It suddenly occurs to me that a Sanders/Buttigieg ticket could go a long way in soothing people's fears of Sanders' brand socialism. I hope Warren gets a cabinet post too.

I'm inclined to doubt the VP choice would be a white man; Sanders is incredibly weak among the usually-Republican-because-they're-greedy suburban women who can't stand Trump, and needs someone to appeal to them on the ticket. He's also not doing great among black voters, but that might change with time since they don't actually dislike him from what I've been reading.

Buttigieg seems palatable enough to suburban women, I don't think they'd necessarily insist the VP be a woman. But I don't find it plausible that Sanders and Buttigieg would team up - at least I don't think they could convincingly bury the hatchet. He couldn't pick Warren because he needs someone substantially younger. I think Bernie would have to pick someone who hasn't been running for president.

Please don't let him pick Tulsi Gabbard - I don't know where that rumour came from, I hope it was some garbage invented by a Russian troll and nothing more.

What's wrong with Gabbard?

I don't think Sanders will go with Buttigieg, if he has an absolute majority of delegates. But it might be a move to break a stalemate.

Biggest problem is that she's a supporter of Assad. Used to be vocally anti-gay. May have grown up in an actual cult. Has ties to Hindu nationalist groups.

Gabbard is also an anti establishment candidate, AFAIK more so then Bernie.

So from a purely macchiavellistic perspective, is showing the "establishment", that is likely to get something in the area of 40% of the primary votes at least, the finger going to work better, then doing the same to the "left" did in 2016?

Bernie needs to show the voters for establishment democrats, that his attitude to them is not "you lost suckers, so shut up" and picking a VP candidate, who is mostly aligned with him in being anti establishment, is therefore not a good idea.

What cult?

Linky here. A weird Hare Krishna offshoot.

Quote:
Mike Gabbard’s (Tulsi Gabbard's father's) opposition to LGBTQ rights (as well as abortion) seemed to stem from his religious background. Born in American Samoa, he is both Catholic and a member of an obscure offshoot of the Hare Krishna sect called the Science of Identity Foundation. The group’s leader, a self-described guru named Chris Butler, has condemned homosexuality, once arguing that it led to “an increasing number of American women [keeping] dogs for sexual purposes.’”

Tulsi Gabbard grew up in Butler’s movement, which has faced allegations of cult-like practices. She told the New Yorker’s Kelefa Sanneh that he shaped her Hindu identity, speaking of her “gratitude to him for the gift of this wonderful spiritual practice that he has given to me.”

Her early political career reflected both Butler’s views and her father’s. She worked for her father’s organization, which supported the use of “conversion therapy” to try to turn kids straight.

I mean, she later changed her mind on gay rights. But this is a pretty extreme 180 degree turn, not like President Obama's moderate hedge in 2008.

Sigh. It's down to Biden vs. Bernie. I think it's only a matter of how long, drawn out, and ugly the Dems want to make this fight until they get to the DNC.

I am disappointed that Warren nosedived. By first being goaded into supporting Medicare for All and then having to show her work, she put herself on the Isle of Awkwardness as she could neither claim to be a pragmatist like Biden nor promise pie-in-the-sky like Bernie. Plus her campaign apparently made some serious mistakes by refusing to hire an outside pollster or accept large donations.

Her strength would have been, that she could have been kinda acceptable to both wings of the party. But few people vote for their second choice.

Now we have to hope, that whoever wins, makes moves to mollify the fears and resentments of the loosing side, or we have 2016 all over again.

I actually have more hopes, that Bernie can pull that off, then Biden. And i guess it would be better, if it's a contested convention, where they all meet in a smoke filled room and get to a solution, that is supported by everyone who matters, rather then either candidate getting a close win.

Unfortunately Senator Sanders is trying to have it both ways again, and is in bed with Trump and the Russians telling his supporters to stay home if he isn't chosen. He and they will weasel about it, of course; but he knows his best hope is the fear his kids will blow off the moderate if Sanders loses, so he's actively stoking that tendency.

Granted those kids don't vote anyway (the under-30 vote is even or down from what it was 4 years ago), so the DNC may decide that's not something they need to worry about all that much. Especially since Biden would pick up a lot of never-Trumpers that Sanders would alienate.

Sanders has found that it's hard to persuade moderates to vote for you when you keep telling them that they're corrupt slimebags. I really do hope that the number of immature nihilists among his supporters has declined since 2016. I've met one or two "the establishment is so corrupt that I'd rather have Trump burn it all down so that we can rebuild afterwards" 4-chan dwellers before. I hope they've learned something.

As for Warren, why hasn't she quit yet? Her vote count was barely better than Buttigieg's, so there's no possibility of her winning. Is she hanging around to draw off prospective Bernie Sanders supporters so that Biden can win more easily? Why? Hoping for a cabinet position in a future Biden administration?

Possibly in the hope, that there will be a contested convention, where she can play kingmaker.

It's Thursday morning, and nobody is voting for a few days. She still has time to get out without messing anyone up if that's her goal.

And it looks like it is, the NYT is saying she told her staff she's suspending her campaign.
