"Someone do the honor? I'll take the barb up to Doctor Vanderbilt. She'll be able to make anti venom out of it in case we run into another one. Could definitely be useful..." Once someone hacks off the venomous barb, he'll carefully bind it and bag it and run it up to the Doctor to have it processed in the lab when she finds the time, once again cursing the lack of a proper lift each and every rung of the ladder up. Once he's delivered the barb and explained what happened he'll check in with everyone and see about the general goings on of the crew. See if they need him to do anything. If not, then he'll head on back down and help with Nathan's projects.

If it looks like the tasks will take long to finish, he'll draw up plans that can be picked up and followed by anyone, so he'll be able to move on and do the same for other projects.

"Hmm. Cat tends to be a bit gamey. It should make a passable stew though, and the rest can be salted and smoked. It should keep for awhile."

Nate gets to butchering, but pays close attention to the layout of the critter, almost conducting an autopsy.

Nathan: Survival +4 Roll: -1 Total: +3

In Nathan's professional medical opinion, this is not a creature he wants to run into alone. Even if he gets the drop on one of these, it's got a good chance of taking him apart.

There's a lot less wing muscle than he would expect; and given the size of the wings against the weight of the body, it doesn't look like this thing should be able to get off the ground. But the wings don't seem to have any other purpose...

Dr. Vanderbilt takes the stinger and, after double-checking that no-one was actually stung and no-one is in need of immediate first aid, promises to look at it later. Piper looks disgusted at the grisly tail, but makes no comment.

A brief search of the area shows that everyone is alive, well, and strongly inclined to not go out in the woods alone. David Ember has apparently locked himself in the bridge for the last hour or so.

Locked himself in the bridge? Curious. Felix asks around as to why, then goes to try and speak with David himself, politely knocking on the door if he can't get in. If there's an intercom, he'll try to communicate with the occupant of the bridge.

"Felix, reporting in with results from survey and news of recent skirmish with hostile creature."

Nobody is quite sure what he's doing in there, but he apparently doesn't appreciate interruptions. But David unlocks the bridge doors pretty quickly when Felix calls out. (The intercom system is not working at the moment)

"Hostile creature? What hostile creature? You're supposed to be installing a water pump, not picking fights!" David accompanies his words with an angry glare.

"I finished installing the water pump some time ago. My task finished, I elected to aid Thomas Swale, our farmer, in locating viable ground. You'll be pleased to know there's a swamp nearby we can start work on draining. It was shortly after this that we were assaulted by the beast. Really big flyer with a venomous stinger. About the size of a lion. It interrupted our work and we didn't take too kindly to that, so we put it down. No injuries and I've sent the stinger to Doctor Vanderbilt so she can have anti venom processed and on hand in case we run into another one."

Felix eyes David for a moment before continuing.

"Might I ask what it is you're doing? If you're planning the establishment of our colony I think I could be of assistance. I'm as sure a hand at designing and planning as I am at building."

(Rapport roll to get me in the door. Spend a Fate point on Environmental Colonial Manager and Laser Focus if need be. I'll hazard a guess at David having a Nervous Breakdown mental aspect to tag for free before that, if one such exists.)

David glares at Felix a moment longer, then steps back to let him in. "A flyer the size of a lion is highly implausible, unless it's extraordinarily lightweight and thus fragile. But whatever. Maybe you can help. There are two things I need to do; I need to figure out how to get enough of a steady supply of food to wake up the Captain, and I need to figure out why we landed here, now, and what's going on."

"It certainly wasn't fragile. The thing took half a dozen bullets to the skull and chest and a sword right to the heart before it finally died," Felix nods his head in acquiescence. "And, granted, I didn't actually see the thing flying. It was already here and fighting Nathan and the Knight I'd left there to assist him when I arrived at the scene. It did have pretty big wings, though, so I assumed it could. As I said, this place is too strange to discount much of anything. For the time being I suggest anyone who leaves the ship is either armed or under armed escort, in case more of those things show up."

"As for our problems, the why and how of us ending up here isn't something I particularly care about. It's just one strange thing in a long long list of strange things that's happened to me since I woke up. You'll have to figure that out on your own if you really want to know. As for food... Our two greatest sources of short term are trade and hunting/gathering. You seemed to have a heart attack when I said I'd traded away one plow, so I haven't really bothered trying to find out if there are any other places we could trade with... Though I would like to make the statement that it IS a possibility we should look into in the future once we've determined a list of what is and isn't mission critical."

Felix takes a moment to order his thoughts.

