holds the wood sits empty.

With the exceptions of food and substances that can be used to fuel Light and Warmth (furniture itself notwithstanding), Wright can find a small amount of most things he might expect to find in the merchant's house. The Merchant's Quarters is good, livable space and one or two people can reside here comfortably if supplied with food and fire.

Humphrey gives Wright a remarkably sceptical look. "Well, it'll be easy enough to disprove, at least - we just need to light up a fire in this house, and see."

Wright heads straight to the wardrobes and chests. He's looking for warm clothing that's more or less in his size, and sewing supplies if it comes to that. Then he'll gather up such tools as are to hand that may be more efficient at various tasks than a bastard sword. "There's broken wood right out that door, sir; and we can use better light in here. It looks like there's warm clothing here to be found, though it may need tailoring."

Wright finds some clothes that will more or less fit him and Humphrey. Most of it won't fit Rook, but some of it can likely be fitted for him readily enough. On a shelf next to the wardrobe he finds a nice leather traveling pack that can be used to carry a fair bit of what Wright feels he needs.

The Human gets together one or two bits of wood in the fireplace, and uses his candle to light them.

It's not a serious fire. It's just an attempt to disprove the black guy's assertion that the book changes its appearance when a fire is lit. Once he has something burning, he'll check the book again.

Once the human and the elf are fitted with warm clothes, and the dwarf has chosen something to be fitted later, Wright is ready to search the main level of the shop. Though he will stick around for the fire lighting just to see how the book responds.

Humphrey gets together a couple pieces of wood from the wreckage downstairs that look pretty good and sets about the task of lighting a fire. It takes some time but with the candle providing a constant source of flame he has a small fire going after a bit.

There aren't any immediate changes in the observable vicinity since the party's combined light sources are driving away the cold fog. As Humphrey turns to look at the map, however, he notices a third golden dot slowly shimmer into existence over the spot on the map indicating the shop. The dot gently expands into a small circle similar to the others. As it expands, the areas nearest to the center of town where the shop and tavern are located become somewhat more defined. Vague lines that could be roads or buildings stand out just a little bit more against the paper. No discrete features are visible still yet beyond what is already shown, but the map definitely has a little bit more detail to it than there was before.

Wright looks at the changed map. "That could be useful. I wonder if that would work if we built small fires in the buildings around the castle?"

Rook selects a hooded cloak. He will let the extra length drag on the ground for now.

"Oi knew dis place 'ad to be full of zorzery. People don' juzt wake up with no memohries."

OOG: We didn't wake up nude, did we?

Humphrey stares at the map, then carefully scratches at the new circle with a fingernail to see whether it comes off.

He thinks about this for a long moment, and then he gives Wright a suspicious look. "How did you do that?" he asks.

After a second, Wright smiles a bit. "I am neither a god nor some sort of mage. The book is apparently enchanted or blessed in some way." He shakes his head once then adds: "And whatever I may have known about wizardry or thaumaturgy has long since gone into hiding with the rest of my substantial memories. But I do remember that I'm getting hungry. Shall we go see if there are any useful supplies still below us in this building?"

Wright nods. "And if we don't find anything else, it can be the food. But before we try to kill it some armor or a shield would be nice, or perhaps healing supplies. Maybe the makings of a decent trap, some ammunition, or a bow of some kind. Something safer than simply trying to run it through in street clothes."

Humphrey gives Wright a deeply suspicious Look, and begins to closely investigate the map. Moving his hand around doesn't blank out part of the image, so it's not projected onto the page; running his fingers over the print or trying to scrape it off with a fingernail likewise doesn't work; the page could always be some kind of super-thin flexible screen with a battery concealed in the spine of the book, perhaps, but it certainly feels like paper...
