Arkady tells Captain Argent "According to this baron, it is 'crown land'. No one has said he represents their monarch. I suspect he's...what is the word...poaching." Back to Elene: "We intend to settle on this world. It sounds like we should discuss this with the crown."

Felix nods at Arkady's words.

"We should be careful to watch our words," Felix states in English to Arkady. "This man seems to be a lackey for the Primate Raven, who is suspected of poisoning Her Majesty the Queen in a bid for power. If the Knights are to be believed, the Primate would not hesitate to march the armies at his disposal down here and simply take what we have."

As soon as he and Sir Bevier get out of earshot, Nate starts quietly talking.

"Any advice on how to handle this joker?"

"Don't trust him any further than you can throw him," says Sir Bevier, "and never, never, leave him alone with small children. He's strongly loyal to the Primate and aligned with the Regent - I've heard rumours that the Primate may be blackmailing him - so he won't be persuaded to work against their interests, but at the same time, he doesn't have enough power to offer concessions on their behalf. He doesn't like to get his hands dirty, but he has more than enough money to hire other people to do his dirty work for him. Personally, I'd recommend having as little as possible to do with him."

--------------

Baron Harparin looks down his nose at Arkady. "Very well," he says, "assemble your delegation, and I will escort you to the Capital, where the Regent Lycheas or his duly chosen representative will hear your case."

Captain Argent nods at Felix' words. "We're in no position to hold off an army," he says, "but once we get the food production up and running, we can start waking more people up -"

"The size of the army we could, theoretically, hold off will soon begin to grow exponentially," adds David. "Eventually we will be able to easily hold off almost any army, given that the attackers have nothing with a longer range than a bow and arrow and on the condition that we do not run out of bullets. Naturally, such violent means are to be considered only as a very last resort."

Captain Argent nods. "So, above all," he says, "what we need is time. Official permission to settle here is of course the grand prize, but failing that, any delay works to our advantage."

"He wants us to assemble a delegation to meet with the Regent to talk about our petition to stay on these lands," Felix tells the Captain. He makes certain he's speaking in English. "I figure that'll be myself, Nate and Arkady since the three of us can speak the language. If we go, we'll stall for as much time as possible. Maybe even try to meet with potential allies or persons of interest that can help us out. That's if something doesn't happen to us, at any rate, but we'll try."

Felix turns toward the Captain, his eyes serious. He makes sure he continues speaking English so the Baron won't understand him.

"I think we need to accelerate our time table. Wake up a small batch of people to try and get more work done. More engineers to build and repair what we need. Generate power and set up defenses. Fix the refrigeration systems so we'll have that. People who can hunt wild game and gather wild plants to help stretch out our food reserves for as long as possible. I'll see if I can't get one of the Knights to stay here. We finished work on a simple computer program that should let you talk with him, though it hasn't been tested yet. If push comes to shove we might need to part with some surplus materials and trade for extra food to feed the colonists until hydroponics is up and running. He'll be able to trade for you, if you go that route."

In Elene, Arkady says "I'll see what I can do." He switches to English and with a slight smile says "I do not wish to value myself too highly, but my wife will kill me if I let the only three who speak Elene be taken hostage by this man without saying anything. I think we should tell him we will make arrangements with our friends inside, and then have a long talk with the knights before we agree to anything. Needless to say, they and not he are invited back inside. I seem to remember they left some of their things in there?"

"Yeah, arrangements will need to be made, definitely," Felix replies in English. "Plans adjusted and problems accounted for. We'll need to discuss things in depth."

In English, Arkady adds: "And of course, all the Terrans who are inside, on duty, and watching us need to be consulted. It is only polite. And we should tell the Baron and his men this. It is only polite."

"I am in full agreement with you, Mister Fedorenko," says Captain Argent, nodding at Arkady. "We should retreat indoors and consult with our fictitious but alert and well-armed brethren, of whose existence someone who speaks the language fluently should inform the Baron. David and myself shall administer the colony going forward."

The Baron watches all of this chatter in English with an expression of what he probably thinks is great patience.

"Alright, you heard the Captain," Felix replies in English. "All aboard that's going aboard. We've got things that need discussing."

Turning his attention to the Baron, he begins speaking in Elene.

"We'll be going aboard to consult with our brothers and sisters," Felix replies. "After that we'll be back down to talk plans for this delegation."

The meat tended to, Nate and Sir Bevier wander back to the group.

In english, Nate explains his brief conversation with the knight.

