A bit of amusement, at least for me: there's a judge down in Washington who is sentencing January 6th rioters to longer sentences than the prosecutors are asking for. Now as it happens, when Trump filed his latest frivolous lawsuit over executive privilege and document release (in his endless bid to slow down the 1/6 commission until the traitors can retake the House in 2023 and kill the commission), his suit wound up in that judge's inbox. This probably will be a fascinating display of how much the judiciary can actually clear up the works if they are so inclined.

It's been noted that the New York State AG just convinced Trump to run for reelection: by announcing that her civil investigation has determined that there's proof he's committed tax, bank and wire fraud (which she's shared with the SDNY folks doing a criminal investigation). He's looking to hide from the law in the White House again, and in the mean time lie that it's all a witch hunt against a candidate etc.

I suppose that the DA down in Georgia, who's looking into Trumps election fraud, having asked for a grand jury didn't help, as did all the Supremes but Thomas refusing to keep his records from his coup hidden from Congress. Lots of billable hours for Trump to stiff his lawyers for (but that's ok, because the RNC is covering this).

Not quite him: but it amuses me that Melania tried to sell off some of her stuff from her first lady days, and insisted on cybercurrency; but the quarter million dollar bid for her hat was only worth about 170 thousand by the time she was forced to accept it. The sight of a grifter who insists on grift bucks, and gets burned by it, just doesn't fill me with sorrow.

Trump's old accounting firm, Mazars, basically just publicly told him that he's toast. In non-lawyer terms, they've announced that ten years worth of his company's financial statements were garbage because Trump's numbers were falsified; and that they're cooperating with the various prosecutors in New York that are gunning for him. The banks who 'believed' those valuations and used them as the basis for loans? They could now easily call them or force renegotiation of terms.

It's going to be interesting to see what he tries next in order to distract and intimidate his way out of this. At least I suspect it will be.

The first shoe has dropped from the Mazars filing: some of the Democrats on the House Oversight Committee have asked the GSA to cancel Trump's lease on his DC hotel. Apparently there's a clause where lying about your company's net worth is grounds to cancel the lease. Oops.

What makes it more interesting is the $375 million Trump was looking to collect for that lease (which is $100 million over market); it's going to prove tricky to sell the lease if the GSA even starts to look into that little problem. Which would keep Trump from laundering one last massive bribe through the place, and seriously complicate his already large cash flow problems. Oh, well.

Well, this isn't good. The lead prosecutors on Trump's case have resigned, after one reportedly saying he has doubts about pursuing a case against Trump.

...sounds like he's copying out of Zuma's book, then. Which contains gems like "you can't be found guilty if the charges are never prosecuted".

Especially if you can put one of your buddies in the prosecutor's seat. Sounds like the two who retired did so because their new boss wants to let Trump off the hook for reasons that have nothing to do with the merits of the case. Something makes me suspect that new guy isn't a never-Trump Republican...

Quite.

For Zuma, the "buddy in the prosecutor's seat" was Shaun Abrahams, also known as "Shaun The Sheep" in the media. He was the National Director of Public Prosecutions for three years, during which neither he nor his staff prosecuted Zuma at all; eventually, he was removed after a legal challenge had been made, and a full bunch of high-court judges found that he had been illegally appointed. Moreover, the same judges found that the then-President, Jacob Zuma, had a conflict of interest and thus should not be the one to choose Shaun's successor.

There were appeals and so forth, which tied the whole thing up for about another nine months; by the time Shaun was forced out by a court order, the President was Cyril Ramaphosa; he appointed someone else (in 2018) and, like magic, the National Prosecuting Authority was suddenly willing to prosecute Jacob Zuma. (Who then had to resort to other means of delay instead)

I am going to assume that something similar is going to play out with Trump.

The US Justice Department has just announced that it's going after the assets of the Russian oligarchs here in the US. Given how overwhelmingly much of that money is in Republican hands (with a particular emphasis on Trump); even if they don't spare the occasional Democrat who's taken such funding it's going to be extremely interesting to watch. Though since such laws tend to be written 'seize first, care what any judge might think of it 19th'; most of those assets will probably be in Federal hands while the screaming and crying plays out.

Apparently you can unendorse a candidate. Anyway, Trump just did; and in such a way as to underline that he's doing it in an effort to deflect attention from the fact that his endorsement was worthless in the first place. Looks like he husbands his political capital the same way he handles the economic kind.

And the man he unendorsed has publicly noted that Trump was openly trying to commit a coup d'etat long after January 6. I think the technical term is 'blowback'.

There's a 7.5 hour gap in the White House phone logs on 1/6/21, spanning the time of all of the most overt naughtiness that day. I wonder how many times you'd have to play Alice's Restaurant to fill that?

The judge involved in the civil investigation in New York has held Trump in contempt, and fined him $10,000 a day until he turns over the records he's refusing to turn over. Which is pin money, but one supposes the judge will eventually get serious and up the ante considerably when Trump continues to ignore him. We shall see.

And in rather less than two days, the appeals court that Trump tried to hide behind told Trump to pound sand. This is not how abusing the legal system to run out the clock is supposed to work, or at least not from what I hear.
