"Are there any rules about respecting the dead we need to observe for trolls? If not..."

Once everything is said and done and Felix has made sure Piper is alright (and gotten the anticipated scolding from Lady Sephrenia), he will take a few samples of Ghwerek's flesh and blood so their properties can be studied.

"Trolls are... not social creatures," says Sir Ulath. "I've never heard of them much caring about what happens to the dead."

Once the troll is beheaded, Sir Ulath relaxes slightly - Arkady can see the difference in the set of his shoulders - and moves to start gathering wood for a pyre. (Leaving a recognisable troll corpse about will terrify the nearby farmers, after all).

Sephrenia is fussing over Piper, making sure that her face is clean and she's well hugged. Piper herself seems to be terribly sleepy, largely flopping about in Sephrenia's arms; aside from sleepiness, there seems little wrong with her.

Felix doesn't get any scolding from Lady Sephrenia, though that might just be because Lady Sephrenia is too busy mothering Piper to bother.

Felix breaks out the science kit and makes do with the science. If venom from the Seeker was too exploitable, hopefully the regeneration of a troll is a more pursuable avenue. He snips samples from various locations (including a sample of brain or spinal tissue if possible) and places them in sterile test tubes. He then gets to work seeing if anything on the truck can be used to create a simple nutrient solution that will keep the samples alive.

He also makes a note to procure some candy later on. Maybe schedule a trip to the geneticists on the ship to see about a kitten or puppy. Probably no whale calf embryos on board, unfortunately.

Arkady shuts off the starlight scope and tries to use a lighter. If it works he heads off to rebuild the fires in the trucks, and if not he'll grab a lamp and an axe and help Sir Ulath gather wood.

If the lighter doesn't work, Felix has an idea. Ghwerek asked the troll god of fire to inhibit flame. They might still be doing so. He'll suggest using the rings and the rose to deactivate that effect as well.

If this is no longer the case he continues his science thing.

Felix: Science: +3 Sidekick: +4 Roll: +0 Total: +7

It turns out it's not hard to keep troll cells alive. It's not just easy, it's exceptionally easy. Even under the effects of his partial concussion, Felix is pretty sure he's got it right. Mainly, in all honesty, because he lets Theresa do most of the actual work involved.

No-one stops Theresa from taking these samples. Felix suspects they can preserve the samples more or less indefinitely in a basic nutrient solution, even at room temperature.

He doesn't have the equipment to do much with them until he gets back to the Ship, but he can preserve the samples.

Arkady's lighter works. The trucks are still having problems, but after some experimentation it turns out that taking the wood that's currently in them out and then building a new fire with new wood resolves the problem.

Someone is sure to test out the guns after that, firing a few bullets into the ground - and it turns out that the guns all work again.

"I guess now that we have the Blue Rose it's time we started moving on that cure," Felix says. "I'm unsure how... thorough the spell and the rose will be, so it can't hurt to have our best trained medical staff on hand. I'd like to head back to the ship and get that started."

Arkady shrugs. "When we get back from digging up Ghwerek's lair." If the knights aren't done, he'll help gather wood.

"Probably a good idea to send word that they should start getting ready, at any rate," Felix says. "We might also want to get a couple extra trucks and trailers, just in case."

The big advantage of your satellite and radio communications is that you can send word!

Most people over there are asleep, it still being around midnight, so I assume you're sending word by email.

"There is also the matter," points out Sephrenia, "of how to safely carry the Rose."

"I could just carry it with the Rings?" suggests Sir Sparhawk.

"And have the Troll-gods take advantage of every word you say to try to do us harm?" asks Sephrenia. "No - what is needed is a bag that isolates it from the surroundings. Made out of something that would be attracted to a magnet."

Arkady raises an eyebrow. "How 'isolated' does it need to be?"

"I'm guessing at least isolated enough that we don't inadvertently touch it with our hands," Felix says. He eyes Sir Sparhawk. "Is your helmet made of iron? You won't be wearing it until you can get that dent out. Put the Rose in and shut the visor down over it."

Arkady glances over at Felix: "Unless she's asking for a Faraday cage made of iron."

"The helmet won't do - it needs to have iron, or some other metal, on all sides of the Rose. Small holes won't make any difference, but the neck of the helmet isn't a small hole."

It certainly sounds like she's after a Faraday cage, though she doesn't have the words.

Felix grabs a hacksaw and an electric spot welder out of his collection of tools, then pops the hood on the truck.

"Just need a bit of iron big enough to cover that hole, right? I can fix that up real quick."

Felix finds a good spot on the hood to start sawing.

"That helmet isn't a family heirloom, I hope?"
