Piper gives Arkady a giggle, several kisses (two on his nose, one on each cheek, one on his chin) and then, little mercenary as she is, moves on to cadging kisses out of the next Terran.

--------------

Little else of particular note happens before it's time to leave again (there are a couple of wild animal attacks, but nothing that doesn't very swiftly fall to Felix putting a bullet through its' brain, and the colony gains a little extra meat in the process).

So, where to next?

Felix would like to scout the surrounding regions. Move from town to town, working our way to the port. Trade small things that he can convince David and Captain Argent to part with for food, coin, and manufacturing supplies that'll be useful in the coming weeks. If the colony has any furs saved up from all the wild animal attacks he'd like to trade those, too. He'll use the pretense of trade to forge connections with people. Rub elbows. Shake hands. Make friends. Make friends who know things. Make friends with friends who can do things.

Felix would also like David to send a team with chainsaws and grinders down the road through the forest to clear out the trees and stumps. Make travel in and out of the forest faster for the trucks.

While the team is doing this they can also keep their ears to the ground for possible magic artifacts. Stuff they can study, use themselves, or power the spell that will help save the Queen.

Felix will also request a few days rations of potatoes and some potato seeds to trade. The locals may find them interesting and he can trade them, allow the locals to experiment with growing a small amount of potatoes come next year.

After some discussion with David re trade of various goods for items, the group obtains a small supply of trade goods; some spices, a few furs from creatures who thought they could eat humans, and a full download onto their tablets of various how-to manuals which they can then use to try to teach useful things to people. So far as vanity items go, David points out that they could 3D-print a tiny decorative bust from a photograph, which would probably make an acceptable gift for the person in the photograph; though they'd need to take the photograph first and then have it printed.

Potato seeds would make excellent trade goods under other circumstances; however, it seems that potatoes are already known to the natives, somewhat limiting their value. (David insists that this means that the natives must be the descendants of some other human colonisation effort, and what appears to be magic must therefore be some failing remnants of some unknown product of science not yet invented at the start of your journey.)

Be that as it may, though, you indubitably have trade goods.

Piper can be found playing her pipes while seated in the branches of a tree just outside the Ship. When asked about Styric villages, she lowers her pipes and raises an eyebrow. "Do you really think that's a good idea?"

"Excellent," Felix says. "I'm pretty good at making friends so I'll use these goods to rub elbows and hobnob around the nation. Make friends with the locals and try to gain information that'll be useful. Don't forget I plan to bring a lot of food supplies back, so send a few colonists along the road to widen it out a bit."

Felix starts packing up the trucks and inspecting them for damages and whatnot. He'd like to leave, shortly.

Arkady contemplates Piper. "Very well, Piper; what is wrong with it?"

"Styric peasants aren't like Elenes. They're skittish, frightened of strangers. You're not Styric, and you're a stranger - if you find them, they'll take fright and the entire village will break apart, move out, and re-settle somewhere else."

Felix looks up from his packing.

"I can't imagine it's like that for no reason."

Piper shakes her head. "It's not," she says. "It's deliberate."

She pauses for a moment, then takes a deep breath. "The people of Zemoch are - genetically - descended from Elene and Styric stock. Most are hybrids, but some bloodlines are almost pure Styric, and it is from those that Otha chooses his spies, because they don't stand out on this side of the border in the same way as the mixed-race Zemochs would. And your average Elene peasant has no way to tell the local Styric apart from a Zemoch spy. So, when even a low-ranking Zemoch mage blights the crops of an Elene settlement, sickens their cows, poisons their well, gloats loudly from a nearby hilltop, and then retreats along a very clear trail that leads to the nearest Styric settlement - well. There really isn't a good way for that story to end.

"The Zemochs have been doing this for centuries now; deliberately poisoning Elene-Styric relations, and in the process weakening both peoples. Not only that, but it means that Elenes are poorly informed about Styrics - and the Zemoch agents encourage all sorts of insalubrious rumours."

"Hopefully we can nip that in the bud.
Get aerial reconnaissance drones out in full force to catch spies crossing the border and... intercept them as they come,"
Felix drums his fingers along the barrel of his rifle. He then looks worried for a second. "How often does Zemoch get genuine defectors from its ranks?"

"All the more reason to establish good relations with the Styrics. We have no prejudices against them and we have ways of finding spies that I doubt these Zemochs will be aware of. And if we can root out the spies and saboteurs, then the Elene villagers will have no cause to go raiding. It's a win for everyone, if we can pull it off."

"We could start by leaving notes and care packages where they could be found?"

Arkady turns to look across the clearing. "We could start by asking an actual Styric for advice. Perhaps he will be willing to make an introduction."

Is Zalasbra in view?

"I've never heard of a Zemoch defector who lived long enough to cross the border," volunteers Piper. She shakes her head at Nate's suggestion - "You may have no prejudices against them, but they will still fear you - they fear any stranger. They will fear what will happen to them if you fail, but more than that, they will fear what might happen to them if you succeed, and in the process trigger an immediate response from across the Zemoch border. The last time there was outright war - the Elene kingdoms won, but not enough of the army survived to chase them back over the border." She holds out her hands. "What good are notes to those who cannot read, or care packages to those who justifiably fear traps? I - do not believe that this situation can be improved until such time as the Zemoch empire is overthrown and Azash destroyed."

Zalasbra is not immediately in view, but asking around will elicit the information that he was last seen helping out at the Blood Bee hives, not far away.

"So... don't deal with the Zemoch spies because it could immediately kick off a war?" Felix sighs. "Great. I figured that was an eventuality but I didn't think it was quite so hair trigger..."
