Professor Barnes lets them win for a while, then does his best to take their money. He'll keep up the cycle of winning and losing as best he can, always trying to keep the guards thinking they can take more and then wanting to get their money back, for as long as possible, to give the team time to complete their task.

Professor Barnes

Gambling: +0
Roll: -2

Security guards: Gambling: +0, +0, +0 Rolls: +2, -1, -1

It's easy for Professor Barnes to manage the first part of his plan - he loses the first three hands straight-out. It's when he gets to the second part of his plan that he finds it impossible - he only ever seems to win when the pot is small. They're playing for small change, so Barnes can keep the guards distracted pretty much as long as he wants - but it's soon clear to him that the guards are going to end up with more of his money than he will end up with of theirs.

Tom, the guy sitting on the windowsill, seems to have a gift for reading body language - that, or an infallible instinct for when Barnes is bluffing and when he really has a good hand.

As the game continues, the guards' chitchat turns from the game to the tedium of their job. "And what's the point of it all?" asks Clarence. "You know what they've got us guarding? They've got us guarding a server. A stupid little backup server for a stupid little program that's supposed to be taking over the world or some such." He claims his winnings, and deals out the next hand. "And the worst of it is, they're firing us tomorrow. 'Downsizing', they say. 'Surplus to requirements'." He snorts.

Spot hauls out a circuit tester to see if the lines leading towards the various shutter controls are currently live. If there's no current flowing through them, it cuts the one leading to the door they just came through...preferably somewhere the cameras can't see. Then it starts downstairs with the humans.

The lines to all the shutters are live. A close inspection shows that the lines each power an electromagnet, which holds the shutter open - as soon as the current is interrupted, for whatever reason, the shutter that it connects to will slam shut, powered by a purely mechanical spring system.

Spot removes a container of adhesive from it's bag, and ensures that the front door won't be closing unexpectedly on them. As best it's able, anyway. Failing that, a piece of furniture in the way might work.

A spot of adhesive here, a careful adjustment of a key spring there - and the door should stay unshuttered even if the system tries to shutter it. Unfortunately, there isn't any furniture around to place in the gaps; fortunately, furniture has not proved necessary.

With great care, the Singularity Hunters tiptoe down the corridor. The Singularity Key proteccts them from all electronic observation; there's a lot of cameras here, but none of them register the group's progress. The less-dusty trail leads down into the basement...

...but when the group is about ten metres in, there's a sudden hissing sound of gas. Spot, of course, does not breathe; and King Wilshire holds his breath for long enough to put on the gas mask that the other Hunters had insisted on giving to them.

Thomas and David, however, slump to the floor unconcious. The Singularity Key rolls from Thomas' hand, stopping a few centimetres away.

Wilshire grabs the Singularity Key and follows the wires, leaving behind his fallen comrades. He's not the greatest team player.

"Hey, what about Thomas?" asks the key, as Wilshire drags it away. "Don't just leave him there!"

The wires lead to a door, which is open as Wilshire approaches. It suddenly closes just before he gets to it... and then, half a minute later, opens again, just as suddenly.

On the far end of the room through the door, there's a set of rack-mounted servers. Wilshire may not know them by that name, but he does recognise what he came in here to smash. There's also a lot of cameras and stuff around the room.

Wilshire: Alertness: +1 Roll: 0 Total: +1
Spot: Alertness: +3 Roll: -1 Total: +2

When the door closes, both Spot and Wilshire notice a line of light along the edge - as if someone had turned on the lights in the room while the door was closed, and then turned them off again before opening the door. But when the door opens, there's no sign of anyone in the room, and unless there's a secret alcove behind the servers, there's not exactly much room for anyone to hide (though someone could always be standing flat against the wall to one side of the door). It's also quite possible that the lights are being operated remotely, or are on some sort of timer switch.

Spot carries the humans along down the stairs and out of the gas. This somewhat slows it down, so it reaches the door rather behind Wilshire.

Does Spot hear, or feel anything by way of vibrations, aside from the humans on this side of the door before it reopens? Or for that matter, afterwards?

Spot waits for the door to close, and then listens carefully at the door...

Spot: Investigation: +3 Roll: +1 Total: +4

Listening carefully at the door, Spot picks up some vibrations - consistent with a voice speaking quietly. He can only make out a few of the words: "Ah! ...are at...drop your...not working." When the voice stops speaking, there's a brief pause, then the light inside goes out and the door opens.

There's no sound of footsteps, and as far as Spot can tell, the voice is coming from the far end of the room (quite visible when the door opens); it's quite possible, even probable, that the voice is emitting from some sort of electronic speaker system.

Spot points a tentacle in that direction. "Something over there spoke. They know we are here."

"Then it is time for crushing!" Wilshire runs into the room, swinging the key in an attempt to destroy the servers.

Spot has just a moment to decide whether to be inside or outside the room when the doors close on Wilshire.

When Wilshire is halfway to the servers, the doors slam shut and the lights turn on. "Ah! There you are at last." calls a voice from the direction of the servers. "You might as well drop your invisibility shield, since it's clearly not working."

There's no-one visible there, and clearly no place for anyone to hide.

Wilshire speaks no words and drops nothing. He does not take orders from craven witch boxes. Wilshire smashes at the servers with the key in a violent fury.
