I thought this lil expose by Slate would interest the scientifically minded on the boards. Basically, lab mice are too sedentary and are fed too much. They are way overweight, and their pudginess may be having a serious effect on drug testing. That's some serious ooohhhh, Crap! right there.

I dunno, if we're testing drugs for Americans, sedentary, overweight mice are probably about right.

CORRECTION!

Sorry, I posted this before I read the entire article.

Basically, it isn't just fat mice. It's that science may be relying WAY too much on mice and rats for all of its testing needs. Mice and rats don't respond to drugs the same way as humans in all cases, but research has narrowed to the point where they are the largest set of animals used in testing. This bottleneck may have stunted medical research, leaving us stagnant for the last two to three decades.

If the mice spent more time outside playing, and less time on the couch with Call of Duty then it wouldn't be a problem.

Well, to be fair, we've made some astonishing advances in medical treatment of mice.
