OK, question of the day. Suppose Trump were to be impeached --presumably if and only if the Dems take Congress in the midterms --what would happen then? He seems unlikely to go quietly, like Nixon.

Is he successfully removed from office? Does the GOP finally break ranks? Do his core supporters accept it? Does Alabama secede? What happens?

If a Democratic House brings articles of impeachment, we get another circus. But you need 2/3 of the Senate to convict. I very much doubt that the Democrats will retake the Senate, and it would be mathematically impossible for them to achieve a 2/3 majority this fall. If Pelosi and Schumer don't see a way to peel off a large number of Republicans, they will probably chicken out and not impeach. They would rather suck it up and focus on the 2020 election than go through the embarrassment of an impeachment process that's guaranteed to fail.

So the question becomes "are there enough Republicans left in the Senate who are moved by anything other than naked partisanship?" Because if not, it won't matter what evidence Mueller puts in front of them.

If there is a big enough democratic wave, i suppose some republicans will adjust their loyality to Trump.

And while it would be out of character for the democratic leadership, going for an impeachment, that is bound to fail can be a viable political strategy. After all you have a great forum to present the wrongs of the administration. I suppose it would be best* though, to time it that way, that the impeachment is in preparation during the 2020 primaries and ongoing during the 2020 election.

A good counterstrategy for the republicans, especially if they conclude that Trump is no longer a vote winner, would be to suddenly discover, that Trump is no longer fit for office and remove him in a face-saving way. If the democrats are obvious enough at preparing such a strategy, they might even indirectly remove Trump a bit earlier.

*from a machiavellian perspective

I think the Senate Republicans feel trapped. If they anger the base by moving against Trump, Trump will try to have them ousted by even further right-wing primary challengers. But if they openly support Trump, they risk alienating the general electorate. So they've been saying "bad dog" when Trump does something insane but otherwise make no moves against him.

I don't know whether anything Mueller could write in his report could be damning enough to shake them from this self-protective cringe. They might just wag their fingers and say "Trump did a bad thing and we're disappointed in him" but then do absolutely nothing about it. In the interest of "stability". Meanwhile, the crazier Republicans in Congress will seize on the one wrong thing that a Democrat might have done in Mueller's report and screech about that. See, see, there's no reason to impeach Trump because the Democrats are even worse!

I've lost hope in them rediscovering spines or principles, but given that he's losing them both money and votes, maybe that will finally wake them up. There's got to be a point where even the naked self-interest evens out, right? Especially now the primaries are over, and the Senators need to appeal to the general population.

Well that's why they have been retiring in droves. It's mostly the moderate ones who are leaving, ceding ground to nuttier candidates. The Trumpists need to go down, hard.

Excuse the double post, but we now have a specific provable felony for which Trump could theoretically be impeached. Not Russia, but his stupid porn star payoffs. Michael Cohen has now told a court that he made the illegal payoffs because Trump told him to. And he has tapes.

Theoretically impeached. I'm not gonna hold my breath.
