Felix shrugs.

"Think of it this way. Ivan feels like he needs to go out and do some stuff on his own for a while before he's ready to come back. He has his own reasons for wanting to do this. Reasons you might not understand, but that he feels deeply about nonetheless. He'll return when he accomplishes what he has set out to do and we will endure to make sure he remains in fine condition until such time."

The Count continues to look confused. "Well... I hope that you will return, then, when you're ready, Ivan."

Straight faced, Arkady says: "I think he will. But now i think it is time to bury your sister?"

Felix idly wonders if Ivan's magic resistance shielded them from temporal shenanigans.

"Oh, yes. When young Piper turned up a couple of days back, and passed on your request to delay the funeral two more days so that you could attend, we were all terribly surprised..."

Young Piper looks suspiciously innocent.

Arkady nods. "She can be a surprising girl, yes. And thank you for the delay.

Privately Arkady is thinking that bilocation was a much more elegant solution than warping time, but there's no way he'd come right out and say that right now.

And so the Count leads the small Terran delegation out to his family graveyard. It turns out that the local Elene priest (a small, inoffensive, and - to be honest - fairly unmemorable fellow) is already present (it seems that Piper was fairly exact about what time you would be arriving) and the funeral proceeds in a mostly calm and unsurprising manner. There is the chance to verify that the Countess' body is, in fact, in the coffin, and you can all watch as it is very certainly buried, with all suitable funerary rites.

(Is there anything anyone would like to do during the funeral, or shall we skip to after it?)

Other than trying to get a read on the folks present (if any, besides the party, the count and the priest), Arkady makes mental notes of the service for later consideration and then goes off to whatever comes next.

Felix will pay his respects but otherwise follow Arkady's lead.

There isn't anyone else - Arkady gets the impression that the Countess wasn't quite all that well-liked towards the end.

The priest goes through the service competently enough, but listening between the lines, Arkady gets the very strong impression that he's deliberately phrasing the rites in such a way as to say, more or less, "may she get what she deserves" as he commends her soul to the Elene God.

Piper plays a brief piece of music; it's set in a suitably sombre key (which the Count seems to approve of) but Arkady gets the strong impression that the tune in question is the result of transcribing "Ding Dong, The Witch Is Dead" into said minor key.

Before long, the Priest heads off (presumably back to his chapel) and the Count invites you into his Castle, where you can discuss anything you'd like with him.

As they walk back to the castle, Arkady looks over at Piper. "She's gone where the goblins go?"

He suspects Felix has more he wants to accomplish with the count; he'll just inquire if the count ever got around to rereading Arkady's story about how the Terrans got there, in case the subject of frozen Terrans comes up again. And whether the Count has any questions, of course.

Piper makes no reply, until such time as Arkady repeats the question in Elene, when she gives him a glance and says "She's nowhere near that lucky."

The Count has, indeed, gone through the story again, and has any number of questions. Few of them involve sensitive information, but in sheer quantity it is very quickly obvious that he will continue to have more questions indefinitely into the future; if you have a spare decade or two to answer them, well, the Count is unlikely to object to the idea. None of the questions appear particularly urgent or immediate.

It's probably a touchy subject still yet with Ivan refusing to talk and the Count's sister recently buried, so Felix will explore social etiquette until he thinks it's appropriate to bring up matters of business.

After that he'll discuss with the Count the matters of bringing in some Terran workers to assist around the castle, facilitate language and knowledge exchanges using the Count's libraries and Terran data banks, and use byproducts of the logging processes in the village to develop a small paper mill to manufacture more of the good stuff the Count liked. Hopefully for the profit of both parties and the peoples of all involved.

Maybe they could even work on widening the road. Felix has experienced many harrowing adventures since arriving, but navigating that road is certainly one of the scariest.

It takes a little time, but eventually the conversation turns to more business-like pursuits.

The Count himself is eager to work with Terrans, particularly Terrans who know the secrets of Terran bookbinding. The major constraint is one that the Terrans are already intimately familiar with - food supplies. It's not that the Count's village is particularly short, or liable to run out at any point in the near future... but it is that just about all the arable land in the vicinity is already being farmed. The Count is not certain that he can take in more than about three Terrans without putting undue strain on his village's food production capabilities.

He would, however, be quite eager to have the road improved. The main reason why it hasn't been improved yet is that the local people do not have any good techniques for handling certain poorly placed rock outcroppings, and are unwilling to take the time to fell a few particularly large and inconveniently placed trees; nothing that a well-equipped modern road construction crew couldn't handle. He's also hopeful that easier travel to and from his village will help the villagers become less insular and less distrustful of all things foriegn.

Felix will hail David over the radio and work to put together a three person team that meets the requirements listed. Someone who can help the Count maintain his estate. Someone familiar with paper and book manufacturing processes. Someone who can do construction work with a focus on road development. It would be best if there was some skill overlap between the three so they could work as group.

In addition to paper making and book binding there should also be some basic scripts for farming and medical advice that could be spread through to help the populace. Possibly something with pictures over words for the less literate.
