The image very much feels to Humphrey like it's drawn onto paper. It very much seems like just a normal book, with the one singular exception that the map changed when a fire was lit.

Wright and Rook go to search through the store a little bit more to try and find anything useful.

Wright Investigation: +3, Roll: -2, Total: +1.
Rook Investigation: +0, Roll: +0, Total: +0.

Neither of them have much in the way of luck finding anything in the midst of the debris of the store. There's still the stairs leading down into the basement area, however.

Wright shrugs. "Well, we know where we can find firewood. Let's see if the cellar is as bad." Lamp in one hand and sword in the other he heads down. Who knows: the creature across the square may have friends.

It takes Humphrey a while, but eventually he concludes that he isn't going to figure out how the trick was done by investigating the book any further. And it was a trick, he's quite certain of that...

"Well," he eventually says. "The only other place that this map seems to properly show is that castle. Either of you lot been there?"

Wright glances over his shoulder at the human. "There's fog pouring out of the doors of the castle. It did not look promising."

Wright heads down the stairs and arrives at the door leading to the basement. It looks like it was locked shut at one point, but has since been smashed inwards. The door hangs loosely on the frame, partially concealing the basement proper.

Wright Alertness: +4, Roll: +0, Total: +4.

Before Wright goes to push the door open, he hears a faint scratching noise coming from some distance beyond the door.

Wright stops, puts the tip of his sword by the opening (in case something comes charging out), then looks back at Rook and says quietly: "Something is scratching back there."

Rook nods, and follows after Wright, with his stone in hand, poised to strike.

Wright puts the lantern down up the stairs a way then edges the door open and peers in. The body of the door remains between him and the basement, but he can thrust past it with his sword if he needs to. Let's hear it for low light vision.

Wright Stealth: ?, Roll: +0, Total: +0
Creature Alertness: +1, Roll: -4, Total: -3.

Wright approaches the basement door and, as quietly as possibly, nudges the door aside so he can peek in. His eyes pierce the simple darkness well enough and without fog to obscure his vision the room appears to him almost as bright as day.

Wright Investigation: +3, Roll: +1, Total: +4.

The first one is easy enough to spot. A small, squat creature wreathed in living shadow so dense even his eyes have a hard time making any details out beneath. It snuffles about the basement, poking it's nose inside barrels and using it's claws to rake open containers.

A second creature occupies a small hole in the side of the wall where the stone has crumbled over the years. The earth beyond the hole in the stone wall has been dug out into a crude tunnel, and the second creature occupies itself by scratching at the earth and rock to widen the tunnel. Wright notes that the hole is facing somewhat in the direction of the inn, if not precisely pointing at it.

Does it look like they've been rooting around down here for years or somehow just arrived?

The hole in the wall being worked on by the second creature looks pretty recent and a trail through the small layer of dust on the ground by the first creature leads Wright to believe these are somewhat recent occupants.

One more question: how wide is this staircase, and how wide is the broken door's frame?

Both are fairly wide. Two people can stand shoulder to shoulder on the stairs if they had to, though it would be a touch uncomfortable. The door itself is one and a half shoulder lengths as you reckon it. Looks like it was all built to be wide enough to carry large containers like barrels and crates up and down for storage with minimal issue.

Wright pulls back his head then turns to Rook and holds up two fingers, pointing in the direction of the two creatures. Then he points gestures Rook to stand next to him down at the bottom step.
