If nothing jumps out to attack Wright, then Humphrey will slip in after him and poke around the room, looking at the titles of the books and seeing whether they're legible or not.

Rook also enters the room and looks around. He'll keep any eye on the other doors, but won't open them until the group is ready.

Nothing jumps out to attack as the group enters the room. As places go, it's still rather neat and orderly. Nothing out of the ordinary immediately jumps to mind. Given the sorts of things the party has seen before now the ordinariness of the room is itself rather odd. It doesn't look like it's been ransacked at all. Like it's gone without a good dusting for a long while, yes, but no signs of damage or looting.

Humphrey examines the books on the shelves.

Investigation: +2, Roll: +1, Total: +3.

He finds that most of the books are illegible. Like someone deliberately smudged still wet ink after it was applied, running the words together and making them indecipherable. Every book he checks reveals the same. None of them are legible. He's just about to turn away from the shelf when he spots a book he could have sworn wasn't there a moment ago. The title on the spine reads Lost to the Fade.

Rook keeps an eye on the doors. The one to the left stands open and as the group examines the sitting room Rook can see that it leads into a kitchen and dining room. The table only has one chair but it's spacious enough for more. The one remaining chair is of like make to the other chairs that were blocking the entrance outside.

The door to the right is the barest of cracks open. It looks like it could be pushed all the way easily enough.

Since he can see into the kitchen, and because books are of little interest to him, Rook moves into the kitchen on his single minded search for food. He will search the kitchen extensively.

Wright puts down the lamp on something sturdy then opens the last door.

The other books are clearly there for background scenery. Put there to build up a sort of a background for a larp. But this one... Humphrey thinks he must have just missed it the first time he looks. It must have been deliberately inserted... it's probably a Clue.

He takes it from the shelf and starts skimming through it.

Rook goes to search through the kitchen and dining room and finds it much the same as the sitting room. The room is rather neat and tidy compared to anywhere else the group has seen thus far. Nothing seems out of place. The only furniture that's missing is what was presumably used to blockade the section outside the entrance to the living quarters. Behind the dining table there's a large shelf system for holding what appear to be expensive looking wine bottles.

Every single wine bottle is empty.

The kitchen is similarly bereft of all food. There's simply none to be had. There are no suspicious looking stains or detritus of food long since rotted. The food is just gone.

Humphrey opens the book to skim through it and finds the pages blank, except for the very first. On the first page is what appears to be an incomplete map of a city. Three roads lead into the city through different gates to the city center. Three buildings and a depiction of a well reside in the city center. A fourth building sits midway down one of the roads on the way to the city walls. The topmost building in the center and the building on the road are surrounded by a bright golden circle. An ominous looking castle is drawn on the farthest left side of the city.

The rest of the map is vaguely indistinct. Very light pictures of half drawn buildings in vast swathes of dark grey and a large open space near the bottom most gate. The top and bottom gates are depicted as broken. The right most gate is depicted as standing open. A section of wall to the bottom right is depicted as collapsed. Currents of darkness are depicted as flowing in through the gates, the collapsed wall, and out from the castle.

Wright pushes open the last door. It leads to the bedroom of the residential area. A skeleton rests on the floor with its back against the wall, the head angled as though peering through a gap in the planks of a boarded up window next to the body. In the skeleton's lap rests a book, smudged to illegibility like most of the rest. Next to the body lay several empty wine bottles.

"Hey, guys. I found a map." No prizes for guessing what the Clue is, in this book. "It's got a couple of places circled on it. Maybe we should see what's at those places?"

Humphrey doesn't even look up from his book, trying to figure out which two are the circled buildings. He gets the strange idea that perhaps one of them is the house that he left a fire burning in...

Oi am startin' to get the feeling the only food will be found ootside the city, but Oi agree we should check those buildings.

*I should have noted that Rook pocketed the beans.

Wright grins slightly at the sight of the skeleton. A lonely way to die, but apparently a fairly comfortable one. He glances at the book then points to the circled building he and Rook did not come from. "Were you there recently, Humphrey? The other one is the inn we just left."

When that's settled, he's going to search the upstairs. Absent any other finds, there's got to be knives and fire starters in the kitchen; and the lone skeleton probably didn't drink whatever they used as lamp oil (unless it was cooking oil, then maybe they did). Writing supplies, rope, unspoiled textiles, suitable (and perhaps warm) clothing; a well to do merchant's household should have a fair amount to find. Possibly even money, though he's more curious about that than eager; it's not like there's too much to spend on.

"I did explore one down that side somewhere. It might have been that one, but I'm not entirely sure..."

After a few seconds: "Did you leave a fire burning in whichever building you were in?"

"I did. Are you suggesting that whoever wrote this book predicted I would do that?"

Wright shakes his head. "No, what I suspect is that if you build a small fire in the kitchen here then we will see a circle form around this building too."

"What, you think this book somehow reacts to our actions? How does that work?"
