Felix splays his fingers, showing the tips.

"Every individual finger on every individual human hand has its own print. A unique series of stripes and spirals that is entirely unlike any other print on any other human hand. Our skin is also covered in a minute amount of naturally produced oil that keeps our skin from drying and cracking. So, when a person places their hand on any polished surface, the oil from their skin leaves a tracing of the prints on their fingers. With a light brush and some fine dust, you can make these trace oils visible and see the prints left behind."

Felix shrugs.

"If you think someone committed a crime and you found fingerprints at the scene, you can bring the suspect in and use ink and paper to get a copy of their fingerprints for comparison to the ones found at the crime to establish whether or not they were at the scene. It might not confirm they did it or not, but it can confirm if they were there when they said they weren't or whoever the last person to hold a knife or sword was."

"It doesn't work well on things that absorb oil; clean wood or cloth, say. Something already greasy will not preserve a small oil stain from your hand very well." Arkady adds. "And of course, someone who knows about this can put on gloves before they do something naughty. But if that scroll Adus was reading and it's case were examined, then we might find the marks of whoever wrote it."

Several people at the table promptly peer closely at their own fingertips (the knights having to remove their chainmail gloves first). Piper takes the opportunity to move to the Count's lap and give him a hug.

"Huh," says Vanire. "How do you know they're unique?"

"Don't we already know who wrote that scroll?" asks Count Radun.

"Whether he put quill to paper himself or dictated it, the words on that scroll definitely came from Martel," says Vanire, firmly. "I don't think this would help us prove anything unless we had access to his fingers, and, well, I don't see any way of getting access to his fingers where it wouldn't be simpler just to kill him."

"The patterns are formed randomly before you are being born. Identical twins do not have the same patterns. Now it is true that two people, somewhere between this world and ours, could have the same print on a finger; but that is like both rolling a thousand dice and getting exactly the same number on each die. The odds of any of us sharing a print with any other specific person are not worth discussing." Arkady shrugs. "Nothing is perfect but God. But if there is one chance in a million that one person somewhere in the world shares a fingerprint with you, and you are the one in front of a judge, then saying that they did whatever it is and left behind only the fingerprint you do share will not impress them."

"It's unique enough to matter, though determining if a finger print found matches a finger print obtained is a skill that needs to be trained and can be gotten wrong sometimes," Felix mentions. "But we're getting off on a tangent, here. On to the Darestim? How far away is Rendor, how long would it take to get there by horse back, and do they speak the same language that we're speaking now?"

"Couple of months by horse," says Vanire. "Elene isn't the only language spoken there, but it's understood widely enough that you should be able to get by."

"Hot," volunteers Sir Ulath.

Vanire nods. "Very hot place. Sun directly overhead, blasting down on the land below. Also the home of the Eshandist Heresy."

"So about a week's worth of travel to get there by vehicle, I think," Felix replies. "Temperature is little concern. The ship should have some climate appropriate clothing and the vehicles have air conditioning. Heck, we could probably make a ton of coin selling ice from an ice maker if it's really so hot."

"Desert or jungle? I've worked in both but each will need different gear, and will affect what kind of transportation we'll need to bring along."

"I still say we try the crime lord first. It'll only take a day or two at most, during which we can have someone else tracking down all the things we'll need for this little quest anyway."

"Desert, and you should probably switch to horses before entering Rendor itself," says Vanire. "The Eshandists... well, there's a lot of history that's not immediately relevant, but to make a long story short, the Eshandists would probably kill anyone they even suspect of using any type of magic within Rendor's borders. An individual Eshandist isn't generally much of a fighter, a single Church Knight would have no trouble with a dozen Eshandists, but they tend to go around in groups of several thousand howling fanatics, all following some charismatic leader who's generally senile or delusional or both. While in Rendor, it'll be best not to show off any abilities or technology not already in common use, and it'll definitely be important not to show any sign of friendly relations with the Elene Church. The Eshandists have... well, they've tried to be at war with us for a few centuries now."

Vanire shrugs. "It's a bit one-sided. Every time they leave the desert and attack, the Church Knights pretty much wipe out the attacking force. But they know the desert better than we do, so they often vanish into it for decades at a time."

"Great. Another sandbox full of howling fanatics."

Nate rubs his face, suddenly tired.

"Okay. Fine. Not a problem. I can work with this. Wouldn't be the first time I've faced off against thousands of lunatics hellbent on tearing me limb from limb. At least these ones won't be armed with guns and grenades and IEDs."

Vanire nods. "An apt description of Rendor. There are places where you can go for aid, if necessary. The Church maintains a number of small monasteries, mostly near major cities. They'll have limited supplies and very limited ability to provide help beyond a safe place to rest, but they keep their ears to the ground and will be able to share rumours and local information."

"Well this is just great," Felix sighs. "Either we deal with the criminals or we deal with the foaming-at-the-mouth crazies that could kill us on sight if we're not careful enough to act appropriately."

Felix buries his head in his hands.

"At the very least we should go back to retrieve the Colony Deed and take it back to the ship, before we do anything else."

Vanire nods. "That's probably a good idea," he says. "With your vehicles, you have more than enough time to go back and resupply. I can send young Berit to try to track down Sparhawk, and deal with the Primate myself."

"Right, is anyone opposed to taking the deed back to the colony now and coming up with a plan after talking to the Captain?" Felix asks. Turning to Vanire, he continues. "We'd be happy to drive Berit to a town near the ship where he can pick up a horse if you want to shave a few days off the travel time. I could also talk with the Captain and see about getting him a driver and a vehicle to take him to shave off even more time if the driver is taken care of?"

With a (carefully) straight face, Arkady adds "And of course we still have those carts if anyone else is wanting a ride back. The road out may be needing some clearing first, but when that is done there are plenty of seats."
