Is there an Elene word for Paper?

Elene paper has nowhere near the consistency of the Terran variety (and therefore varies greatly in quality and weight, to the point where it would likely cause all sorts of paper jams in a modern laser printer).

But yes, it does exist and there is a word for it. There are even books made with the stuff, though generally only fairly wealthy people have access to them.

That is about to change in a hurry.

Not necessarily. The key tech there is moveable type, and we can do simple pamphlets and flyers off carved plates of metal or wood (which they may already have). Also, even if we make a 'modern' press and type, the question remains if they want one...if the local society isn't interested, they won't adopt it.

Yeah I don't think the quality of the local paper will be too much to our detriment. Early printing presses probably had to deal with the same thing, and there's no reason we can't design our printing press to account for the low quality paper.

I assume there'll be some manner of use for us to exploit, even if it only ends up printing books in small amounts to sell to rich people.

Bibles, people. Bibles. That's what kick started the original printing press, and I'm pretty sure the Elene church will be just as interested.

Depending on how things work, we may end up putting a lot of monks out of business.

Maybe? Honestly, porn was what kept the early presses going until someone started translating the classics and novels were invented. As far as bibles go, they weren't a big market until the Reformation and the move to democratize biblical interpretation; the Church was not at all fond of commoners owning or reading them. We'd have to find out what the Elene Church thinks of the laity owning holy books.

Though it has occurred to me that the locals haven't had a chance to learn that writers lie yet. What we print will be much more credible than it should be simply because it was printed.

If we do become pornographers I'd really rather that not be attached to our names. I wouldn't be opposed to manufacturing it if we sold it to the underworld and let them distribute it.

Good thing we know a guy who knows some people, then.

Honestly, this is going to depend a lot on who the new Arch-Prelate is. (Feel free to ask various Patriarchs what they think of the idea).

Oh, and while Talen does know some people who can sell things discreetly, it won't take Einstein to figure out that printed material is probably originating from the people who have a printing press. (There's ways around that as well, starting with making sure that there are plenty of other people with printing presses to muddy the search a bit...)

And Kajin's right - for a printing press, the quality of the local paper should be fine. If you get a particularly thin batch it might tear a bit, but that won't stop the presses and isn't really more than an annoyance. Worst-case scenario would probably be running out of paper, due to the suppliers not being ready for your sudden unexpected demand.

Can I roll rapport to inspire the masses and give our printed type that extra zing?

You can! That seems like a good use for rapport.

Actually making the press requires going down to the trucks for the necessary parts; you could start now immediately and miss the rest of the planning meeting, or start immediately after the planning meeting (and spend tomorrow going around everywhere with an Insufficient Sleep aspect), or you can do so first thing in the morning. I'd been assuming you would be staying in the room with the others until the planning is done, but no-one's going to actually stop you if you insist on marching out early.

I think I'll get started immediately. The more pamphlets we print out the greater our uprising shall be.

Printing more pamphlets than there are people in the city would be of... questionable usefulness.
