Bumped into this online today:

I think we may be seeing quite a few of these on the roads in the future.

Huh. That is interesting.

And exactly the sort of thing you'd have in storage back at the ship. Though I'm not sure that "engineered plywood" would have survived a few million years in an atmosphere that destroyed next to everything organic that wasn't particularly well protected; but that'll be easily fixed once the home village has got itself properly up and running.

I'd love to see plywood evaporate, myself. That aside, how far from the castle does the clearing run? Are the woods a stones throw away, a hundred meters, or what?

"Rot" is probably a better word than "evaporate".

As to the woods; there's a fairly open (unpaved) road that leads right up to the end of Castle Radun's drawbridge. Castle Radun itself has a drawbridge, a moat (several metres wide), and some very heavy, very thick exterior walls. There is a portcullis.

The road up the the drawbridge runs straight through the woods; the woods are on both sides, and some of the trees are close enough to the moat that their roots are actually in the water.

Right. "Water". A lot of places with moats back in the old days would have outhouses with chutes that emptied directly into the moats. Though that may or may not be he case here.

Mostly water.

There's a small stream flowing in, and a small stream flowing out. Whatever may have been added to it, it's pretty clearly mostly water by now.

Not that Arkady is telling them anything about the trees that isn't obvious to all of them. This place clearly hasn't been seriously threatened in generations (and apparently is more than happy to drag their fire and construction wood a ways).

I think we brought a chainsaw? Felix can handle cutting the trees while Arkady builds the traps? Assuming we go that route.

We've got three weeks and they've got hundreds of men with axes (and perhaps saws). Let's not hog all the fun to ourselves.

They can be doing other things. Why have a hundred men do one job when one man can do that same job in the same amount of time? Or Felix could do the cutting while they carry the logs and process them into usable materials with the chips and branches being used to make more methanol for the chainsaw and maybe some fire flasks for our people to throw.

Depending on their armament situation we could probably show their smiths a few metalworking pointers and get the local guards some better base gear.

Depends on whether or not the locals have saws suitable for cutting down trees. If not the fake knights will be confronted with a whole lot of trees which were cut down in a very strange way (aka, not with axes); which might make them a bit suspicious that something is up. Granted that unless we're very careful they'll think that anyway. But why make it more obvious?

Besides, I'm sure there are some peasants around somewhere who would love the opportunity to cut some wood for themselves (even if it's just a piece of the action).

Idea. Felix cuts down a whole bunch of trees and creates a massive yard. The logs are used to create a wall. We teach the locals how to make gunpowder (assuming the ingredients are available) and blast the stumps out of existence. Tidy the blasted bits up and till it over, claim it's the Count's personal farm to be tended by his servants or some such. Close the gate behind the enemy as they enter so they can't flee, then blast them to bits from afar.

After that the Count can use the cleared and walled land however he pleases.

It has not, in fact, been seriously threatened in generations. The Radun family have been generally well-liked, and are deep in Elene territory besides.

Also, cutting firewood is what peasants do. They live down that-a-ways a bit, and occasionally deliver firewood as part of their rent. (In the unlikely event that an actual war happens in the vicinity, they are allowed to wait it out in the Castle if they like).

Over the generations, has the courtyard been allowed to become indefensible? Lots of openings into the various buildings, lots of outbuildings under the walls, and etc?
