Goofy is a dog. Before he was "Goofy", he was a character named "Droopy Dog". If he's not a dog, something's weird.

How is reality TV interesting at all? How in the hell could American Idol be that riveting?

There's no accounting for taste. Or if you want to sound edumacated: de gustibus non est disputandum.

A friend of mine noted with Big Brother (a popular RTV show here) that Big Brother, when it's on, is on every night except saturday. If you're willing to be immersed by it, you have a perpetual topic of discussion. No matter how often you see your friends, you'll always be able to talk about what happenned on Big Brother last night. Hell, you can even tap into the webcast, if you really can't get enough of them.

Also, watching such shows does require you to watch everything. What little narrative exists in these shows is created day-by-day by the producers, and consistently missing bits of the weekly broadcast is likely to leave you horribly misinformed.

As for Idol... Part of it is being able to complain about the competition and barrack for the guy you prefer. Also, Idol gives people an excuse to critique the Idol's music. Finally, the Judges (if you have at least one evil one) can be quite amusing.

One thing you must remember that most Reality television shows don't have a true, focused narrative. If you're able to happily discard the requirement for a carefully constructed narrative, and attach yourself to the narratives-in-progress that are being hastily constructed by the producers (or by the format of the show, in the case of Idol and The Mole), Reality TV is actually quite watchable. But you really do have to watch the whole thing.

And in the case of MTV's reality shows, you have to care about incredibly pretty but incredibly shallow people and their interactions with one another when forced to spend ALL their time together.
