Anyone here played God of War?
Imagine that kind of game, but you play as Oasis.

Well, I have some ideas that I think would make Malice's idea a little better. Personally, I'd do away with the facing sides thing and the drawing panels thing.
Instead, you'd have the entire run of panels generated at the start of the game. This run of panels would consist of 2 dozen or so storylines, the exact content of which would be randomised, to a point. The order of those storylines would also be randomised.
At the start, you'd just have, say, Torg. You'd then pretty much fight and handle dialogue through the line of panels. As you progress you'd face various events, which could be meeting characters (who will then aid Torg and each other), meeting enemies who you have to beat, finding items (Chaz, Sasha's remote, the book of E-ville, silver plating kit), gaining abilities (swordsmanship, vampirism, angst)... and so forth.
At some story events you might need to split the assembled characters up, such as when Riff sends Torg to the Dimension of Pain. Instead, in the game, you could decide to send Torg there along with Chaz, Sasha's remote and Oasis. Or maybe it's Holiday Overlord Bun-Bun, Gwynn and Zoe who get sent to the past.
Anyway, when something like this happens, instead of just one strip of panels, you'd get two parallel strips of panels, where the panels progress at the same rate. So you'd basically set the actions of all of your characters, whether it is attacking with Chaz, using Sasha's remote or saying a line of dialogue. You'd see the results and the strip would advance to the next panel. Future panels could be seen 10 or 20 ahead, in some cases, the character might have to recover for a panel or two before completing a second action.
When the alternate thread completes you'd have them merge again with the characters meeting up again.
Well those are my ideas. Kinda changes the game to a sort of RPG instead of an RTS, but I think Sluggy would be better as an RPG anyway. My ideas probably make this thing way too ambitious once again, but I still like my idea better :P

YES!!! I love that game and can't wait for a sequel. And it would be awesome to play as Oasis, or even BunBun(power him up to Holiday Bun). It is way too ambitious, though I can dream about it.

Years ago, on this very board, I attempted to spearhead production of both a Sluggy Fighting Game and a short Sluggy RPG. Both were spectacular failures after about a week of really promising creative discussion and even a promotional image or two.
Best of luck, though.

A sluggy RPG would be good...
I think someone with RPG maker and a butt-load of free time needs to look into making something like this...It could turn out to be really good...

The following are links to screen captures of a 2-d sluggy game i've been working on.

<a href="http://s166.photobucket.com/albums/u108/abysswanderer/?action=view¤t=sluggygame2.gif" target="_blank"><img>sluggy game pic 2</a>
I've been working on this for some time and am still not very far. However, what you see are actual screenshots from a "playable" build. All you can do at the moment is move around, jump, and shoot the alies.
If you wonder why some of the alies are in the air it's because they're dropping from a spawner. The spawner and the dropping alies only exist so i can test timing related issues with the gun, bullets etc and the alie sprite movement. It's far easier to have them constantly spawn than to reload the game.
I've read enough posts about a sluggy game on the boards to know I need pete's permission before i can release it for open dl. I also read that in order to get that permission i need a proof of concept demo which is what i'm working on. Originally it was going to be one stage filled with a variety of powerups just to demonstrate what I had in mind. However somewhere along the way this evolved into a plan for 2 stages and a boss.(there has to be enough game to demonstrate some of the nifty powerups)
If Pete approves it, the powerups will be scattered through multiple levels instead of all being available right away. Other than the powerups and touching up graphics the 2 stages and the boss fight will remain much the same and will be released as an episode 1 arc. So if the proof of concept is approved I should have it ready for sluggites to dl fairly soon after. Of course theres a lot between now and that.
Granted in theory a mini game could be released now since their are things to shoot at and a working score but other than having riff and a scifi adventure alie it wouldn't be very sluggy freelance related.
Anyway the reason I went ahead and posted is because my conscience is nagging at me a bit. You might have noticed that the Riff sprite looks familiar. It's actually the riff sprite from the sluggyfighters yfighters mod that mea_v4 created. Yahoo got rid of yfighters but mea_v4 released the sprites with a readme stating that the sprites were for anyone who needed sluggy quatrix sprites. Which i took to mean it was ok for me to use(i have every intention of crediting her). However I have e-mailed the only e-mail address she lists on her site in an attempt to get direct permission to no avail. It seems she no longer checks it. So if any of you sluggites know how to get a hold of her, have her message me on the boards or check her mea_v4 e-mail.
The alie sprite is a sprite edit I did based of the sci fi adventure. There's reason for it story wise in the game. I'm no artist but I think it turned out ok. Hopefully though I won't have to redo the riff sprite because i can't get a hold of mea. I don't think I could do it justice. I do intend to do some editing on her character sprites before final release but honestly I can't improve much on what she's already done as again I'm no artist.
I'm keeping the game story details mostly to myself at this point but there is a story as close to the sluggy style as I dare attempt and i think everyone will enjoy it.
I'll post updates periodically on the progress if anyones interested.

That looks interesting, abysswanderer. What are you making the game in?

I would really like to see a jum'n'run game, samething like Commander Keen - Only with Bun-bun instead of Keen, telemarketers instead of aliens, siwtchblade and GLOCK instead of raygun and Baywatch-tapes and centerfolds insead of teddy-bears...

abysswanderer wrote: So.... On a dead topic I just thought I'd post this. http://games.digitalabyss.net/sluggytest.mp4It's "playable" but i'd not dare upload it without Pete's permission. I can't imagine he would complain, if that's all there is to it. As long as you don't try to monetize it, use it to harvest user data, or have super creepy fanfic art. lolz.
