"PEOPLE OF THE CITY! YOUR NEW KING DEMANDS THT YOU HALT!" Anthony shouts in his deepest, loudest and most persuasive voice.

A crossbow bolt wings past, taking a small chunk out of his left ear. "Get off my awning!" someone yells from behind him, leaning out the window of the second-story apartment level with the hat-shop awning he's standing on. "I won't stand for looting!"

Beneath his feet, there's a sound of breaking glass as real looters start breaking into the hat shop.

He leaps from the elf and creates a couple of deafening booms (audible to everyone but the horses), accompanied by flashes of light. This is swiftly followed by a scream of pain from in the crowd, a smell of burned meat, and a scream of "He got struck by lightning!"

With any luck, that'll send the brawlers running off without having to start throwing genuine lightning about.

It does indeed send everyone running, only not all in the same direction. The angry mob becomes a panicked mob, milling over the top of each other, trampling the fallen under their feet. From amid the crowd, horses, goats, dogs, and cats begin to cry in panic as well.

"Alright, alright, I can tell when a man is not wanted. If you'll excuse me, I'll leave this place and we'll let bygones be bygones. No need to trash a perfectly good tavern on my account." Ruan starts walking toward the door purposefully. That said, he's also keeping an eye out for any cheap shots.

Well that he is, because six of them try for a cheap shot at the same time. Two orcs go for his head, two elves go for his stomach, and two dwarves strike out at his legs.

Sparrow winces at the yowls and screams of pain. But he's not all that good at calming an angry crowd...

Perhaps if he can make them run slower? He adds an illusion of a thick fog, visible to everyone except himself. Not a genuine thick fog, because that'll take a few minutes to appear; but an illusion, which snaps on instantly, in less than the time it takes to blink. At least that will make them slow down.

The second the bolt clips Anthony's ear, every thought process in his head switches to murdermurdermurdermurdermurder. He immediately whips a knife at his assailant's face.

There are times when being huge can be an advantage. Instead of trying to dodge the hits, Ruan bullrushes straight into his attackers, trying to both rob their blows of force and also trying to knock as many of them as he can off their feat.

Fogs, of course, are not known to come on all at once. Cries of "Sorcery!" can be heard from amid the violently milling crowd. A shower of sparks goes up from one black-robed orc, and one of the sparks zooms toward Sparrow like a heat-seeking missile. He finds his body glowing bright orange, like a lantern or a warning beacon. Two elves, a man's sword, a woman's leather satchel, and a draft horse all start glowing as well.

The old woman screams as the blade slashes her face and falls back into the gloom of her apartment, carrying her crossbow with her as she collapses. There's shouting from inside: "Under attack!" "Bloody looters!" and "Get down!" Someone, unseen in the indoor shadows, whips a chamber pot through the open window at Anthony's head.

Ruan hits the dwarves and the dwarves hit back, turning his body into a lever with themselves as the fulcrum. He goes down like an enormous tree being cut in the forest, crushing the elves beneath him and taking the orcs with him, too. The entire tangle of seven crashes to the floor with a mighty noise. One of the orcs tries to punch him in the face.

Those are by no means the only orange glows about. Sparrow adds in several more, just to aid the confusion. About a half dozen other fairies, dotted here and there over the crowd.

Oh, and one really big one in the shape of a dragon, hovering over everyone.

The black-robed orc, the two glowing elves, and the draft horse get sleep spells (about half an hour's worth) thrown at them, in that order, as quickly as Sparrow can manage after throwing up the decoys.

"F**************ck..." Anthony says after the chamber pot hits him and he promptly falls off the awning. When he comes to, he attempts to thin the stampeding herd by stabbing at various civilians, hopefully avoiding young women*. And thus modern crowd control is invented.

*Little known fact: Anthony has taken a solemn vow not to kill any woman between the ages of sixteen and fifty. A rather specific vow, but one he has yet to break.

Ruan, in the fine tradition of being punched in the face, proceeds to punch the orc in the face right back.

Every time Sparrow uses magic, the glow increases; everything his magic touches glows as well. By the time he's finished throwing his flurry of spells, he's glowing like a tiny sun, tendrils of orange light spinning out from him in various directions, and everyone in the crowd has stopped fighting to stare at him. And the dragon. But mostly at him.

Anthony wakes up on his back in the street, in serious danger of being crushed underfoot. His stabbing nets him a protective cover of wounded bodies, but he's still at a disadvantage.

The orc falls away with a yell, but the other five attackers, having regained their wits after the collision, pile on the druid, fists and feet flying.

Sparrow's thought processes go, more or less, "Oooh! Pretty colours!"

He throws more illusions around, changing one man's hair colour by the slightest degree, and making the sword of one elf gain a faint smell of cheese. These illusions he dispels as fast as he throws them - after all, he's casting them more for the pretty orange light than anything else.

Anthony tries to drag himself (while stabbing) to a safe place of some sort.

Ruan grunts as a few of the blows land, but continues to struggle, trying to get back to his feet. "If you gents don't be settlin' down, I might be gettin' angry." He grabs at a dwarf and tries to toss him, thoughtfully aiming away from the other patrons... straight at the wall.

The glowing spot that is Sparrow burns more and more brightly as the people watch, throwing out trails of effervescent orange light as he tosses out spell after spell.

The whispers of "Sorcery!" start back up. Suddenly, a flurry of projectiles -- chestnuts, coins, small cobblestones -- flies up from among the stunned watchers. Something hits Sparrow hard in the head, and everything goes dark.

Pulling himself along, Anthony escapes the crush of the street through a narrow doorway, into a darkened shop.

"That's the elf what killed the haberdasher!" someone shouts, leaping out to swing at Anthony's head. The blow connects, sending a shower of stars across his vision, and everything goes dark.

The dwarf hits the wall with a sickening crunch. The human patrons wince and concentrate harder on their drinks.

With labored steps, Ruan regains his feet, straightening slowly, throwing off an elf, an orc, the other elf, with his powerful strength. Then the remaining dwarf, with a suicidal bravery born of ale and mob hysteria, bounds up to a tabletop and launches himself directly at Ruan's head. Their two skulls collide with a crack, and everything goes dark.

An elf, a human, and a fairy wake up in a dim and shabby room filled with cots. Outside, sounds of shouting and fighting can be faintly heard.

The elf is tucked beneath the covers of one cot. The fairy is nestled on the pillow of another. The human is sprawled across two cots pushed together.

None of them can remember, at the moment, who they are or why they are here, though they each feel the others' faces look familiar.

All three have nauseatingly splitting headaches.

Sparrow reaches up and touches his head, which really hurts. He turn invisible, more out of force of habit than anything else, but doesn't actually get off the pillow

I didn't try and drink an entire quarter-pint of ale in one sitting, did I? I don't think I can handle alcohol very well.

Moving very slowly and deliberately, he sits up, leaning against the wall, to see what's going on.

Do I know these two?
