Something about that accent...shrugging, the Drow advances to the doorway with his sword point down. He takes in the dwarf with the stone, wonders why he half feels like he expected that, and asks "Isn't it rather dark down there?"

A flashlight? That's all? That's not a director, so... the whole 'kidnapper' business comes to the fore again.

Worryingly, so does the 'sadistic kidnapper with a series of deathtraps' hypothesis. In which case this would be bait. But a torch will be useful...

The human steps forward, grabs the torch and switches it off in one easy motion, and immediately backs a few steps away again.

The Dwarf doesn't really know what to make of The Drow, but he lowers his arm, for the moment.

"Oh aye, zurr. Oi was a bit careless burr aye. Woke up an' no memories. Work of an evil sorceror no doubt..." He trails off. He's noticed the sword and tenses up again. Then he glances back and forth between the weapon and the Drow's eyes.

The Drow looks at him for a second. "I don't remember a great deal either. Hmm. Is the creature down there stuck, or do we need to be guarding that trap door? I found a lamp, but it's going to take a bit of work to light it."

"Good."

The Drow sheathes the sword, puts his stuff down on the bar, and starts to maintain the pistol. "I found this out there. I can light a fire with it, but first I want to be sure it won't break when I pull the trigger." As he sets up he looks at the Dwarf. "Forgive my manners, but I don't seem to remember my name. Please call me...Wright."

While the Dwarf and the Drow chat, scratching noises can be heard intermittently at the trapdoor. The Creature still seems to be trying to get through, but as yet is unable to do so.

The Human approaches the flashlight and moves to grab it. As his hand closes around the cold metal it's constructed from, the light from his candle pushes away some of the fog surrounding the area immediately around the flashlight.

Laying on the ground just beyond the flashlight is the frozen corpse of a man in a dark blue uniform. Heavy frost covers the body and the outstretched hand that the flashlight must have fallen from.

The Human is Freezing. Fog Obscures his surroundings.

The Dwarf nods. He steps away from the door, to ensure that the creature will not be able to escape. Then returns to examine the chest he saw earlier to see if he can open it.

The human backs away rather more rapidly than he had planned to. Then he turns, and, keeping his candle lit, runs back towards the nice, warm, fog-free house he was in a few minutes ago.

The Drow finds a place to sit down and work on the flintlock pistol for a bit. The kitchen is in complete disarray so the two closest places are on the writing desk in the bedroom (rather cramped if he and the Dwarf are both going to be in there) or the bar out in front of the kitchen. Regardless of where he sits, he finds all he needs to work on the weapon inside the kit he found.

Engineering: +3, Roll: +1, Total: +4.

It's a well built firearm and the design isn't especially complex. You figure with an afternoon of poking and prodding to make sure all the bits are structurally sound enough to withstand internal combustion and a bit of cleaning you should be able to get it up to working order no problem. But you don't really need it to shoot for the moment, you want it to create some sparks so you can light the occasional fire. Fortunately for you the flint striker is in serviceable condition and after a few minutes of fiddling to get all the parts back in place it's in fine working order.

The Drow now has a flintlock dueling pistol (empty, for the moment) that he can use to create sparks for fire starting.

The Dwarf leaves the Drow to his business and goes to the bedroom to examine the chest. It's big, heavy, and sturdy looking. The Dwarf tries to open it up but it's locked shut. He'll probably need a key to open it. Or something to pry it open.

The Drow and the Dwarf are both chilly, and a Light Haze filters into the tavern from outside.

The Human beats a hasty, presumably panicked, retreat back the way he came. The fog is thick and obscures his vision but between the short distance, straight line, and the light of the candle, the Human is able to make his way back to the street and inside the house without much difficulty.

Alertness: +2, Roll: -1, Total: +1.

The door is still unlocked as he left it and the slight but ever welcoming fire in the hearth crackles warmly.

The Human is comfortable. The area inside the house is Clear.

The Drow heads over to the fireplace he saw and uses some of the cloth and wood he gathered to construct a nest and a suitable supply of kindling. Then he puts one of the charred lamp wicks he found in the pan with a couple of grains of gunpowder, fully cocks the hammer, and pulls the trigger.

What he should then have is a somewhere between smouldering and lit bit of wick. He tips that into the shredded linen nest, blows it into a flame, and lights a fire with it. A couple of minutes later he should have a decent little fire going; with that done he takes a burning splinter to light his lamp. With that in hand he goes back into the office, looks at the other lamp, and goes to examine it.

The Dwarf begins to turn the bedroom upside down looking for the key to the chest. If there is spare lamp besides the one the Drow just picked up, he'll light that to aid his search.

The Human closes and bars the door, and then leans against it, breathing heavily.

If anyone asks, he is not panicked. He will insist that he was not panicked. It was probably just a prop or something, anyway.

...but that bar is staying on the door, for the moment.

For reason which the Human will insist are sensible caution, and not panicked fear.

The Drow tries to get a fire going in the tavern's hearth.

Survival: +3, Roll: -4, Total: -1.

Unfortunately he just doesn't have much luck getting things going. The gunpowder is old and everything is just too damp from spending time out in the weather. He can't get any of the sparks from the flint to catch properly enough to get a fire going.

He goes to check out the lamp in the bedroom. It's a sturdy looking thing. In good condition. Its handle rests on a hook by the door so it can be easily grabbed by the occupant if they're in a hurry to be somewhere. A quick check of its contents shows that it only has a few dregs of oil left. It can be lit, but not for long. It'll need to be refilled.

The Dwarf searches about the room. There is no spare lamp to aid his search besides the one the Drow is examining, and even if there was one the Dwarf currently has no means to light one. Despite that setback, he presses on and looks for a key.

Investigation: ?, Roll: -1, Total: -1.

The Dwarf sorts through the room for a bit but has no luck in finding a key of any kind. The room is rather spare. It just seems like a combination bedroom/office. The only things of particular interest are the chest and the bookshelf. The books seem to be mostly inventory and accounting logs for the tavern.

The Human closes the door. The thud of the bolt in the frame sliding into place seems to echo reassuringly through the whole house.

He has his candle, which looks like it'll burn merrily for some hours. He has this heavy flashlight, though the batteries are somewhat weak. He has a small but warm fire crackling heartily in the hearth of the fireplace. The fire will definitely need some wood within the next hour if the Human wants to keep it going.

Things remain much the same for everyone for the moment.

Breathe.

Breathe.

Breathe.

Alright. Matches in pocket. Safe house still safe. And still no internet connection. How does one survive without internet?

...not even a telephone. This must be the set for a period piece. Something truly ancient, practically caveman days.

...no single person could possibly have put a place like this together. That's a heavy piece of evidence in favour of the 'film set' hypothesis. And that means that there's a director's office somewhere. Somewhere which will have a phone...

Leaving the back door closed (and bolted) for what he will insist, if asked, were perfectly sensible reasons, the Human heads out the front door and looks around, keeping his candle on hand. (The torch is turned off, to save battery power). He's looking for the tallest structure in sight; something he can climb on top of and get a good view of the city.
