Nate stops using the printing press' ink ink applicator pads as maracas and follows the servant to see who could be looking for him.

"If we can cut off Raven's source of money," muses Spahawk, speaking quietly, "and find some of the Patriarchs in hiding, convince them that they can vote safely..."

--------------

Nate finds two people and a covered truck; the people being Sir Bevier (who was last seen at the Ship, listening to the bugs in the Elene palace) and one of the Terrans; a fellow Nate doesn't personally know, but who introduces himself as Samuel (and expresses gratitude that someone speaks English). Samuel tells Nate what's up, entirely in English in case of eavesdroppers.

In summary, it seems that the Terrans ran into a collapsed section of the mine, where some person had apparently been piling up a stash of gold. They're pretty sure they found his remains as well, buried under the collapse. Not wanting the trouble of dealing with this large stash of gold, Captain Argent and his assistant had agreed that the thing to do was to send it to Chyrellos as a sort of advance payment of several years worth of tithe.

As far as amount goes, the total amount of gold in the truck apparently adds up to what David, having asked Sir Bevier some very pointed economics questions via the translation program, suspects is about three to five times the size of the entire Elene treasury.

Finally, there are even more Seeker-bitten peasants along the road between Cimmura and Chyrellos than there were previously; Sam and Sir Bevier only managed to escape the horde due to the speed of the truck. Sir Bevier is pretty sure that there's no way anyone else will be able to travel that road; especially since the Seeker has apparently been taking down (and biting) the soldiers sent to clear the road as well.

After several moments of processing, Nate sends off a group text to the others explaining the situation.

[We are now richer than the Count of Monte Cristo. So do we turn the loot in, or make a break for what passes for Fiji on this planet and decide on some new names along the way?]

[Also, anyone who doesn't have access to Terran tech is going to need an army to get in or out of this town. Apparently the Seeker has been busy turning anyone it can find.]

After thinking for a moment, Arkady sends a note down to Vanire.

Your Grace: a messenger from our colony just arrived in the city. He says that the road back to the capitol is closed; the seeker is biting peasants and the soldiers sent to get rid of them. The only way he made it was because trucks are faster than the poor bastards in the way. I am not thinking anyone carrying money from the Elene treasury will be getting through for a while. That may be important to the 11 men you're talking to.

Vanire does not send a note back. However, he does look up in Arkady's direction and nod, before continuing to talk to the other Patriarchs.

...it might be a while before you find out what reaction, if any, these little talks will have.

A thought occurs to Arkady, and he sends a group text:
Arkady wrote:
There are 129 patriarchs here. 3 are coming from out of town, 6 are in hiding, which makes 138. There are supposed to be 168 of them in total. Where are the other 30? Try to see if any of the locals know.

Nate relays the text to Talon.

"Think you could make some inquiries?"

Last you saw him, Talon was headed to bed to get some sleep after staying up practically all night helping to distribute those fliers. Would you like to wake him up, wait for him to wake up on his own, or ask someone else for now?

Nate will make inquiries with the general staff, but will otherwise wait for Talon to finish his nap.

Nate makes a few enquiries.

Nate: Contacting: +0 Unfamiliar territory: -2 Roll: +2 Total: +0

It seems that the current situation is that a far higher number of Patriarchs are present in Chyrellos than usual; Patriarchs administer various aspects of the Church in various territories all across the Elene Kingdoms, and the requirements of their office often involve visiting various far-flung locations.

On top of that, there is sometimes somewhat of a delay between the death of one Patriarch and the appointment of his successor.

Unfortunately, it seems that Dolmant's general staff have no idea which Patriarchs are currently out of the city, never mind where they are.

--------------

Several hours pass, and lunchtime approaches. It quickly becomes obvious that the meeting in the Basilica will not break for lunch.

Makova successfully manages to call a vote for the lighting of one more candle in the Basilica during meetings, and immediately launches into a long speech about proper ecclesiastical garments.

Lady Sephrenia asks a few questions of Sir Sparhawk, and it turns out that anyone currently in the Basilica is perfectly welcome to leave and return at any time, so long as the Patriarch sponsoring your presence (Dolmant, for the Terran delegation) is in the Basilica at the time and doesn't withdraw his permission (at worst, there will be a slight delay while a message is sent to Dolmant confirming this).

Arkady strolls over to where the others are sitting. Nothing exciting was happening where he was, anyway. "It isn't looking like we will be served lunch. I am guessing we can eat at Dolmant's place, but can we get there and back without a patriarch to make the soldiers go away?

"We can always take a letter," suggests Sir Ulath. "Signed and dated by a Patriarch. That... should work."

Arkady shrugs. "I guess it's worth a try." He writes a letter and sends it down to Dolmant, asking for a letter saying that the bearers are on his business so we can show it to the soldiers. And if he thinks it will help, add any other patriarchical signatures from folks who would be willing to play along.

Dolmant sends two letters back. The first, as requested, is a signed and dated statement that you are on Patriarchal business.

The second asks you to please not use the first to do anything that will cause him to regret giving you the first letter.
