It's time for CHAPTER THREE!

This chapter is going to be about Holidays! I gotta tell you I'm a little worried --the Sci-Fi adventure is great, but I don't want them to jump the shark with crappy "seasonal" episodes, in which things happen but are never referenced or thought about again. Oh well, hopefully Pete'll keep it nice and tight --you can read the first strip here and the last strip here.

This chapter was kindof a jump, length wise --two months and six days! Still, not that much reading to do, not really.

Wow, this is a ton of stuff. We have Sam. And development on Zoë! And then Dr. Schlock!! And the Freelance Bum comment! Baywatch obsession! And Sam already got Kiki! And Dr. Lorna, who's Riff's mom! Thankfulness for the right to shoot telemarketers! Bun-bun chews wires! And Santa's first battle! And I didn't even finish the chapter!

Bun-Bun... has he displayed engineering abilities like the Torg costume since then?

Sluggy passes the Bechdel test. (Zoe and Dr. Lorna discussing Zoe's job at the station) I figured it would be Zoe and Gwynn who cause The Comic to pass; Ironically, In Gwynn's first appearance she and Zoe discuss men. Ah well.

I never really noticed before, but Zoe does in fact look Asian in the older comics. I think at some point Pete changes the style of her eyes to be a bit more round though.

Man there is some classic Sluggy in this chapter. Torg and Riff's punning during the zombie arc. Bun-Bun and Kiki. Bun-Bun and Santa. The "normal bunny" strip, which I have always loved. The ominous MOO. Torg and Zoe kiss. The list goes on.

Defend the Bird!

It really is amazing how many plot points in this chapter continue to be relevant to this day. I think it's safe to say that when people refer to "classic Sluggy", THIS is the chapter they're thinking of, even if they don't realize it. Hell, "Sluggy of the Living Freelance" is probably my favorite comic of all time. And the awesome parody of Night Before Christmas! And the first beer exchange!! And HOLY CRAP, I totally forgot that it was Bun Bun who took Schlock's eye! That explains why a certain later chapter in a certain rainy dimension built by a certain guy from the future is missing a certain mini lop...certainly.

drachefly - I'm not gonna look it up, but I vaguely remember Pete lampshading Torgbot as a machine Bun Bun co-opted from Riff? That could be completely wrong. I suppose we're going to find out for ourselves eventually.

Yup, awesome chapter.

Good ol' chapter 3...

Some thoughts as they occur:

- What does the RBF stand for on Zoe's shirt??
- Why the hell do I not even remember half of the stuff in this chapter?? I remember the overall gist of the story through this chapter, but the day-to-day comics seem to have all slipped from my memory!
- Oh you, Dr. Lorna!
- WHPD station -- haha, whipped! It's funny because I'm not sure if I just don't remember little things like that, or if I Just missed it.
- Ah the first pun-storm. Doesn't Pete usually put the "pun demon" somewhere in the pun-based comics he does?
- I love that, in the new year comic where Zoe kisses Torg, even his flannel looks extra-attractive.

December 22nd: I'm shocked that Bun-Bun allows Torg to be so casually intimate with him.

Aand, I just finished the chapter. Have a reaction for next time though...

This is an incredibly quotable chapter for me!

Stuff I still say, despite years away from the comic includes:

"I can't go now...I don't have...my...shoes on."
"Freelance Bum"
"I think this comic needs a new sound guy"

And it occurs to me that this is the first time I've read this comic and known what ebonics was for the "look at how well adjusted you are, no smoking, no piercings, no ebonics" and that's...weirdly racist. Not that I expect anything less from Dr. Lorna, but _damn!_.

OK, I'm obviously significantly behind you guys, but I just had to reply. While we're starting to hear our favorite phrases already, "I think this comic needs a new sound guy" is not one of them for me - because (spoiler alert) the sound effects just keep getting better and better!

Also, this chapter contains one of my all time favorite comics. I love the Christmas strip with Bun-Bun hanging from the Christmas lights. It was one of those things that hooked me into the comic: that Bun-Bun is a mix of super bad-ass and yet still a "normal" cute-but-annoying bunny. I miss (spoiler alert) that Bun-Bun doesn't chew things just because anymore. I kind of wish that Pete would market one of the Bun-Bun beanies with a clip where his mouth should be, so that we can hang it from the Xmas lights. Yeah, I know I could probably just sew one on myself, but I already have so many of those little things to do that never get done...
