When the group gets on the road, Felix would like Roger's help editing the languages of the games in the generic game systems he procured a while back, as well as a couple movies that can be put up on projector to watch on quiet nights with downtime.

But for now he just naps in the truck.

It doesn't look like anything's going to go horribly wrong with the greenhouses anytime soon. How much this may or may not have to do with the fact that Piper has been happily helping out at the greenhouses in small ways over the last while is unclear.

After a thorough search, Roger concludes that the only tablets outside the Earthling's little compound are: Blackwell's tablet, and the tablet they had given Zalasbra (which is a few kilometres away despite Zalasbra himself being in the compound). At the time of the search, the group had not yet left the compound themselves.

Mind you, there are any amount of tablets not on the Ship; the guys doing farming or building or other tasks outside of the Ship generally have tablets with them while doing so.

oog: Something tells me that Hex editing is not something one should attempt whilst on the road, but if anyone can do it Roger can.

also, I think you're better able to construct a rudimentary video cam with your engineering chops which is the only way we're going to be able to get a projector to work XD. Also we're going to need a big magnifying glass I think.[/oog]

Roger will be utterly consumed by the hex editing project until we leave. And then when we leave, he'll still be working on it to pass the time in the car such as he's able to manage.

Arkady passes along the searches made by the mad bomber to the captain, notes that he's off to join up with some pretty powerful mages, and suggests that the guns be moved without it being mentioned in the computer anywhere that the mad bomber's tablet might find it. Yes, the inventory system available outside the ship has to be falsified for that to work. He's sure David will love it, which is why he's suggesting it to the captain. That done, he's pretty much ready to go.

Captain Argent says that he will "have someone look into" the issue of the guns. From context, Arkady assumes that 'someone' will be David.

Correctly, as it happens. Well before reaching - or even getting close to - Lake Venne, Arkady finds he has an email from David, giving the results of his looking into the matter. And the result is this; that someone has, at some point, opened those lockers and removed a small number of guns and a large number of bullets.

The computer certainly did not give Blackwell the combinations for the locks on those lockers, and the lockers themselves were undamaged. Moreover, the lock system records and notes the timing of any unsuccessful attempts at opening the locks (as well as automatically emailing several people, including the Captain - note that the automatic email does not happen if someone enters the correct combination). Records show that there were no incorrect combinations entered.

David's theory is that Blackwell had, through illicit means, obtained the combinations of those locks before entering cryosleep - those combinations were supposed to be guarded and secret, but on the other hand Blackwell had got an entire false identity fabricated, so presumably he knew someone back on Earth who could ferret out that information?

Arkady shares the information in that email with the others, and looks into the ships supply of ballistic armor. And in case it's not clear, he tells Piper: "That fellow who tried to burn Zalasbra seems to have stolen some of the Terran weapons, and Zalasbra is chasing him. Hopefully he'll be careful."

It comes as no surprise to Felix that Blackwell might have had inside information if he was able to sneak aboard in the first place. As they travel Felix reviews bomb disposal documentation, both conventional and exotic, to make sure he remains on top of things in that regard.

He'll also pass two of the generic portable gaming systems to Talen and Piper to see how they like them. Tetris is the first game loaded since there isn't much to translate. He'll also ask the group if they want to watch another movie at some point when they've made camp. He's been working on translating a largely fictional movie about giant golems fighting giant monsters and a loosely true movie about two soldiers trying to deliver a message to stop an attack that's being lead into a trap.

Beyond that he sets himself in for the journey.

Piper asks a few questions about what sort of weapons and seems perfectly satisfied with the answer of 'guns'. She then reports that she can't warn Zalasbra because he'd left the Terran compound some time earlier.

Felix's gift of the two tetris games gets mixed reactions. Talen asks what use it is, and loses interest when he can't turn it into money or food in some way (though before he loses interest, he does turn out to be surprisingly good at it). Piper makes no comment, but seems to get quite engrossed in the game; close observation, however, will show that she only seems to get engrossed in the game while sitting on someone's lap. She's even better at it than Talen, and all of the Terrans quickly learn that "just one more game" lasts exactly as long as she wants it to last, no more and no less; and she generally wants it to last several hours.

Talen finds the movies much more intriguing, and he has all sorts of questions about the things he sees in them; Piper has fewer questions, but wants to be hugged during the scary parts.

Felix will explain to the best of his ability, though it might be hard to get across what exactly CGI is and what it does.

A thought occurs to Arkady, and he checks in with the ship to see if Blackwell and Zalasbra left the ship to go study on horseback or on foot.

Sam is perfectly willing to be Piper's car seat, and tries to make sure that when something scary is about to happen just so happens to be at the same time she challenges Piper to duo tetris.

Interestingly, CGI is one of the few things that they don't query - Piper dismisses it as "really shoddy illusions" and Talen seems to accept that. But the soldier film includes a biplane, and that raises all sorts of questions from Talen.

Arkady gets the news that Zalasbra and Blackwell were seen leaving the Compound on foot. It's anyone's guess where Blackwell got a horse from.

Sam finds that it is incredibly easy to distract Piper from Duo Tetris with a scary film scene... or, for that matter, with an unexpected hug. Surprisingly, she doesn't actually win in Duo all that often... unless someone offers her a hug for winning, under which conditions she's entirely undefeated.

--------------

It's the third day out...

Nathan: Alertness: +4 Roll: -2 Total: +2
Felix: Alertness: +2 Roll: +2 Companion: +4 Total: +8
Arkady: Alertness: +1 Roll: +2 Total: +3
Roger: Alertness: +3 Roll: +0 Total: +3
Samantha: Alertness: +2 Roll: +1 Total: +3

It's Felix who spots it first. There are plenty of sounds of creatures - frogs croaking, bees buzzing, that sort of thing.

But there is a distinct lack of people. The fields around them are not being worked.

Felix taps the hood of the truck and leans over to the window where Theresa is driving.

"I believe we've found trouble, keep your eyes peeled. I think the Seeker might be afoot."

He passes the message along to everyone else via radio, then racks the bolt on the truck mounted turret.

When Arkady finds out that they left on foot, he sends back a message to consider searching for a cache of weapons. Guns and a lot of ammo are very heavy; and if their favorite bomber left on foot, then he had to leave at least a great deal of it behind.

When he hears about the seeker, Arkady sighs and is quietly thankful that Irina is not around. That sort of thing has a depressing tendency to lead to a lot of dead bodies. Though to be fair, a lot of other nasty things could scare off the peasants, including their favorite mercenary and some of his minions. Well, he has the sergeant and his bible handy; and prays that they won't be needed.

The Seeker may or may not be afoot at the moment.

Wherever it is, though, it's not here.

There's a continual distinct lack of people. There's a small farmhouse up ahead, there may be some hints there - and if you follow the road you're on (without stopping at the farmhouse) then you estimate that you should reach a small village on the shore of Lake Venne at around sundown.

--------------

David indicates that Arkady has made an excellent point, and he will organise a number of search parties at once.
