Since most of what hydroponic nutrients are is minerals, I suspect those stains aren't as much of a write-off as all that. And happily, generator/fuel cell fuel is a very easy fix with a convenient source of cellulose at hand.

Oh, and though I haven't worked it into a story yet, Arkady got dragged to Rome and made a bishop. He's almost certainly the only Ukrainian Catholic priest on board, and one of the very few eastern rite; and so the Pope decided that making him one of the men who will join in convocation to choose a new Pope (for the new world, of course) would help ensure that he and his won't get completely marginalized (and grow schismatic over it). I'm still batting back and forth how the issue of clerical celibacy was decided; but what with one thing and another, I'd suspect all Catholic clergy involved would be bound to Eastern rite rules on the new world (priests may not marry, but married men may be ordained).

See Arkady's head hurt...

Btw; organizational rank (however useless in context) is an aspect, right?

For an NPC, organisational rank is almost always an Aspect, where it exists. For a PC, organisational rank often makes a very good idea for an aspect (or will be closely related to an aspect) but it's up to you what aspects your character has. (Arkady's current character sheet, containing the aspects I could find for him, is in the first post of this topic).

Question. Would the fertilizer refining plant also be capable of processing waste from living organisms, or is that an entirely different machine built into the ship?

It would be capable. The ship's internal recyclers will do a better job of it (once they are supplied with power), but there's no hurry; the ship also boasts a septic tank, capable of holding the entire output of all the thousands currently in cryosleep for several weeks. (So, with the current ship's population, you've got a few years to go).

It would also be significantly easier to just dump leaves into the fertiliser plant.

By Felix's estimation, how many more windmills do we need to power everything involved?

When you say "everything involved" do you mean:

- Everything that can be powered (far too many)?
- The ship's recycling systems (one windmill)?
- The fertiliser refining plant (one windmill)?
- Everything involved in getting the hydroponics set up (one to three windmills, depending)?

Everything involved with getting hydroponics up and running, including getting the fertilizer refining planet operational and the ship's water distillation system online.

On the grounds of keeping things simple and easy to manage, each new system will require one windmill. So, water distillation, one windmill. Fertiliser plant, one windmill. Sunlamps, one windmill. Those will be enough for hydroponics (you might even be able to get hydroponics going without some of those).

Onboard waste management/water recycling, one windmill. Non-emergency lighting, one windmill. Electric car charging station, one windmill. Onboard freezers, one windmill. And so on.

Guessing the more difficult to establish power systems will operate more at once at the expense of being harder to get going and harder to maintain.

If we get hydroponics up, how long before the first harvest? I think the brochure mentioned it being a couple weeks, but that could be misleading or the seeds for those particular crops could be dust by now.

Exactly, yes. Also. they take up less space than the equivalent number of windmills.

Depends on what you're growing - apparently leafy greens are harvestable in merely three to four weeks. You'll probably get a lot of lettuce and spinach at first.

Hmm... So we set up the power, do the maintenance we need on all relevant systems, and we can have salads to go with the spoils from our hunts within a month's time? Sooner if we don't mind harvesting early, since lettuce is edible as soon as it sprouts. We just wouldn't be getting a full head. Two weeks to self sustain a larger group of people, if we plant a whole bunch of lettuce to hold us until the other crops come in?

Probably less work than clearing out dense forest or draining swampland, dependent on how difficult it is to get all relevant systems up and running.

Yeah, that's about right. How long it takes depends on how good your Engineering rolls are - the best Engineering roll rolled in putting up a given system determines how long it takes.
