Have the Elenes invented an Arabic/Indian type place valued mathematical system, or are they using a more Roman/ancient world type digit valued system?

The Elene number system has more in common with Roman numbers than the Arabic number system. It's cumbersome, hard to use, and difficult to work with.

This is doubtless why even educated men have to take a lot of effort to do simple calculations.

I think we'd be looking to get pamphlets to the marketplace(s), but the well to do and influential don't tend to do their own shopping. The Basilica and the better neighborhoods need them too, and it would probably help if we sent a few 'guys' who were told the story to help spread the word among the probably largely illiterate farmers and low level servants.

Are we aware of what, exactly, the reaction of the populace has been?

There are a number of small boys, about Talen's age but hopefully less inclined to petty theft. They're a sort of a junior branch of the Arch-Prelate's Guard, and are just as strictly neutral as the more senior division. Their duties consist almost entirely of fetching and carrying for people.

I'm trying to think of a good name for our newspaper. The two I have so far are the Frother and the Daily Panic.

Any thoughts?

Yeah, Arkady would probably chuckle at the idea of calling the newspaper Truth (Pravda). Might well work, though; this isn't a sophisticated audience.
