When I followed the broken link, I couldn't help but notice that this is hosted off site. Who's problem is this? Might want to check on this....

edit: I never hotlinked it myself. Pretty sure I just uploaded it here one day and never looked behind the scenes.

Looking into it. :kzk:

Looking in the avatar options, there's Gravatar, Remote Avatar, and Upload Avatar. Your avatar appears to be configured as a Remote Avatar to a dead image link. At least, the image doesn't load when viewed directly, either. I just did a quick test of a Remote Avatar and it seems to function as expected with a live image.

You can review and update your avatar from the User Control Panel -> Profile -> Edit avatar.

I just noticed that both the bottom of the strip for February 10, 2009 and the top of the strip for February 11, 2009 have been cut off, but each one appears to contain a small slice of the other (as if the two were originally shown as a single page). Note sure why this might have happened, but I thought Pete would probably want to know about it. :)

Thanks so much you guys! You spotted things in the archive that I would have missed. I set up a new thread for reporting any comics that still have conversion errors from the old system:
http://forums.sluggy.com/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=96181

JUST in case you spot anything else!

But you won’t for I am totally competent! ;)

Link 'pointing' is significantly off again.

Since I transcribe Pete's notes in addition to the comic, I clicked on garyfritz's link in the "Report a Conversion-Error Comic Here!" thread, so that I could transcribe Pete's fix. The link was supposed to land me at the comic for 9-25-17, but instead landed me at the comic for 8-18-17. Once I established which comic it was, getting to the link on the transcription page landed me in the same spot (8-18-17); although getting to the right comic on the transcription page has always been problematic (and an issue for a later time).

In case it matters, I'm using Firefox 60.0.01 on Mac OS 10.11.6

I've noticed this, too.

I could be wrong, but I suspect the problem is related to the way that each strip is loaded on demand without having its height specified in advance. I'm sure the browser is doing its best to figure out just how tall each <div> and <img> tag is, but it might not have a chance to finish those calculations on long archive pages before it has to set the scroll position. If that's the case, one possible workaround might be to explicitly include the height of each strip in the generated HTML.

Just my 2¢…

Looking into it, swmartian. That "storing the height" suggestion from kansaichris might just be the answer, too.

kansaichris: What browser and OS are you seeing the issue on? Are you getting the same behavior as swmartian on that particular link (for 09-25-17) always landing on 08-18-17, or does it land on a different strip consistently?

swmartian: Could you confirm if you get the same behavior on the site directly, without the transcription iframe? And within the transcription page, if you're normally using an admin/logged-in specific version of the transcriber, do you get the same behavior on the generic logged-out version on the transcriber?

Yes, it occurs on the site directly. I haven't mentioned the issue on the transcription site lately, because I know transfer of that is on the "to do eventually list", and I figure any issues can be cleaned up at that point. It was just interesting to see the same exact offset on the transcription site as I noticed on the main site - which is why I mentioned it.

?? Right now, if I'm not logged in as administrator, the only option that I have is to search for that same comic and then either "View" the comic (in which case, of course the offset is the same) or to "Flag" it (which at this point has no meaning).

But oh! It does land on the most recent comic (which is the only one not transcribed right now) if I simply click on "Transcribe Sluggy", whereas if I'm logged in and search for the last transcribed comic and click on "archive", then click on the 'next arrow', the comic usually lands a few weeks back and I have to scroll to the end to get there.

Okay, we haven't yet been able to reproduce the error on our end, even using Firefox on MacOS, but that doesn't mean we're not still trying to fix this. :kiki: Give us a few days and we may have a test chapter for you to try, and you can see if you get the same problem.

Anyone experiencing the link landing errors, could you test this possible fix? (Warning, this is a major plot reveal from last September, for anyone not caught up. I wanted to use the same link swmartian had reported reproducing the error on previously.)

Test Link with a possible fix to the problem.

Normal Link to the same strip, showing how the archives behave currently.

Interestingly, they both work for me now. Oy.

Ah, sorry—I should have been a bit more specific than "I've noticed this, too." ;)

I didn't have a problem with the particular link mentioned by swmartian, but I have experienced similar behavior with other links in the past. I just started looking for one to reproduce the issue, and found this link to the strip for October 19, 2012. When I try clicking it, I am either taken to the strip for October 7th, October 19th, or October 23rd. When I try pasting the URL directly into the address bar, I am either taken to the strip for October 23rd or October 24th.

I'm using Safari 11.1.1 on macOS 10.13.5.

Thank you for the details, and for digging for a reproduction case. Does this test link to that strip fix the issue for you?

OK, so the first time I clicked on the link, it sent me to the comic after that (10-22-12). Then I realized that I hadn't checked the date first and used the back-arrow to return to this thread, check the date, and then click on the link again. THEN I landed on the right strip. Weird.

More weirdness. So I came back to the comic, and decided to click on Pete's "Random Ref" for today (06-19-18), which was supposed to lead to chapter=71#2018-04-16. This time I noticed that the url CHANGED while it was loading! The first time it changed to chapter=71#2018-04-13 (but landed on chapter=71#2018-04-04). I clicked on it again, and it changed to chapter=71#2018-04-13 again, but this time landed on chapter=71#2018-04-13). I clicked on it a third time and finally got chapter=71#2018-04-16.

Then I clicked on "another random link", and this time landed on the correct comic w/o a url change. Same with "Musky-5" link. Maybe the archives just need to "warm up"... ;-)