"I think it might be a good idea to bring along something a little quicker than a horse if we need to make a fast getaway, as well as a few items to help secure wherever it is that we end up staying."

"Also, has anyone seen Piper?" Nate looks around for their young ward.

"We do need a discussion on what all we need to bring," Felix replies to Nathan in English. "It's been a little while since I've seen Piper... That's a touch worrisome."

"Well, don't take too long," says the Baron, snootily. "We don't have all day."

"I'll stay out here and keep our guests company," offers Sir Ulath. "Just to make sure nothing... untoward happens. After all, we did have a manticore attack a few days ago..."

The Baron's retinue glances around, worried; the Baron himself doesn't seem to care.

--------------

Sir Bevier joins the group heading onto the ship. They find Piper almost instantly; she's sitting on the table in the conference room, surrounded by half-a-dozen little plastic toys that she must have dug out of one of the warehouses, with a toy cup-and-saucer in front of each toy, apparently having an impromptu tea party. Anyone and everyone who sits at the table gets an empty teacup - with saucer - placed in front of them fairly promptly.

"So," says the Captain, once they're all inside, "to summarise the situation; we have some local Baron, offering to take us for an interview with the Regent. The Regent, currently in power, has control of an army and can cause serious trouble if he means to. The Regent may be merely a figurehead for this Primate Raven person, but either way, the army is real."

"Felix has proposed accelerating our time table, waking people up more quickly in order to get more built and grow more food. David, how practical is this idea?"

David looks up from the tablet he'd been fiddling with. "Very practical," he says. "None of the other engineers we have in storage are likely to have Felix's ability to get things working at speed, but even with just the people we have currently awake, I would be very surprised if it takes us more than a week to get hydroponics up and running. We're five days' travel from the capital - that's for a bunch of horsemen, an army will take significantly longer to cover the same distance, so unless they're already on their way, we've probably got a good two weeks before an army could get here, and that's before and delaying that our diplomatic force can put into place. By that time we should be able to get at least a rudimentary defence up and working. We can certainly wake up a lot more people."

"Excellent," says the Captain. "Felix, I do agree that it would probably be a good idea to have one of the Knights stay here. I'll have to have a look at that software, but if you say it can translate, I'm sure we can work with it. If necessary, we can communicate with the bridge's main screen and the clipart library, but we will need someone who actually speaks the language to handle trade with the farmers. In short, we will do fine over here."

"Now," he continues, "the three of you - Felix, Nathan, Arkady. You speak the local language. I think it would therefore be best if the three of you were to take this Baron up on his offer. It's probably a good idea to take one of the Knights with you, to help navigate the political structure of the Capital. Piper, I believe, would be better off staying here with us. We already know that there are two major factions in the capital - one pro-Queen, one pro-Regent. Try not to take sides, especially when that means the opposing side will crush us; allies are good, but delaying tactics are sufficient and avoiding getting an army down on our heads is paramount. It might even be worthwhile to play the sides against each other a little. Is there anything that the three of you believe you will need on your expedition?"

"Aside from the obvious general supplies, tools and gadgets..." Felix ponders. "Might be a good idea to grab one of those backpack radios in storage. The ones meant for people out on long range scouting missions to find exploitable resources. That way I can relay back regular reports concerning our diplomatic mission and how far south it seems to be going."

Felix scratches his head and laughs nervously.

"So they won't see me talking into it and get suspicious, I could rig it to send a regular low power pulse to the ship so you guys will be able to track our general movements. See if you need to build a relay to catch the signal better if it looks like you might lose us before we get to where we're going."

After a moment's thought, Felix turns to Sir Bevier and speaks to him in Elene.

"We're hoping that one Knight will stay behind and continue to support the crew of the ship, while the other goes forward with myself, Nathan and Arkady to help us navigate the political landscape of this delegation. The one who stays behind would help in such matters as trade with local villages to help get more food, since no one staying behind would be capable of communicating with the locals. What say you, Sir Bevier?"

Arkady duly takes his teacup, thanks Piper in Elene, and then glances over at Nate. In English he observes "No weapons or armor, apparently 6 years old, all alone in the woods with monsters; and yet she has no obvious wounds or trauma of any kind. She isn't even particularly dirty. I don't think we need to worry too much about her avoiding the baron's sort of danger." Looking back at her, he asks in Elene: "Do want to stay here, or will you go wandering off again soon? Some of us are going to be leaving with that nasty man out there, others staying to tend to the work that needs to be done."
