Now obviously, I didn't grok the entire article but I do know (thanks mostly to Waffle) that challenges to the Standard Model from experimental evidence are a big deal. This reminds me of the particles that went faster than light a few months ago. A few more results like this could indicate we are living in interesting times for particle physicists.

Who are the other Physicists on the board? I know there are at least a couple... I'd be interested in your take

The FTL particles turned out to be a measurement error. Basically, no one accounted for the rotation of the Earth.

Haha really? That's good to know. It reminds me of the kind of mistakes I would make all the time back in school. This result probably won't lead to anything either but I figured I'd post it and put my money where my ("There aren't enough new threads in GC") mouth is.

Is that what it was? I did wonder but hadn't heard.

Ditto. I had a feeling it was something like this when I didn't hear about it again.

Are you sure about that? I hadn't heard anything to that effect and these articles (dated today) suggest that the matter is still unresolved.

Yeah, Axel, I'm pretty sure. This paper proscribes that it's basically inevitable measurement error caused by our frames of reference. The error the author calculates is too close to the real error to be coincidental. But scientists don't like being wrong, so of course the folks running the experiment are still looking for confirmation.

Eh, I'm not certain that that particular explanation is correct, FB. Certainly not sure enough to call it case closed - but it's quite likely a component of the answer, perhaps the dominant component.

And I wouldn't say these particular scientists hate to be wrong. A large part of their original press release was along the lines of "Can someone check if we've made a mistake here please?"

Where's the Waffle Signal? We can't expect Waffle to turn up if we don't activate the Waffle Signal, now can we?
