Things are mostly quietening down. With the siege gone and Raven arrested, there's a generally celebratory mood about the area. Ortzel's complete elevation to Arch-Prelacy is covered in ancient customs, rituals, and ceremonies; about half of which are an excuse for everyone in the city (except the Patriarchs and other priestly types, and the Church Knights keeping a lookout on the walls) to get roaring drunk and toast the health of the new Arch-Prelate.

In a quiet moment amidst the celebrations, and congratulations, the Terrans find themselves all gathering in Dolmant's estate, and the conversation turns to the question - what should they do next?

Arkady idly wonders if the locals have invented distillation. "I am thinking we should be getting rid of the tithe now. The new arch-prelate may be finding the money useful. Perhaps Dolmant knows who we should be speaking to?"

If Dolmant or Vanire happen to be around, he asks if they've got a minute for a question about protocol.

"We've got to turn it over at some point. Sooner rather than later seems to be better," Felix says. "At any rate, now that things have settled down I'd rather like to get a chance to speak to Ortzel. See if there's a way we can arrange a mutually beneficial relationship between the Elene Church and the colony. If we can get shipments of food arranged in exchange for services somehow that would be pretty great. After that I want to head back to the colony and see to it's defenses."

The Terrans manage to catch Dolmant between two ceremonies. It turns out that there is a specific monk in charge of the Church treasury, and Dolmant will gladly take you to see him personally this evening; moreover, given the size of the donation you'll be making to Church funds, it'll be very straightforward to arrange a meeting between you and the new ArchPrelate.

Arkady thanks Dolmant for his help. "We should be paying our respects to the new Arch Prelate before we go home. I wonder if he is thinking of putting a special tax on Zemoch gold?"

"I think that would more require admission of guilt than would be readily forthcoming, but I anticipate some anonymous donations in the coming weeks," Felix says.

If nothing else occurs, Felix settles down in the bed of the truck (the one with all the gold) or otherwise nearby and nods off into a light doze until it's time to donate it all. Theresa will grab her own spot nearby and they'll be keeping their guns on hand.

Dolmant gives Arkady a half-smile. "I'm sure he'd love to. But if you just see a bar of gold, then there's really no way of telling where it came from. Unless you have some way of doing so?"

Arkady looks thoughtful for a second. "Perhaps. Gold from different sources has different impurities, and we know how to test for those. Of course if it really is being cursed then it's much easier; a competent mage or maybe anyone who is sensitive to magic could tell you."

Felix and Theresa remain on standby at the truck for the time being.

Roger takes the opportunity to rest for a while. When he gets bored with that, he'll leaf through whatever books Dolmant happens to have handy.

"After so long completely denying that magic exists, it's going to be hard to persuade the Church to hire a mage - and harder still to find one willing to work for us. These 'impurities' would be by far the better way, politically. Pardon me, but there's a ceremony I really should be getting ready for - we'll talk further this evening."

Dolmant changes his clothes and hurries out, and nothing much happens through the rest of the day until evening. Roger finds a book that's a fairly in-depth exploration of some seriously difficult questions in ethics; Felix and Theresa manage to have a quiet nap, and Arkady is left to contemplate the question of how to be sure that one tests all the gold that a Patriarch owns (as opposed to all the gold that that Patriarch is willing to admit to owning).

Nothing much happens until Dolmant returns in the evening, and everyone feels the rest doing them good.

All FATE points are refreshed at this point.

Eventually, however, Dolmant does return, ready and prepared to lead the group to the monk in charge of the Church treasury.

Felix double and triple checks to make sure all the gold they brought with them is still in place and none has been pilfered. He also tries the radio to see if he can get any response in from the ship. See if anything is happening on that end, if possible.

He makes note that Piper hasn't been around but he keeps catching maybe-glimpses in his peripheral vision. He understood that she wanted to be mysterious... and keep her secrets, besides. He'll smile whenever he thinks he sees her.

Then he gets ready to head for the treasury.

"What can we expect when we get there?" Felix asks Dolmant.

Arkady has an idea or two about finding out just how much gold a patriarch might have, but for now all he asks is "What is the honorific for the Arch-Prelate?"

Felix: Alertness: +2 Theresa: +4 Roll: -1 Total: +5

Felix is pretty sure that the gold is all there. It doesn't look like any of it has been pilfered, at least.

He can also get a response from the Ship, from which he hears that apparently Zalasbra has yielded to gentle social pressure enough to agree to teach one Terran some of the basic tenets of magic - though he hasn't yet selected exactly which Terran (and no-one else on the Ship is quite clear what his exact criteria are, but they apparently involve a lot of time spent in silent meditation, communing with his god).

"You can expect to meet a monk with no detectable sense of humour known as Brother Wale," explains Dolmant. "He's an extremely thin fellow who always seems to be counting up the value of everything. Along with a couple of other monks and a small selection of Church knights to act as guardians, they will take the gold and then move it into the Church's treasuries. There's no real particular ceremony to that part. Then, you will be granted an audience with the Arch-Prelate, whose honorific, incidentally, is 'Your Holiness'. Since you are, uh, not members of the Elene Church, there's a lot of customs and traditions that you are not expected to partake in; basically, remain peaceful and treat the Arch-Prelate respectfully, and you'll be fine."

Felix nods.

"Seems perfectly manageable," Felix says. "I'm good to go if everyone else is."

Felix's eyes spark with the intensity of his interest in the news he receives from the ship. Finally, a possible chance at figuring out how all this magic stuff works! The desire to sink his teeth into new knowledge almost makes him salivate and he has to strain to tamp down on the urge to head straight for the ship right now to see what all the fuss is about.

Later. There are important matters to attend to here, now, at the Basilica. Curiosity can kill Felix later. The survival of the colony depends on mutually beneficial relations with the locals.
