"Shall we get this hunting party started, then?" Felix asks. "Anything else we need to know?"

"It's got a nasty bite, but it's not poisonous," says Sir Bevier.
Felix: Survival: +1 Roll: -2 Total: -1 Nathan: Surival: +4 Roll: -1 Total: +3 Sir Ulath: Survival: +1 Roll: +0 Total: +1 Sir Bevier: Survival: +0 Roll: -2 Total: -2 David: Survival: -1 Roll: +2 Total: +1 Dr. Vanderbilt: Survival: -1 Roll: -4 Total: -5
Felix tries to follow the cockatrice's trail, but loses it almost instantly. He knows just about enough about survival to realise that their group is moving through the forest with as much noise as a herd of elephants - not that he himself is being particularly helpful.
Compared to Dr. Vanderbilt, though, Felix is as quiet as a shadow. The good doctor, as great as she might be at healing, seems to have a positive genius for doing exactly the wrong thing at the wrong time in the wild - if there's a twig, she steps on it, if there's a bird that suddenly springs into the air, it does so in front of her (causing her to jump back in surprise, slip on a patch of grass, and roll screaming down a small slope).
By some minor miracle, no-one is more than slightly shaken by the time Nathan manages to track their quarry down. Unfortunately, their loud approach has warned the inhabitants of the nest of their arrival - Nathan can hear movement up ahead, and he's pretty sure they won't take the cockatrices by surprise. (It's questionable whether Dr. Vanderbilt is capable of taking anything by surprise in the wild)

Well, that could have gone better... Felix finds himself idly thinking as he takes a look at the nest and the surroundings, hoping to spot the Cockatrice and how many of them there might be. He activated the night vision settings on his visor before arriving in the hopes that the adjusted wavelengths of light might mitigate or stop the effect a Cockatrice's sight would have on him. The visor should account for light levels and adjust, making it so that he's not blinded.
What's the situation... How many are there, and what does the terrain look like?

The terrain is heavily forested, with a lot of underbrush to hide in. Nathan is certain that the nest is not far ahead (though you can't quite see it through the trees), and there's a certain amount of rustling in the underbrush which suggests that any cockatrices nearby are preparing to defend said nest, but from here you cannot tell how many there are.

"Alright guys, gonna need all of you to step back a ways. I've got a house warming present for our neighbors..." Felix pulls out the shaped Incendiary Charge he'd brought with him. "I'll use this to burn them up and the nest in one fell swoop. Gonna need you all to stay back way off and keep an eye out while I work."
Setting to work after everyone moves back a distance, Felix moves as fast as he can to get the charge in place and set up. Before they left on the hunt he rigged it with flickering lights and a noise emitter to attract attention as soon as the device was prepped and set to go. Once the device is set to explode he turns and runs, hoping to get out of the blast radius in time.
Engineering Roll to set up the Incendiary Charge.

"We'd best do as the man says. Come on everyone."
Nate leads the group to what he knows is a safe distance and has them get into cover behind a small rise in the land. He takes extra care to make sure Dr. Vanderbilt stays out of harms way. Then he works his way back down the line to make sure no curious captain's assistants or worse, knights, stick their heads up where they can eat a piece of shrapnel. He then gets in cover himself, pops in a pair of earplugs and uses his mirror to safely observe Felix as he works.
"Everyone cover their ears. This is going to be loud."

Everyone (with the exception of Felix and possibly Nathan) covers their ears, closes their eyes, and waits.
Nathan's mirror rises cautiously above the small rise in the land, well out of range of the bomb. Nathan watches as Felix sets the explosive, raising his visor to make sure he has the right colour wire attached to the right place, and shaping the charge to face the nest. Nathan sees Felix activate the little noisemaker that should attract the attention of any nearby cockatrices. And Nathan has an excellent view as Felix turns around to run from the explosion... and comes face to face with a cockatrice. With his visor still raised.
Felix freezes in place.
Cockatrice: Intimidation: +3 Roll: -1 Total: +2 Felix: Resolve: +1 Roll: +1 Total: +2
Felix: Composure: OOOOO O Cockatrice: Composure: OOOOO
Felix can't move much - he can talk, he can (with much effort) make minor movements. The cockatrice staring him down can't move much either, but Felix can hear another one moving around in the area... if anyone can break the cockatrice's composure, then Felix can move again, and try to get clear before the explosion goes off...

Luckily, Felix is holding his rifle and appears to be capable of small movements, enough to aim and pull the trigger. Unluckily, the rifle isn't pointed anywhere near the Cockatrice and it's gonna take a fair bit of effort to even aim it at the blasted thing.
Speaking of blasted... hoping the bomb's light show is proving a sufficient distraction, Felix fights as hard as he can against the gaze of the Cockatrice, straining to get out of its grip so he can make a run for it.

"Crap. Everyone keep their heads down."
Nate rolls to his knees and cracks a shot off at the cockatrice having a staring contest with Felix.

Felix struggles to break free from the cockatrice's gaze:
Felix: Intimidation: +0 Roll: -2 Total: -2 Cockatrice: Resolve: +0 Roll: -2 Total: -2
...and makes absolutely no progress, despite his steadily growing panic.
Nathan decides to try and help out with a bullet:
Nathen: Guns: +5 Roll: +1 Total: +6 Cockatrice: Fists: +0 (locked in staredown) Roll: -1 Total: -1 Minor consequence generated
Nathan's bullet clips the cockatrice's skull, and is swiftly glances around, trying to see who dares attack. The instant he's free from its gaze, Felix surges forward, charging for the rise behind which the others are hiding...
Felix: Athletics +1 Roll: +2 Total: +3 Target: +2
Felix dives for cover, narrowly in advance of the explosion, knocking Nathan onto his back an instant before the grenade goes off, the explosion shakes the ground...
...and everyone else cautiously begins opening their eyes and removing their hands from their ears.
"Was that it, or will there be more?" asks Sir Bevier.

"Jeez, thanks for the save, Nate," Felix gasps. "That thing had me by the eyeballs."
Felix takes a moment to catch his breath before replying to Sir Bevier.
"No, no other explosions. All we gotta do now is wait for the fire to take care of the nest and keep an eye out to see if any of them manage to survive the initial blast."

There's a general cautious peering over the edge of the rise to see what happened. And there's a brand new clearing where the bomb went off, with a few small fires on the edges, two badly burnt cockatrice corpses, and a nest full of eggs in the approximate middle.
Sir Ulath holds out one hand and waggles it slightly. "Eight out of ten," he says.

"And that is an explosive device, Sir Knights," Felix says, hopping over the rise they'd been hiding behind and cautiously making his way to the nest. "Any questions?"
Felix takes his rifle and shoots each Cockatrice in the chest several times to make sure they're down. He walks up to the nest to examine the eggs and see if any of them survived.
"Can someone cut their heads off? I want to see if we can do some experiments on that ability of theirs. Being locked in place like that was terrifying, I wouldn't mind learning the exact mechanism that does that and seeing if there's a way to block it out."
