No it's true, the moon is dark. It has an albedo similar to wet soil and worn asphalt. The full moon looks bright compared to the blackness between the stars, but it actually reflects very little of the incoming sunlight.
By the way, isn't it rather weird that displaying one's backside is called "mooning" when we only ever see the moon's front side?
