I smell a distraction. Or a test. Not sure which.

Arkady would burn a fate point to make sure that such studies were done and included in the ships records in some useful way.

I'll hold off on actually spending that Fate point until such time as you get hold of the Ship again (whether by radio or in person).

So medicine would be a survival roll, right?

For Nate it would, because I have a stunt that allows it to be substituted for the usual science roll.

Normally medicine is a Science roll. Arkady's not bad at it.

Gah! How did I miss that?
Okay, edited. You don't get a plus for Dr. Vanderbilt's instructions unless your Science skill is worse than her medical skill (which is +3), but you easily make the target roll on your own now.

How have the blood bees been coming along? Does the honey still make people sick or have we found a way around that?

Most people are leery of the honey because it looks, smells, and tastes like it's full of blood (which it is); and because Blood Bees are not fussy about taking down human targets and using their blood.
This particular lot hasn't been caught going after any humans yet, and there's no sign of any disease in their honey at all so far; the revulsion that a lot of the colonists feel for it is purely psychological (though David thinks that one could probably make a very sweet black pudding or similar from the honey).

Just ballpark, a month by horse around here would be 1,000 kilometers?

Depending on the quality of the horses, how heavily laden they are, how good a horseman Patriarch Ortzel is, etc., the absolute maximum would probably be about 2000km (if he didn't take luggage, switched horses often and was an excellent horseman with money to burn on good mounts).
Since those assumptions are probably mostly wrong (it's likely he wasn't in a great hurry, he probably took a fair amount of baggage, and is unlikely to have bought new horses on a regular basis during his journey, and his horsemanship is unknown) 1000km is probably a far more reasonable estimate. However, it's got a fair degree of wriggle room in both directions.

In the real world, road blocks consisting of a handful of peasants would have been quickly cleared out by soldiers sent by the local lords. They've got a financial interest in the roads being open, even leaving aside their problems with rebellion (which this technically would be if the peasants weren't slaves).
Ok, the seeker could always grab someone else assuming it's still haunting that road; but the new blocks would be even more quickly cleared, and it would find itself the target of a manhunt by the soldiers and various knightly orders once they understood the problem. Well, monsterhunt.
