I think men are also unlikely to report crimes where their victimization would diminish people's perception of their manhood. Men who are in a domestic abuse situation are often slow to recognize that they are in fact being abused, and are reluctant to report their partners because it's considered shameful to be "beat up by a girl".

Aside from what happens, if people become victims of crimes, there is also the questions, what happens when they don't.

If you have the view, that if a relationship is not abusive, it is because the man is chivalrous and the woman is lucky, this is an expression of different capabilities of men and women.

And if you live in the believe, that you could get away with becoming abusive, but are a too good person to do it, or that you are lucky, that your partner has not (yet?) become abusive, this has an effect on your self esteem.

Similiar what crimes you can expect can happen to you and if you consider them an apriori catastrophe or a test of your toughness, does have an effect on your quality of life.

And while the macho man model might be a poor way to prepare you for actual crimes happening to you, both for precaution and dealing with the consequences, it is great for life quality as long as nothing happens.

And while that is nothing absolute and ethernal, based on people i know and with crime rates like they are around here, if you should market a message with regards to women and crime, it is my opinion, that for the time being it should be to promote macho man attitude among women.
