The Sluggite Zone Community Standards

Welcome
If you're new to our community, jump right in. If you're an "old-timer," please greet newcomers and help them feel at home. This community is here for all of us, and we want it to be comfortable, thought provoking, helpful, safe, and easy to use.

Your Community Manager is Wile E . Our Community Assistants are dotwarner, inspiration and Kea. You can email or Private Message the Community Manager or Community Assistants any time you have a question or concern.

Responsibilities and rights
  1. Please bear in mind that what you read in our community areas are other users' opinions. The Sluggite Zone is not responsible for the accuracy of any posts and is not liable for any damage or loss that may result from your reliance on what other users have said.
  2. You acknowledge that all Sluggite Zone communications, including chat and bulletin board posts, are public and not private communications. You grant The Sluggite Zone the right to modify and publish, both on our site and in other media, any information you post in our community areas.
  3. You agree that The Sluggite Zone has the right to delete any post and terminate any account (that is, ban a user) with or without notice, at any time and for any reason, including, without limitation, our judgment that you've violated the Community Standards.
  4. You also acknowledge that we have no obligation to delete content that you find personally objectionable or offensive.
  5. This message board is intended to be gathering place for fans of the comic, Sluggy Freelance. It is not required that you read the comic to be a member here, but all are expected to abide by the wishes of the comic creator on the content and management of these forums. Discussion of numerous topics are allowed in the appropriate forums, however certain topics are banned from discussion anywhere on these boards. You can find more information on these in the Conventions (rules) posted in the General Chat and Political Opinions & Opinionated Posts forums.
Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the different forums and the posting rules for each forum.

Privacy
  1. Never provide your password, telephone numbers, or home address to anyone online. Be cautious about giving out your full name online.
  2. Be very careful about responding to solicitations for interviews or research (unless invited to do so by a Sluggite Zone staff member).
  3. Give out your e-mail address only if you want to receive e-mail. If you post your e-mail address on the site (on boards or in chats), you've made it public and given other users tacit permission to contact you.
  4. Never divulge private information about another user online. That includes the user's real name, e-mail address, and any other personal information that the user has not made public.
  5. Don't forward or post private messages that someone has sent you unless you have his or her permission.
  6. Only send e-mail to another Sluggite Zone member if they have given you permission.
  7. Please don't solicit other people's personal information.
  8. If you're looking for subjects to interview or participants for a study, please first contact the Community Manager for permission.

Copyrights
Please don't post anything you don't have the right to publish or violate any copyright or other proprietary rights in your posts. That includes excerpting published articles without the author's permission. We'll delete posts that contain any such violations.

Usernames
  1. Choose a username that's in good taste. If you select a username we deem vulgar or obscene or misrepresents you to other users, we'll reject your choice.
  2. Anyone who tries to impersonate a Sluggite Zone staff member or another user will be banned immediately and without notice.
  3. If you choose a user name that is an obvious spam advertisement you will be deleted or banned.

Avatars
  1. Avatars must now be hosted off-site.
  2. Avatars are allowed to be a maximum of 100x100 pixels and 10kbs. Any poster who exceeds this limit will have the link removed from their profile. If they relink to the oversized avatar they are risking a suspension or ban.
  3. Avatars must be in good taste and abide by the PG-13 standards of this board. Avatars that violate these standards will be disabled.

Basic etiquette
Please don't do any of the following:
  1. Use all capital letters in your chat or bulletin board postings. It's considered "shouting" online, makes other members uncomfortable, and is difficult to read.
  2. Post the same message more than once on a bulletin board or on multiple boards. This includes postings on multiple boards asking other users to vote in online contests.
  3. Transfer issues or posts from one bulletin board to another. Don't quote someone else's post from another board without that person's permission. A lot of misunderstanding and hurt can ensue when a post from one place is taken out of context and shared with others. Please don't direct people to controversial or problematic threads on other boards.
  4. "Drive By Posting." Please consider what you post before posting it. Does your post contribute to the conversation? Does it say anything other than a "Me too" or "Not me"? We strongly discourage posts without useful content at the Sluggite Zone.
  5. Please do not use excessive l33t and netspeak. If you have trouble with spelling, we strongly recommend the use of a spell checker. While we're not complete grammar nazis here, we do want posts to be easy for everyone to read.
  6. Moderators use colored text when editing posts, we ask that posters stick to using black text to avoid confusion.

Unacceptable language
Please don't post anything obscene, vulgar, illegal (including viruses), harmful, insulting, threatening, abusive, harassing, defamatory, libelous, or invasive of someone else's privacy.

We won't tolerate hateful communications — especially those targeting race, gender, age, sexual orientation, religion, national origin, political party affiliation, weight, or disability.

