It takes some significant effort, and every scrap of Arkady's individuality and farming expertise, not to mention Nate's ability to do without infrastructure. But, eventually, the two undamaged Hives are settled in - some fair distance from the ship, for safety. A beekeeping expert is woken from sleep, and rather surprised to find which particular skill he is asked to employ. (A somewhat surly fellow, he grudgingly admits that Nate's and Arkady's setup is "okay" - one gets the impression that this is fairly high praise from him).

Felix, in the meantime, sets up a basic outpost around the orchard. It's a simple, two-man (or, rather, two-person) operation - and the only provision made against dragon attack is a fast two-seater motorbike and a clear route back to the ship. (For anything smaller, the pair do keep a few firearms handy).

The Outpost gains the following two permanent Aspects: Blood Bee Colony, Revitalised Orchard

Anything else anyone would like to do, before heading down to Rendor to find a sample of Darestim?

Roger makes a mental note to mention the dragons to the Captain but otherwise goes back to work on the translation program for the rest of the evening. (Zalasbra did say they probably weren't going to be a huge threat)

A brief conversation with David leads to Roger finding out that, first of all, the Captain is already aware (in a general way) of the existence of dragons. And, in all honesty, David is pretty sure that a dragon attack would do significant damage to the colony - perhaps even destroying it outright. (Though, as he points out, the ship is substantially better protected than the nearby farming villages, and if they can just survive a few more weeks, David has a neat little spreadsheet that suggests it won't be long before the colony can create weapons that could deal with even a dragon...)

Also, it seems that David and the Captain are agreed that Roger needs to go with the group to Rendor. David points out that, between the tablets and the radios in the trucks, he can continue to work on the translation program while in the field if he wants - and, more to the point, having four people who can both drive the trucks and speak Elene out there instead of only three can only improve their odds of success.

Arkady clears it with the Captain, then sets out to wake and brief another priest; preferably one who has already studied exorcism and isn't too much of an ideologue. If that combination's possible.

While Arkady is doing that, Felix gets together with David and finishes up the plans for organizing the construction efforts around the ship to streamline how quickly and efficiently things are built. He also draws up blueprints for an expendable, mass production Frost Thrower rifle attachment to make sure the colonists have an extra weapon on hand to fight the smoke fiend the team had encountered earlier.

Arkady finds a suitable candidate without too much trouble, and has little trouble getting the Captain's agreement.

The sticking point is David, who insists that keeping another person who doesn't have farming or engineering expertise alive and fed at this point will delay other defensive measures, and result in the colony taking longer to get off the ground. He is insistent, to the point of yelling at people, and loudly claiming that the extra mouth to feed will more than undo the good of discovering the orchard in the first place (it seems it will take a while for the orchard to produce anything edible).

Would Arkady like to insist?

Felix: Engineering: +5 Roll: Doesn't matter, he can't fail this one.

Though David is being kept rather busy trying to stop Arkady from waking up another mouth to feed, he is still appreciative of Felix' frost thrower designs, and arranges to have them added to a few rifles.

Arkady does in fact insist, and will tag Defender of the Faith and I'm supposed to cast out Satan at need.

"And if the next demon is coming from a different part of Hell? If it is of acid, or cold, or electricity? How will you keep it from flying down your throat and destroying your lungs, David? Will the Lord be answering you the way he has promised to answer his servants? Do you want to bet the colony on it? Or is your point being that priests have no skills of their own and do no work, and we didn't just drive up with a truckload of iron rations?"

Felix chips in.

"The rations didn't come from nowhere, David. The Church gave them to us because we've been helping them. We're on friendly terms with them. If the colony starts running low for whatever reason, we can ask for more. We're not completely alone in this. We have allies."

I'd like to put feelers out for Charity of the Church and We're Not Alone aspects to send over to Arkady for tagging to help convince David to put a little more faith in the advice we have to give and what we have to say.

Although David's insistent that waiting even a week will have repercussions on the colony's for the next ten years, Captain Argent finally overrides him. Spreadsheets or not, the Captain is not willing to bet the colony on the absence of need for exorcisms; especially when he asks, and David admits that the difference can be more than made up with sufficient, regular supplies of food coming into the colony.

David makes no secret of the fact that he's not exactly ecstatic about this, but Arkady does get to wake his chosen priest, one Father John Brown. Father Brown is (once he's had a few hours to settle down and recover from various surprises) intelligent and quick-witted enough to rapidly grasp the basics of the current situation.

--------------

And then, one morning, it's finally time to go. The trucks are packed and ready, the four English-and-Elene-speakers have places ready for them, along with Sir Ulath, and Talen, the young thief. Given that the first part of the journey will take place at the breakneck pace of the trucks, Sir Ulath's horse is being left behind for this journey, in the care of Sir Bevier; Zalasbra intends to remain with the colony as well, and Piper is being mysterious as usual (though she seems to have befriended Talen, to some degree).

Felix has his pack ready and is in the truck bed waiting to go.

Arkady takes advantage of Father Brown's presence to confess his sins before he goes, finishes any other priestly duties of his own that had come up, and looks in on the hydroponic gardens. Hopefully there are now some pepper plants growing, if not he'll suggest them. That done, come morning he heads for the trucks with his gear. "Roger, are you any good at driving?"

Btw: who's there to see them off, if anyone?

"Class C license?" Roger shrugs.

Roger is good to go. He has the tablet David provided so he can work on the program but he's going to use it sparingly since the power situation will likely be difficult to say the least.

Nate wanders out with a steaming mug of something in one hand. He's wearing a chainmail shirt and has several bundles of chainmail under his free arm. The careful eye will notice several things. The first is that Nate isn't straining all that hard to carry all that mail. the second is that the colour of the links, while close to that of steel, is just slightly off. The third detail only becomes apparent when he walks up to the group. All the links are welded shut.

He sets down the bundles.

"Hey, Who wants better armour? I dug a chainmail knitter out of storage. Figured we could sell armour to the knights or whoever else we happen to like. Also figured we could use some ourselves. Kevlar won't do much to stop swords and claws, but this will."

Sir Bevier is there to exchange farewells with Sir Ulath; Zalasbra sits quietly on a handy tree stump and observes, no doubt keeping mental notes. Captain Argent is there to wish you well and see you off. That seems to be everyone who's actually there to see you off, though there is a small group of people (led by David) deforesting a nearby area with the help of chainsaws, clearing space for more structures.

Theresa is sitting in the truck with Felix.

Arkady will find that there are some pepper plants growing, and they are in fact doing suspiciously well - they appear to be a few days older than they really should be.
