Europe Frozen

Ok, I've been thinking about starting this post for a while, especially after the last few weeks up here in Maine of enjoying upper 40's low 50's (Farenheit) in January.

But now, after seeing this article in which they brought the Penguins inside cause of the cold (PENGUINS!), I've decided to act.

Has anybody else's weather been really....odd... lately? I mean, we've been about 20 degrees above normal here in Maine for the last few weeks. It snowed yesterday (about 2 inches) and was 45(F) today.

And it's freezing in Europe. This is just too much for me. My Boyfriend is of the opinion that the Maw Of Hell has opened somewhere nearby us, but that's just him.

well here in NY (not the city) we have had 50 one day then like 22 the next with 4 inches of snow and the reverse or a week of 50s-60s then a few days of nothing above freezing so... huh, weather is just strange currently.

("day after tomorrow" much?)

Well, in Central Indiana, it hit the fifties a couple of days ago. We played frisbee. (Umm, for all of you Sluggites not from the US, Indiana is towards the center of the continent, and therefore should be pretty decently cold in January.)

It's been unusually warm here in Calgary, Alberta. I don't pay attention to the specific numbers, but I haven't had to use more than a light windbreaker, as opposed to the heavy jacket, gloves, and toque I typically wear in winter.

It was almost 60 here in MA a couple of days ago, but that's not TOO weird.

Feh, I'm from Philadelphia (basically the same climate as NY), and I was raised on completely unpredictable, inexplicable weather. I half expect to have a heat wave in February followed by a blizzard in March.

So... yeah, it's been strange, but for me, that's normal.

SC, that happened *twice* last week. It reached one degree below record highs.

Also, last year....there were massive snowstorms every week and it hardly got above 20.

This year it's hardly gotten below 30 during the day.

It *is* totally bizarre. It's even been possible to walk on the bike path most of the time.

(Since I remember you were very close to me on the 'Sluggite map' thing, I assume you know what the bike path is.)

Here in Washington, I believe we just beat the record for days of continuous rain in a row. Or, as we call it, January.

Normally, we have next to no rain all winter and then catch up in about a month or two. Usually December, but sometimes a bit later.

This summer, the rain in December was pretty low but there's been a lot of rain so far in January.

Apparently, it's causing problems for farmers - first it's too dry to grow anything, now the land is too wet to plant wheat.

So yes, a little bit unseasonal... but not dramatically so. We certainly haven't been stinted on rain (the dams are mostly pretty full and a few are over-full), even if it started a little later than usual.

Pittsburgh-ish has been unusually warm and not-white lately.

And today, we had a thunderstorm, complete with thunder, lightning, rain, and... SNOW?

Some places around here got 2 inches of SNOW during tonight's thunderstorm. There were more flakes than raindrops sticking to my window!

I thought that was scientifically impossible --having snow during a thunderstorm. It was WEIRD.

Eastern NC's weather has been bouncing around like a superball in a tile bathroom. 60 degrees and sunny, 70 degrees and sunny, 38 degrees and rainy, 30 degrees and sunny and WINDY, 45 degrees and thundering, etc., etc...

Even worse, that's a normal winter for us. Don't like the weather? Wait half a day and it'll change.

It's been rather warm down here in florida, for january anyway. We have a cool front blowing in tomorrow. I say blowing in because of the 20mph winds expected throught the day. The low is 53 and the high is 71. That means jeans tomorrow, perhaps a jacket if I go out at night.
