Purple State Republican senators might be in an interesting position from a Macciaveliian point of view. If they go against Trump, they loose their primaries, if they go for Trump their chances for the general elections go down. So their optimal strategy would be to start with kinda noncomitally supporting Trump until the primaries are done and then turn on him, provided the impeachment process lasts long enough.

How many of thoose would be there.

Also can an impeached president be elected again? Like if the impeachment process finishes between the primaries and the general election?

Impeached, yes; but if memory serves conviction would be a permanent bar.

Actually it isn't automatic, the Senate has to vote separately to bar the impeached official from federal office. There was a judge where they didn't do this so after he was removed, he successfully ran for Congress.

True. They could, in theory, convict him and then allow him to ruin any chance the GOP has of holding the Senate by continuing to run for president. So as a practical matter he's gone, but in theory he could try the comeback kid thing.

Huh. We've already gone from "So what if he did it, it was fine!" to half the White House blaming each other for it.

So apparently there's a whole server full of inappropriately classified transcripts of the crazy **** Trump's said to foreign leaders. Can Congress subpoena them?

Yes. They've formally opened an impeachment inquiry, it's pretty much open season on all of Trump's records that might be pertinent (not to be confused with the fishing trip the Republicans tried to pull on Clinton). Will they get them? That's a more interesting question.

A bit dated: but now that Trump turned over proof of a felony, and then went on to commit another one on live TV; we're actually seeing the slightest hint that Senators who stand in significant danger of losing their jobs if they stick with him could consider hinting that certain very carefully selected bits of what he's doing aren't completely appropriate.

Or in other words: they're all still willing accomplices to his felonies, but some of them are starting to get antsy about it.

Eh, we've sort of seen this movie before. A few Republicans will give Trump a stern talking to so that they can placate their more squeamish voters and go back to ignoring his misdeeds.

Tucker Carlson is trying to thread this needle for them. Since "what Trump did was perfectly fine" is getting stretched pretty thin, the next line to take is "what Trump did was bad but let's not impeach him or anything".

I'm actually a trifle surprised; I figured he'd stick with putting the G-7 in that hotel of his in order to make the Republicans in Congress crawl. I guess a couple too many looked like they might remember that his base is not an electing majority where they come from. Oh, well; it's not like they'd be the only ones he's capitulated to in the last week or so. Looks like Krugman is right; Trump's much too weak and dishonest to make it as a mob boss.

So, one Congressional Republican called for Trump to be impeached, then a week later announced his resignation. Profiles in courage indeed. Meanwhile I have lost track of how many times Giulani has incriminated himself on television.

A funny thing - the case law on criminal bribery has set the bar so high that it's basically a non-prosecutable offense because someone would have to be moustache-twirlingly obvious in setting up a quid-pro-quo. You can lavish elected officials with expensive gifts as long as you don't explicitly state upfront what you expect in return. Thanks, Supreme Court.

So the Republicans are clinging furiously to "no quid-pro-quo" because even though Trump openly demanded political favours from Ukraine in exchange for military aid, they'll reduce the whole thing to mind-numbing exercise in modern dance interpretation in order to argue that whatever Trump did, didn't count.

Perhaps his plan is to send the counters so high they flip back around to zero.

Today Trumps lawyer literally said that in court in Manhattan: that if Trump shot someone on Fifth Avenue, not only could be not be charged for it but the NYPD could not investigate it. The judges seemed unimpressed.

The lesson Trump's lackeys drew from Watergate is that Nixon should have covered it up harder. A few of them appear to have believed this long before Trump came along. Now they get to put it into action. Oh glee!

Also the Wall Street Journal has fallen back on the "he"s too incompetent to crime" defence.

So Trump is the second least popular president since polling began (poor Jimmy Carter), but still stands a decent chance of winning the electoral college. If the Senate acquits him in impeachment (likely) and he wins a second term after losing the popular vote again (possible), I don't want to think about what the world looks like in another four years' time.

Never mind the Russians, quite a few senior Chinese officials are hoping Trump gets reelected in spite of his trade war because he's a strategic dummy. They're running rings round him in the Asia Pacific.
