I think the joke here was supposed to be along the lines of cross-referencing the old "cabbage patch" tale with the idea of "alien pod people." I agree it needed to be brought out more strongly. But, Pete is at a convention, so it was probably done in a hurry. They can't all be gems.

I got the joke – so it wasn’t completely wasted. Not the funniest, but better than nothing which is really all you can ask from filler.
