My family and I have been watching a DVD with a number of Ray Bradbury stories made into short TV episodes. Some were quite good, others were pretty so-so, but Gotcha! just left us wondering what that was all about.

Again, spoilers abound! It starts off as a love story, then after a while she invites him to play a game of Gotcha! in a seedy hotel ("It'll scare the hell out of you"). He drinks the champagne; I'm not sure if she does too. Then the candles and white sheets come out, and he's instructed to lie there without making a sound until the timer goes off after 30 minutes. Then she slides under the bed like she's been deboned, and it begins.

At first, not much happens. After a while he starts getting jumpy, and creepy things start happening. Finally, at the last, when there's only a minute remaining, the timer starts spinning backwards, and her rotting corpse drops off the ceiling and siezes him by the throat. Cue horrified screaming from him. Then the timer dings, and she's back to normal saying "Gotcha!"

But he's shellshocked forever after that point (or so it gives the impression). And then the episode ends. My question is, can someone please explain to me what the point of the story was supposed to be? Beware of Laurel and Hardy fans?

Maybe she decided that if he's growing tired of laughing, she'll make him scream a lot (was there a hallucinogenic in the champagne, I wonder?) If someone has read the written story, did it have a more satisfying explanation than there was in the short TV episode?