Using asterisks or other symbols instead of the actual letters in an offensive word is not okay if most people can still tell what you're saying. If you're not sure which words are forbidden, send an e-mail to one of the Moderators. Some examples:
  1. What's okay: "My #%$&* mother-in-law is driving me nuts!" (where the symbols indicate strong feeling and maybe the urge to use a swear word, but don't suggest any specific word).
  2. What's not okay: a$$hole, etc.

Don’t Be A Jerk
Our community is fostered on a general spirit of kindness and respect. This means that while all opinions are welcome, they must be stated and discussed in a respectful manner. You may not personally attack another poster, nor may you viciously attack their point of view – such activities lead directly to a hostile environment, which is something we do not wish to foster.

More specifically (and this list is not all-inclusive) –

  • If you’ve been asked by someone else to leave them alone – do so.
  • If you wish to discuss someone else’s opinion, you are not required to agree with them, but you are required to treat the person in a civil manner.
  • Remember that each thing you say builds upon the next. Be respectful.
  • Publicly denouncing or complaining about another member of these boards is not cool. If you have a problem with someone, you can either try to resolve it in private, offsite, or you can choose to complain to the staff via PM.
  • Don't put words in other people's mouths. This means two things. First, don't claim they said something that they didn't - this also means not speaking for people. People are quite welcome to and capable of expressing their own opinions and feelings here. Allow them to speak for themselves.

Secondly, don't post private communication held with anyone without their explicit permission. Should they retract this permission at any point, you are responsible for retracting the message. If necessary, please ask for the help of a moderator in doing so.
  • If you’re not sure if something you want to say is okay, ask yourself if you would say it to someone you barely know in real life. If that crosses the bounds of politeness and civil behavior there, it does the same here.
  • If you are having a disagreement with another poster, stick to the contents of their arguments. Insults, character attacks and personal accusations will not be tolerated. You do not know these people in real life, so don't make assumptions about them.
  • Trolling will not be tolerated. If your posts are deemed by the moderating staff to be obvious attempts at trolling or flamebait, they will be subject to editing or deletion and you may be warned for those posts.

Calling another poster out publicly as a troll is akin to trolling. If you believe a poster is trolling, report him/her to the moderating staff and ignore him/her. Do not feed the trolls.

Advertising and solicitations
Don't use any community areas to advertise or sell products or services to others. For example:
  1. Please don't post (on boards or in chats) any advertising, promotional materials, junkmail, "spam," chain letters, pyramid schemes, or any other form of solicitation. If you put an obvious spam link in your profile it will be removed and you may be deleted or banned.
  2. Please don't post on our boards asking users to vote for you in online contests or polls (such as "cute baby" contests).
  3. Please don't link to scam, spam, phishing, or dubiously legal sites with your 'homepage' button. This button is intended to provide a link to a webpage you run or one which showcases your work, not to boost a google rank or generate pagehits. Posting advertising links in your website field could get your account deleted or banned as a spammer.

Mentioning other Web sites
It's perfectly okay to mention, link to, or discuss other Web sites that are of interest to our users, as long as they don't violate our other guidelines. But please don't use our message boards simply to generate traffic for a website. If you would like to advertise your personal website etc., please include the URL in your profile.

Sanctions
If it is decided by a staff member that you have been violating the Community Standards, you may get a warning. At first, such warnings will be unofficial, and the communication held with you will be in the spirit of helping you fit in to our community better. However, if a staff member feels that this is going nowhere, at his or her discretion, they may issue you an Official Warning.

When this is done, the moderator will gather documentation which may include (but is not limited to) personal communication with you and others, posts made by yourself and others, and anything else they feel pertinent and preserve it in a staff-only area.

If you are sent a second warning, you have the right to appeal one or both warnings at that point. If you choose to appeal, the Senior Community Staff (Wile E, dotwarner and inspiration) will review the documentation preserved as well as your appeal, and vote on the matter of dropping each warning.

If, at any point, you are issued 3 warnings in a six month period, a temporary ban will be triggered. The duration of the ban will be from 7-14 days, at the discretion of the Senior Community Staff, depending upon the context of the situation.

Any attempts at ban evasion will lead directly to a permanent ban.

Once you return after a temporary ban, you will be on probation for six months. This means that if any official warnings are issued to you in this period, you will be permanently banned.

Contacting us
We are only an e-mail or Private Message away if you have any concerns you'd like us to address. Please contact us in order to:
  • Report a concern about something in our chat areas.
  • Get help navigating the site or participating in our community.
  • Get clarification of these guidelines or any other aspect of our community.
  • Alert us to a violation of these guidelines.
  • Report any concern you have about our community.

Banned Email Domains and IPs
In order to cut down on spam we have banned many email addresses, domains and a few IP adddresses that were used by spammers. If you are not a spammer but a legitimate poster from one of these email domains and would like to access the forums, we regret the inconvenience to you, however it was necessary. There are many other free email programs available which you could use to register, these bans will remain in effect.
