Welcome to the new thread. Until our next meeting, it's still winter, so if anyone has anything to do besides freeze, list it here.

Do any of the PCs have any thoughts on the paladin retiring?

Does the paladin WANT to retire? Has the need to halt evil in its tracks been overwhelmed by some primitive parental prioritization? (or is Weremensch just bored of playing James?) The cleric, for one, would find his life much more precariously held without the substantial combat and diplomatic skill which the paladin brings to the adventure party.
The elven mage, on the other hand, seems capable of getting himself into trouble (read: near-death experiences) whether the paladin is there or not !
So the question becomes: with what would the paladin be replaced? and would this affect the party's basic structure / ethos / survivability?
Inquiring gnomes want to know...

There's the rub. James is a somewhat forward type; he tends to be out front both in combat and society, and has already more or less inadvertently forced another character to retire because they weren't compatible with him. Should one character occupy that much real estate of the party?
As for the rest of it; the party would become less monopolar, would probably become more neutral (in both senses of the word), and would need another tank badly or it would have more problems in combat.

Well, the cleric feels that the Paladin should continue to adventure, taking the battle to evil, lest evil find its way home. The more mundane and daunting task of finding a suitable replacement tank is also a concern.
...and how would you represent yourself to your child..."Gee, Max, I used to be an up-and coming adventurer, but then I knocked up your mum and had to quit the business?" What is the greater good, the greater need, the greater service to your own family and that of paladins everywhere? (Most importantly, what am I getting paid for writing this flag-waving pile of goose droppings?)
Finally, there is this disturbing thought: What of your sword? Have you forgotten? You must return it to its rightful owner. This is no simple matter of wrapping it up and dropping it off with UPS (Unicorn, Pseudodragon and Sealion) delivery service ! The last I heard, you had been charged with something just short of a Geas to find a proper owner for the sword and deliver it forthwith.
What is the truth? And how will you defend it when its evil half-brother comes knockin'?

I'm in...
So, if not a Paladin, then what? Have you a back-up character or type in mind? Looking to play a cleric, druid, barbarian, or rogue? Feeling a need to experience the surge of raw (if sometimes misdirected) power of magic flow through your fingertips? Or just hankerin' to swing something besides an gawd-awful powerful sword with a life of its own?
I have no problem "resting" one of my characters if you wanted to create and play someone who's similar in calling... the cleric has plenty of work to do in the village. And who knows what has become of the elf over this past winter...boastful bragging and ready to continue, or bored to tears and going into the west, and diminishing?
