The sad part is that deliberately facilitating the next upcoming Islamist terror attack, which turned out to be 9/11, worked out really well for the Republicans...

Yes, Trump may just be looking to cover his accomplices in the House by going to war; it would fit with getting rid of the 'adults' and bringing in chicken-hawk yes-men like Bolton. I'm not sure if getting so much of corporate America pissed at him by starting a trade war with China first will help keep the corporate media slavishly on his side the way it supported Dubya, though.

There doesn't seem to be that much daylight between McMaster's positions and Bolton's. McMaster was a proponent of military action against Iran and North Korea. Bolton is pretty much the same, only more of a unilateralist, not as well read and much more of a jerk. Things got worse, but not as much worse than they already were as we might think. Ugh.

Best case scenario, the officious little twerp gets on Trump's nerves and is fired within a month.

Collusion, in it of itself, is not a crime. I know, it's pedantic, but it also helps to understand the weight that Mueller might be placing on the different reports and investigations. The cover up, in this case, is the crime.

Trump may be charged with Obstruction of Justice - but the important thing to remember is: It's really hard to level criminal charges against a sitting president. Impeachment seems likely at this point. The more important thing is, will the report be bad enough that republican law makers remove him from office?

I know there isn't an actual crime called collusion, Trump & co. may have broken various laws in the process of buddying up to Putin. Violation of campaign finance laws, money laundering, conspiracy to hack computers, etc.

Anyhoo, Trump's really freaking out because of the Michael Cohen raid. Since the guy is reportedly eyeball deep in Ukrainian mob boss connections, I have to wonder if there's more to the FBI's interest in him than his role in bribing/threatening Stormy Daniels. What are the chances that Trump's longtime henchman (and he is much more of a henchman than a lawyer) will flip on him?

Based on observations of Zuma, I expect that most of Trump's henchmen will flip on him somewhere between ten seconds and two days after he stops being President. Before that, they won't do anything that can be traced back to them (but anonymous leaks via the press are very possible).

Trump’s Lawyer May Have Stored ‘Gold Mine’ Of Recorded Conversations: Report
Quote:
The Post said it was unclear if Cohen had taped any conversations with Trump. But a source said it was Cohen’s “standard practice” to play recordings for the president that he’d made of other top advisers. New York is a one-party consent state, meaning Cohen could legally record any phone conversation without the other person’s knowledge.

Experts described the recordings as a potential “gold mine” in interviews with the Post, saying that if they exist and are admissible in court, they could prove extremely valuable to prosecutors.

I think "gold mine" may be an understatement.

If you're colluding to sneak a birthday cake into the office, sure. That said, if what you're colluding in is a crime then the collusion itself is a crime; though it would be labeled 'conspiracy' or 'accessory' when you get charged.

As for the Cohen raid, well, Trump has been fairly openly flouting the law for decades and this clown is his consigliere. I imagine the Taint Team (I love that name) must be having a fine old time right now.

Did these people learn nothing from Richard Nixon? If you're going to do crimes, don't make recordings! Dip$%*#s.

I see Comey has just gone nuclear on Donald Trump. Dude is pissed. But apart from what he already told Congress last year, it doesn't sound as if he has a lot more incriminating evidence on Trump.

Meanwhile, Trump's approval rating is holding steady as Fox News paves the way for the firing of Rosenstein and/or Mueller. Corrupt FBI witch hunt indeed.

As with Nixon, I think it's gonna come down to the tapes. But it's possible that the Fox News crowd has gone beyond the reach of tapes. Trump's already been caught on tape confessing to crimes (KITTY! grabbing) and none of them gave a crap.

The Fox crowd doesn't exactly see standing up for patriarchical privilege as wrong (and has a very...liberal...view of that privilege). Recall that Citizen Bannon made just that equation about the blowback and they ate it up.

These days they don't exactly hold the rule of law (as something independent of Trump's ego) in high regard either. Three out of four Republicans have been convinced by Hannity's rants that the entire FBI, half the Justice Department and no small number of lifelong Republican civil servants are liberal loony deep state plants.

Ironically, Trump's failure to dismantle Obamacare care has probably bolstered his approval ratings because it has allowed him to declare victory while not throwing his base off their insurance en masse. It's still chugging along, a bit worse for wear, but holding up. Trump's going to continue to be his usual amount of unpopular for the foreseeable future, and the Dems may fall just a teensy bit short of retaking the House. I seriously think they're going to miss it by 2 seats.

Although the Syria bombing appears to have gotten the far right isolationist crowd very exercised. Alex Jones completely lost his (marbles) and said he was done with Trump. We'll see if that lasts more than 10 minutes.

Things keep getting better. Hannity was just outed as one of Cohen's clients. I'm crossing my fingers so hard for there to be something incriminating in the tapes. Bonus points if they show direct coordination between Trump and Fox. Lumpy truly is a malignant tumor on the political discourse in this country.

Also, I know it is probably a stupid thing to proclaim "Can you believe Trump was dumb enough to say ___?", but can you believe Trump was dumb enough to use the phrase "mission accomplished" after the bombing?

That is just too good to be true. Hilarious.

Considering the bombing sought to accomplish only slightly more than nothing, and achieved just that, this is probably one of the very few instances in which saying "mission accomplished" was accurate. Sigh.

In the 'can't help but wonder' files, two thoughts on the whole doctor's notes mess. One, will either of the two doctors who falsely certified Trump to be healthy have to answer for that? Second, what is he hiding? Petty stuff like the false hair and being fat? Does the fact that a man who was pretty clever a decade ago now has an obvious two digit IQ point to some serious underlying damage? Or is it something else?

And in passing, is there a professional Republican out there who isn't praying Trump will be crippled or killed by his own failing body so they can dispose of him without having to own it? I'm not sure which side of the line the smart money should go.

Ha. On Fox, Giuliani both confirmed Trump was involved in the Stormy Daniels payout while trying to explain how he didn't violate campaign finance law and Comey was indeed fired because of the Russia investigation.

When was Donald Trump ever "pretty clever"? One of his own college professors reportedly described him as "the dumbest god(bleep) student I ever had". He got into Wharton as a legacy admission. This is the guy who bankrupted several casinos and pretended to be his own publicist apparently without disguising his voice. However much he's slowed down in old age, it was a descent from a pretty low base.
