Hey all. This is from Malice (I'm just serving as a go-between)
"My internet browser refuses to find Sluggy.com or Sluggy.net or any derivation of such. I use Flock, a version of Firefox, but I've also tried and failed in Internet Explorer. It worked up until sometime yesterday. I'm using Windows XP on a Dell notebook. I don't think I've changed any settings or anything; my guess is maybe something related to the site's recent outage is the issue, but I don't know what. Any ideas?"
(He's tried going straight to sluggy.net/forum, and to specific forums, but no dice.)
(Apologies if this is posted in the wrong place.)

I may be wrong, but that sounds like it's some sort of DNS issue, in which case it probably doesn't have anything to do with the other night's problems. Does it produce an error something along the lines of "Server not found
Flock can't find the server at sluggy.net"? If so that's likely the problem.
Unless you fancy setting your machine to use alternative DNS servers, the best option is to wait; this kind of problem usually fixes itself after a day or two.
But, of course, I could be completely wrong.

You could try using the straight IP address.
I believe Sluggy.com is 72.36.173.106 and Sluggy.net is 72.36.173.107

I had problems going to sluggy.net too. Then I checked my browser history for individual forums and that let me log on.

The whole site has been going a bit wonky for the last day or so. Seems to be ok now though.
edit: Nix what I said about it being ok. Seems to be going up and down again.

I had the same problem on and off all day yesterday.
It started right after I stole Rit's pants....I'm sure that had nothing to do with it though.
I'm sure too. It's probably because of light from Venus being reflected by a weather balloon through some marsh gas or something. ASB

No kidding - I've noticed all kinds of weird problems with different sites the last few days. Probably just apocalyptic signs heralding the end of days ever since Random Silliness returned to the boards. You know, at a guess.

You know, I should be flattered that Kristy is stealing my pants but I might make her boyfriend jealous, and he can kick my ass (at guitar hero).
In all seriousness, I know there have been problems w/ Sluggy. The legacy code we're running on is unravelling at the edges, and we're having some server problems.
Both problems are being worked on, we are talking to our hosting provider about getting off of the 3 or 4 year old machine we're on and onto something more...modern (Like a freaking ENIAC).
There HAVE been some minor DNS issues as well, which are separate. Pete and I will be fixing that permanently this coming Sunday, as we're dumping our current DNS host.

And yes, the site blew up Tuesday morning at about 2am which might explain it.
Something went crazy on the web server process and tried to devour Pete's brain.
Fortunately it was satiated after that light snack, and Pete is much happier as a vegetable.
We'll be fixing all of this soon.

I had the same problems with sluggy.com and sluggy.net.
On the Sprint EVDO network, to give you information that is useful. For the last three days or so that I know of. I let Sprint know and dropped an email to the Sluggy mailbox, too.
I added the following entries to my etc/hosts file, but most other people who have the same problem won't know to lookup sluggy.com with an external DNS web site to do that.
72.36.173.106 sluggy.com
72.36.173.107 sluggy.net www.sluggy.net
Linux location: /etc/hosts
Typical Windows 2000/XP/Vista location: C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc
Unless you do it like that, you can't log into the forum because it has some 'sluggy.net' hardwired links attached to the login. Not that anybody who doesn't already know all of that who is having the problem can log into this forum and read this message.... :)
It might help to make some sort of announcement external to the sluggy.net/sluggy.com domains. I knew it was probably up when I searched the web for mention about the site being down and didn't find any.

I got database errors about updating 'word lists' and the posts weren't appearing. Sorry for the multiple posts!
I removed them for the sake of tidiness. -WE

Yeah, I got the same thing. I went to the index, and then back to the thread where I posted and my post was there, so I managed to avoid double posting that way. Not sure how many people that'll occur to, though.

I've been getting the same error. It seems to post the replies to threads as usual, but the thread I tried to start didn't show up at all.
In addition, the 'last post' at the index doesn't seem to be updating for me, not sure if this is a problem for everyone or just me though.
Edit: When I post this of course, there was no issue with 'adding words to the search' or something. Not sure if its fixed though.