"Nathan has gotten started on building a smoke house for preserving meat. I'll be going out there soon to join him in helping build it. Once it's up we can go out and hunt in the forest and fill up our storage full of all kinds of meats. He's a pretty good survivalist and hunter, so he can keep us in good stock. Plus whatever kinds of plants we can forage. Depending on how the seasons work around here that should hold a small crew of us long enough for the first harvest to come in. What have you had the other crew doing, if I might ask? If they're trying to fix anything I can swing by for a few moments and see if I have any help to offer before heading back outside."

David snorts. "Can't have been able to fly, then. Right. On the food. We can trade - we'll have to if we want anything like a balanced meal, we don't know what native plants, if any, are edible. But nothing we can't quickly and easily replace. So anything we find in the forest. Meat, firewood, rare herbs, maybe. Even labour can be traded if necessary, doing a job of some sort for food. If we can get the 3D printers working, and a good source of high-quality bioplastics, then we'll have a lot that we can trade."

"Hunting's good. We don't want to overhunt, if there's nothing left around to hunt we're in trouble. But if that smokery is working, and we trade the excess meat for grains and vegetables to maintain a healthy diet..."

Felix will notice, when he looks at the papers on the small foldout desk, that the edges of each sheet are exactly parallel and there's a constant, one-centimetre gap between adjacent sheets. A glance at the terminal behind David will show that it is logged on, with administrative access.

"Used them for gliding, maybe?" Felix suggests before moving on to the next topic. "Knowledge is another trade good we have, though the method of distribution could be a hassle and what we choose to give would require careful consideration lest it be used against us. As for labor as trade, we have more than enough medical equipment on board the ship. We could set up a small outpost at ground level staffed by a small team. It could offer medical services to the surrounding villages in exchange for food and other supplies."

Felix eyes the desk and computer, stepping forward to take a closer look unless David stops him. He doesn't touch. As he looks he continues to talk.

"Once we get the smoke house built I'll see about getting those 3D printers working and meet with the others to find a source of bio plastic."

"Medical? Yes, we could certainly set up a small hospital. Something fortified enough to stand up to winged-lion-thing attacks." David makes a meticulously neat note on one of the lists. He eyes Felix as Felix approaches the computer, then reaches out to lock the terminal.

Felix: Alertness: +2 Roll: -1 Aspects: Nervous Breakdown, Fortune Roulette: +4 Total: +5

Felix gets a good, albeit brief, look at what David's been doing on the terminal. It seems he's been looking through old computer logs. Comparing the datestamp on the log with the datestamp on the clock suggests that the logs David was looking at date back to an active terminal session - about twenty-four hours before Felix woke up.

"We're supposed to have a source of bioplastic; special, genetically engineered soybean seeds. Still edible, but barely... but we won't be able to use them until we have farmland, and enough time for a crop to grow to maturity. Which won't be for a couple of years, leaving plenty of time to sort out the printers. Maybe you should work on the smokehouse first, then a small external hospital facility?"

Well.

That is certainly something.

Who the hell was awake and active on this ship before Felix and Nathan? If there's anyone else on board this ship they've done a damn fine job of hiding themselves. It's obvious that David doesn't want him to know it, so he keeps mum about seeing it.

"Will do. Smoke house, then external medical facility. I'll query the Knights about getting tentative relations set up with the local villages on that front in the mean time. I'll keep on the look out for a potential bioplastic source substitute as well. The labs should be able to do a scan of any plant material we find, so if there's something on this planet we can use... Anyway, it's one more thing on a long list of things that needs looking into. I'd best get started on what's in front of us."

With that in mind, Felix heads back out the way he came. Time to get started on sorting out their food situation. He tells Nathan about what he saw once they get to work on putting up the smoke house.

"Right." David nods, and locks the door behind Felix when he leaves.

Felix: Engineering: +5 Roll: -2 Total: +3

While Nathan is a competent engineer, Felix is a genius engineer. Even as distracted as he is by the revelation that someone had been logging on to the computers before they'd awoken, Felix manages to find several ways to improve on Nathan's smokehouse design that will allow it to be constructed faster... now, instead of it taking several days, they'll probably be finished tomorrow (with the knights helping out with the manual labour).

While they work, Felix queries the Knights about the sorts of medical problems the locals might experience and the techniques they use to treat them. He keeps a mental note of what local capabilities are and what the most frequent injuries happen to be. He explains what their own capabilities are regarding various medical practices and asks about the viability of opening up a basic medical center that offers services in exchange for food, supplies, and maybe even currency if the patron they're tending has it to spare.

Nathan raises an eyebrow when Felix explains what he saw on David's console.

"Well, that would explain how the ship landed, but it also raises more questions then it answers."

He is very happy with Felix's modifications to his designs, and sets to work with gusto.
