The most notable hydrogen explosion in history is the Hindenburg.

However, I have a few things to say in defense of the nutjobs that got on a giant explody balloon.

For some reason, the folk who built the Hindenburg decided to give it a skin imbued with iron oxide and aluminum. They felt, I believe, that this would lessen the chance of fire in the skin. I don't know why they felt this. But they wanted to avoid a hydrogen explosion. That wish was sensible.

The materials they chose were not sensible.

It takes a great deal of heat for iron oxide to oxidize aluminum. We're talking molten metals temperatures. But once you get the reaction going, whew DOGGY, it ain't gonna stop. It produces molten iron and temperatures in excess of 2500 degrees celsius. That's like trying to fly a balloon made out of an angry star.

Suffice it to say, that it took just one mistake (a dangling iron line) to get the Hindenburg going, but the fact that they put an explodey gas in a skin of angry evil hateful burny heat ... I'm guessing they hadn't lit up a pile of rust and aluminum to see what happened.

And so, the world has yet to experience a golden age of silent aircraft.

I don't know if I'd get on a dirigible, but I think it'd be awesome to see one.

You mean, we could've had commercially viable blimp travel if it weren't for one really stupid mistake?

I want my Blimp Airways!

I was under the impression that the coating was to make it shiny (so that it would be visible at night), rather than being anything to do with fire.

the history channel thing said that the USA cut off the supply of helium that why it had hydrogen.

And texas only joined the United States because we ran out of money. Something about too many guns or something.

Q: Socialism and communism? is socialism just watered down communism?

Isn't socialism advocacy of large, powerful government that's actually useful and beneficial to people and society?

Whereas true communism would be the breakdown of hierarchical society, lack of meritocracy altogether, no true possession, everyone working equally to live off the land in communities where everyone is truly equal?

Somebody who actually read Karl Marx, please correct me.

Socialism is essentially the concept that cooperation for the common good in industry and economics is the best approach. Communism is one strongly authoritarian branch of socialism, but there are other political ideologies which are socialist but are in other ways very much opposed to communist thought. Anarcho-syndicalism, for example, is socially very libertarian and highly opposed to the oppressive authoritarianism of communism, but it is nonetheless a form of socialism.
