Jeez. If the WaPo happens to be right, Trump made off with nuclear secrets and refused to give them back. That's not 'lawyer up and delay' trouble.

What did he want with them? To sell them to Putin? I bet he kept them just to make himself feel important. A trophy like his fake civil war monument and fake Time Magazine cover.

It would take, I think, about 15 minutes for Fox News to figure out how to spin this so that of course it's totally normal and appropriate for ex-presidents to hang on to nuclear documents to keep them out of the hands of thieving traitorous dumbocrats, how dare the FBI invade Trump's privacy, Hillary Clinton did something even worse, they're not even nuclear codes, they're just a McDonalds menu, and also crisis actors! False flag! Biden isn't even a real president! Yeah.

Anyway, even if Trump himself doesn't run for president again, his entire party except Liz Cheney is basically openly fascist now. Yes, they've been theocratic kleptocrats for decades. But now they're fashy theocratic kleptocrats.

Yep, they went with "Trump can declassify anything he wants with a wave of his hand so it's fine for him to keep nuclear secrets", with a side of "the FBI planted nuclear secrets on him". As usual, mutually exclusive lies are no impediment. Liz Cheney's lost her primary, and so the GOP continues its merry slide past "too crazy for Cheneys" into MAGA orthodoxy. They're the American version of third world authoritarian parties who are fine with the concept of elections only so long as they're winning.

The (ahem) 'deplorables' that the GOP always used but marginalized have taken over the party by the simple expedient of being the last ones willing to admit they're part of the party, and so they choose who gets nominated. And frankly they don't really follow Trump: he follows them.

But they're not an electorally useful group; they need the pseudo-independants who won't vote Republican if it means having to admit to themselves that they're 'them', as well as a bunch of low information tuned-out types, to all keep voting Republican in order to actually win. Those clowns may not be easy to alienate, but the party is certainly doing their best to try.

Though it's fun watching them desperately not talking about the law or saying the word 'espionage'.

That's why they're doing their best to set things up so that they can declare themselves the winners regardless of how many votes they get or don't get.

Authoritarians don't need a majority. They just need complacency. And the suburban polite conservatives who have been happy to vote for bigots as long as they provide the thinnest veneer of plausible deniability ("he's not racist, he loves tacos") will probably give it to them.

The fall of Roe puts a bit of a kink in the GOP's electoral plans but that's what gerrymandering, voter suppression, and outright cheating are for.

May well give them the House, anyway.

In other news, looks like Trump's probably going to lose all that lovely money he raised for his new blog site. What a pity.

Must be nice to have appointed your own judge. Judges, plural, now that the DOJ has appealed.

The odds on the 11th circuit are so-so. But apparently choosing your own special master because he's thought to be deliberate and methodical doesn't always work out. It's got to be interesting to be TFG's 3 megabuck lawyers, knowing that if they ever document their client's claims then they can be disbarred.

Supposedly the Trumpies picked this guy because they assumed he had a grudge against the FBI from his time on a FISA court and they ran a few dodgy documents by him. As though that's not the sort of shenanigans judges see all the time.

But the whole point is to delay the investigation, which would still happen in front of an impartial, competent judge, right? Drag it out until Trump either runs for office again, or shuffles off this mortal coil, whichever happens first.

If the special master opts to carry out his threat regarding Trumpie noncompliance, then effective immediately all of the classified documents would be available to the DOJ. Perhaps a week isn't going to be enough of a delay to help TFG spin it out until after the midterms. And of course there's no way his lawyers can delay things by complying without provably filing false statements or throwing their client under the bus, so that doesn't look likely.

Edit: And the 11th circuit just overrode Cannon on the classified documents. That might be fun.

So he's asked the Supremes to return all the evidence of his absurdly easy to prove go-to-prison security related felonies to him. Thomas aside, none of them has shown willing before. It should be interesting to see if more are willing now.

A New York state judge has ordered an independent monitor for TrumpCo, basically in order to make sure no assets leave New York ahead of any potential legal liability. Needless to say Trump's crying and whining to another judge how unfair that is in order to keep his freedom to hide assets out of state. It'll be amusing to see if any higher level state court in New York is willing to help him cheat another New York court.

Trump's people had a pretty bad election day. From what I've heard some five or six dozen election deniers got elected on the strength of their 'R' in various lesser spots, but the big ticket races went rather badly. And what's worse, his buddy DeSantis did really well under Florida's very Republican election rules (which will do for these purposes); both are now eying the big (though not electric) chair.

Still, his little creature in Georgia could still pull it off in the special election to come. Trump might interest himself in that to try to salvage something there. We'll have to see. As for the others, well, let them eat crudite.

The 1/6 committee has recommended charging Trump with 4 various bits of naughtiness, and sent their various evidence to the DOJ. It would be awkward for the DOJ to not do so, anyway. Several other folks were singled out to be dinged, and it's all supposed to be on line somewhere that Trumps accomplices in the House can't eliminate or cover it up in a few days. So there's that.

Otherwise, looks like he's been held in contempt over a few subpoenas he's ignored (to trivial penalties). And since his whole NFT gig reeks of money laundering and an attempt to do an end run around the New York imposed special master, we can expect some rather less than optional requests to provide records on that front soon. So it's not like the special prosecutor who's very visibly and quickly running his investigation is Trump's only worry. Even if it may be the one most likely to get him imprisoned or killed (polonium tea, 8 story defenestration, slippery stairs or ramp, that sort of thing).

Well the horrible little man is slowly turning into a has-been, unfortunately the MAGA nuttery is still free-floating and will probably find a new avatar in Ron DeSantis (ugh).

I'm hoping Merrick Garland doesn't chicken out of pressing charges on Trump but at this point, pessimism has been hammered into me, so I'm not holding my breath. There's still room for him to wriggle out of consequences. For one thing, where would you find a jury to try this guy? And then there's the Supreme Court. I dunno if there's five of them who subscribe to the "If The President Does It, It's Not Illegal" school of executive privilege but I wouldn't be surprised if there were.
