It is a time of darkness.

Having succeeded in establishing his Galactic Empire, Emperor Palpatine is slowly crushing all light of freedom from the galaxy. Only in the lawless Fringes can one find respite from the tyranny of the Empire, although life here is not without its risks.

It is in one such forgotten corner of the galaxy that a small ship makes a nondescript landing, it's occupants wanting nothing more than a hot meal, a tank full of fuel, and a few credits to spend. Simple enough goals, but life in the Fringes can be harsh, and their landing has not gone without notice......

The Path has set down on Kemal Station, an outpost on a damp, foggy moon of the gas giant Kemal in the Arkanis sector along the Triellus Trade Route, not far from Tatooine in grid R16. You can't see farther than a few dozen meters out the viewports due to the fog, but the ship's sensors show the settlement isn't more than a few hundred meters away.

"Do we know anything about this place?" asks Crystal, making some adjustments to his current Bothan form. "They don't have some sort of well-known anti-Bothan sentiment here or anything?"

"I've never been here before," Dran replies, making sure his lightsaber is hidden neatly away in his gauntlet and his blaster is tucked into the harness in his jacket. "I haven't heard anything about what the residents are like, either, so I couldn't tell you either way. Best keep an eye about us, as always."

With that said, he walks down the ramp to the ship, closes it once Crystal clears if he's coming with, and makes his way towards the settlement.

"No problem. I got this."

Crystal follows Dran into the settlement.

As Crystal and Dran step off the ship, humidity and the sounds of life hit them. Small creatures chirp and croak in the fog, and the odd splash reaches their ears. Although the land the Path is on is solid enough, a boardwalk rises out of the mist over the placid water and reeds of a swamp, leading toward Kemal Station.

The boardwalk joins a larger one, and before long ends in a larger landmass. The dim lights of a fence of sensor beacons glows in the fog, and the raucous sounds of Spacers taking leave make their way through the veil.

Crystal nods in the direction of the noises. "Sounds like a good place to pick up dinner, maybe a paying job."

"Warm food is good, and paying work is even better," Dran replies. He makes his way towards the activity indicated. "Let's hope we find what we need, eh? Maybe if we luck into a well paying job we can even stock the hold up with something good. Those ration bars might have everything you need, but they're not much for taste."

Buildings begin to materialize out of the fog. Mostly ramshackle affairs knocked together out of local materials, interspersed with more expensive ramshackle affairs made of durasteel. Crystal and Dran follow the noise to a slightly better maintained two story durasteel building. The sign outside reads "Darmek's Saloon", and music can now be heard coming from inside. As you approach, some overly inebriated spacer is forcibly ejected out the swinging doors. As he turns to slur obscenities back inside, a blaster bolt fired out the door to the sound of raucous laughter convinces him to move along.

"Seems lively enough," Dran says cheerfully as he makes his way into the bar. Once inside he takes a quick look around, surveying the surroundings. He'll head for a board with bounties and job listings if he can find one. If not, he'll head to the bar and see what's on the menu.

Bounties and job listings are good, but those only tell you about the jobs people want to make public. Crystal heads into the bar, and looks at the people. Who's flashing around a lot of wealth? Who's looking depressed, here to drown their sorrows because they're in trouble and can't see a way out? If you've got both wealth and a problem, Crystal will be happy to take the former in order to remove the latter.

Darmek's Saloon does if fact have a job board. At the moment, it seems to mostly be the usual wash of fetch quests, lost pets, and personal ads. If push comes to shove, it'll pay the bills, but there won't be much left over.

At the bar, Crystal meets Darmek, a two eyed Gran with a jolly disposition. He'll get Crystal whatever drink he wants, within reason, and asks for credits up front.

No one at the bar really seems to be trying to drown their sorrows, at least not right now, (it's only mid-afternoon, local time) and the most wealth being flashed is at the sabbac table at the back of the saloon. That said, it does appear to be a fair amount of wealth, and the players seem very intent on their game.

Crystal pays a couple of credits for a serving of what works out to flavoured sugar water, and thanks the barkeep, and strolls over to quietly observe the sabacc game.

He doesn't care that much about the game, concentrating rather on the players, attempting to get a read on their emotional state. Specifically, to see if any of the players are desperate, nervous, or jumpy enough that they might not be playing an entirely honest game.

Empathy: +4. Roll:+1. Total: +5. Goal= +3 Success with Spin.

Sleight Of Hand: +1. Roll: 0, +2 Spin. Total: +3. Goal= +3 Success, by the skin of your teeth.

None of the gamblers are desperate, nervous, or jumpy. They exude the calm confidence and easy, loaded smiles of professional card sharks. Knowing this, Crystal is just barely able to notice the telltale flicker of fingers palming spare cards and dealing from everywhere in the deck. This game doesn't appear to be one of chance, where the best, and luckiest gambler may win, but one where the best cheater wins, regardless of what luck may have to say about it.

Professionals, all of them. They won't bet what they can't afford, and there's no profit in calling any one of them out on it, not in this sort of game. Does that Corellian have two Queens of Sabers in his hand?

Crystal stroll back to the bar, hoping to strike up a conversation with the bar-Gran or, failing that, one of the other patrons

Darmek is more then happy to start up a conversation. Gran are a very social species.
