Indeed not. I find myself *really* wondering about motive, here, though.

edit: found something

Quote:
The suspect, Tetsuya Yamagami, told investigators he acted because of Abe’s rumored connection to an organization that he resented, police said, but had no problem with the former leader’s political views. The man had developed hatred toward a religious group that his mother was obsessed about and that bankrupted a family business, according to media reports, including some that identified the group as the Unification Church.

Unification Church = The Moonies. They're bad news - not just weird cult psychologically abusing and swindling their followers bad news. Like backing multiple far right dictatorships around the world from the 1960s onwards bad news. Funding death squads bad news. Check out the episode Robert Evans did on them on the podcast "Behind the Bastards". They do have links to the right wing in Japanese politics, including Abe's grandfather.

Behind the Bastards also did an episode on Abe's grandafather, Nobusuke Kishi, who can justifiably be called a war criminal for turning Manchuria into a slave colony, but got off easy, whitewashed himself and became prime minister after WWII.

Thank you for that insight. I had a feeling you would have some.
